The likelihood of actually getting over 50s to basically shield is small I'd have thought seeing as that's the age range of most of the people with money and clout.

Dowser · 02/08/2020 13:26

@Allflightscancelled
Most of the mps will be over 50
I never locked down and don’t intend to either

What was the horribleness @iamapixie? I really liked her posts and wondered where she had gone.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 02/08/2020 13:46

I know I'm not a scientist or nuffin, but...

Isn't cases going up but deaths and hospitalisations staying down a good thing? It means that the virus can spread about, people are getting sick enough to get a test but not end up needing to be treated in hospital (so experiencing it as a cold / flu level illness). Those people then have immunity so the level of immunity in the population goes up. Eventually the virus dies out as herd immunity is established?

Does that make sense to anyone else?

WalesAppearsToBeSlightlySaner · 02/08/2020 13:47

@justasking111 - the snooze button on FB is fantastic.

I think this pitting us against each other is a current theme of this government and we need to do everything we can to resist it. I'd like to focus on what we need to have as a society - money, food, drink, education, health services etc. We need to have grown up conversation about how do we balance these to get the best possible outcome that includes controlling the spread of disease, particularly to those we know are at high risk of death or long term harm, but this can't be the only measure.

We may not all agree on the compromises, but if we come together around roughly where we want to end up we'll get much further than when we call people names. I hate the Covidiots/cowards narrative that has been set up by the media/government (looking at you FB and Twitter). Most people will fall somewhere on a spectrum between complete lockdown and no lockdown at all.

Supermarketworker06 · 02/08/2020 13:47

@Allflightscancelled

I think a lot of this is scaremongering by the government, like they have often done at key points like sunny Bank Holidays. All designed to scare us into doing as we're told and being good compliant little citizens.

Well the latest idea, locking down over 50s. Don't make me laugh. I'm 58 and I'm NOT being made to lockdown again. They can fuck off.

I'm 59, can't work from home. Dh is in his 50's, travels miles with his job as he has to "go" to different places to do his job, he can't work from his factory, never mind from home. The plan is that I'm looking after my daughter's baby and sometimes doing the school run with her oldest, if I don't do that she can't work and she's a teacher. Her mil is doing the same and she's a bit older than me, so that won't work. Buggered if I'm staying home. I've only just started having my grandson round, no way is that stopping.
Ibake · 02/08/2020 13:53

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito That's what I say to anyone who's getting a bit anxious about cases going up. I've turned into such a data bore! Cases going up are mostly pillar 2 ie in the community and lots are as a result of targeted testing.

My son is now working for the testing sites and every day he's somewhere different - this week it's been all the NW hotspots.

The other thing I always know is the data on admissions, total number of patients and vent bed occupancy for UK and NW. I find that when I share this info with people they're a little less freaked out.

Quite why some middle aged housewife in Cheshire is doing the Government's work for them though is beyond me!

justasking111 · 02/08/2020 13:55

OH frothing here Hamilton taking the knee, while free of taxes in Monaco working for people who built equipment for the jewish gas chambers. Oh he is hopping.

CruCru · 02/08/2020 13:58

Problem is, depending on the industry, quite a few over 50s are already in a difficult position. They worry about being pushed out and are much too young to retire. Telling your employer that you need to stay at home because you’re over 50 will make that worse.

This is what I was trying to say. Does it matter if cases are rising if deaths are going down. Is it still declared a pandemic if 1 person is dying a day from covid? As sad as it would be for those family members it really is insignificant compared to the amount of people who die daily anyway

It does to me.
justasking111 · 02/08/2020 14:01

You know all these tests, well if NHS etc. are being tested more than once do those come back as new figures or duplicate figures?

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 14:06

I read Sikora on Twitter this morning saying that hospital deaths were something like 4 yesterday and PHE whacked another 60-odd onto the numbers.

Something is not right - they seem to have certain thresholds they don't want the deaths to drop below and then they move the goalposts - they did everything to stop it dropping below 200 consistently... then they did the same around the 100 mark and now they seem to be desperate for around 70-75 a day. It's manipulating the public into demanding measures they want to introduce so they can claim it's the public's idea.

SpnBaby1967 · 02/08/2020 14:21

Sorry but the lack of empathy on MN these days is astounding. Just been on the eid being cancelled and 15 yr old DD upset and fuck me there are some nasty fuckers on there!!

WouldBeGood · 02/08/2020 14:39

That Eid thread is horrible.

DominaShantotto · 02/08/2020 14:42

@WouldBeGood

That Eid thread is horrible.
Socially acceptable chance to have some racism going on - we all know people love the chance to have a pop at certain ethnic groups.

Once the Eid stuff is over - we're heading for a new era of socially sanctioned fatty bashing, and of course disability hate and "autism is all made up" type nonsense all over the place.

Social cohesion is fucked.

TheOrchidKiller · 02/08/2020 14:49

"Quite why some middle aged housewife in Cheshire is doing the Government's work for them though is beyond me!"

You're not only doing it for them, but better!

Agree with the comments that if cases are going up but hospital admissions are not, that it's not a disaster.

If they make the over-50s stay the fuck at home that's a big proportion of keyworkers at home. Slight flaw in that plan.

As for schools vs pubs, why such a binary choice? I don't believe we can't do other things in mitigation, or that we need to shut down all pubs or licensed venues full-stop to keep schools open. Of course I want schools open- for my own child to complete his education & because all children deserve a decent education.

I also want pubs & restaurants to stay open. I have a child (who was let down by the education system) working in that industry who needs that job, as do countless others, who don't have their DPs to fall back on.

TheOrchidKiller · 02/08/2020 14:55

I read the Eid one yesterday & couldn't believe it.

The "I'm sorry but you'll just have to suck it up" brigade really get up my nose, not only on threads like that but in other aspects of life. Some people have no empathy or compassion. They were the mean ones at school.

IAintentDead · 02/08/2020 14:58
@Allflightscancelled As a teacher I would rather have more limited community transmission with pubs shut if I am going to be exposed PPE less to over 1200 kids. Although I think I'm not really the target market on this thread so will pop off now.
That makes a lot of sense. Although the 2 issues seem very separate people going to the pub and then coming home and spending close time with family members who are then going in to schools could increase the scope for spread.

There isn't a target market in terms of beliefs, we have a wide range of views and share them respectfully.

We are not one homogeneous group - our criteria is that we are respectful of others views so long as that doesn't involve telling others their views are wrong and or that people are thick for believing different theories etc.

@iamapixie

Late to the party but hello again. I commented on the very first thread. I sometimes wonder what happened to some of the people who posted a lot early on and then have disappeared over time. Obv there was the horribleness with Lilac - Hope she's OK - , but there were others too who vanished. I wonder if some just escaped social media generally.
Probably a lot of that. I'm spending less time on fb, not so much because of dementoring, I'm using snooze quite liberally, but because there's not much on there, on anything really. Even stuff like running groups. People are doing less, and the nastiness of a few months ago has probably encouraged people to keep to themselves more for fear of a backlash. Sad.

If Bo Jo cancelled christmas on xmas eve, there would be people rejoicing to be honest. I know older people who bah humbug about xmas all the time, that is mainly because they either have no family or family are too far away to be with them or want to be with them. We are lucky to have three generations living locally so mothers day, fathers day, easter were sad affairs this year.

Some folk rejoice in the cancellation of religious and other family events which of course mean getting together with loved ones. There are some crowing on fb locally that fireworks are cancelled here, well some of us like to enjoy halloween, fireworks and xmas, especially children.

Around 2 people are actually dying per day in hospitals...

www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/08/COVID-19-total-announced-deaths-2-August-2020.xlsx

We will still be locked down when deaths are 0 a day for a year.
