Have you done drugs??

Went out for a few drinks with work friends tonight and the conversation turned to drugs. I was the only one who’d never done any, not even a joint. The others have all done pretty much everything- weed, coke, Es, speed, MDMA, even heroin in one case.

I’m not virulently anti drugs, they just never crossed my path growing up and now I’m middle aged with kids and get quite excited when I’ve got cause to crack open the Solpadeine Grin but by the end of the conversation I felt practically Armish!

Am I the only one? Please say not...

No but used to hang round with people who did everything. Alcohol was my drug of choice at the time. I have since switched that for caffeine.

MaryBoBary · 01/08/2020 08:12

Yes, weed, pills, Coke, mcat and magic mushrooms. Still smoke weed but wouldn't do any of the others again. Except maybe mushrooms for the ridiculous conversations.

dudsville · 01/08/2020 08:12

I came across marijuana twice in my life, one of them was when a friend's suggested it as a sleep aid. He gave me three cigarettes. I smoked one, became paranoid. I knew it was paranoia and that the cops weren't really coming for me, but it was unpleasant. I smoked another one several years later. I didn't get paranoid but didn't really benefit from it either. I still have the 3rd. I mentioned it to someone who seemed to know a lot about drugs. She said you want too take something opposite to your normal state and as I'm pretty chilled marijuana would just be more if the same. She said uppers would give me a kick but i really don't fancy it. When i was a kid i was led to believe I'd be tempted by drugs at every turn. My experience is the opposite, i literally don't ever come across it. I once ask a colleague about this and he said that he did drugs as did most of our colleagues. I never knew.

God there was a time in my early 20s I would try anything, every weekend I was taking coke and E.

tried acid one night and sat in a dry bath in a party rowing with imaginary oars for a few hour.

Took mushies in the dam and thought my bed was on the back of an elephant and that the curtains were a baby elephants ears.

One spectacular night on E I thought yoda had come to me and I spent ages talking to yoda and planning to be the next jedi

Would go to festivals and be off my tits all weekend. Honestly Had some of the best times in my life in drugs.

The comedown though was horrific, I'd sit shaking, sweating, spewing, ripping with the fear, eyeballs popping out ma head and actually having to remind myself to breathe and that I wasn't going to die

Those were the days. Wouldn't touch anything now mind you. maybe a line if it was offered

MuseumOfYou · 01/08/2020 08:26

No, far too terrified. Mind you, probably with good cause, I think I'm quite sensitive to chemicals. Was off my face for a day after having root canal treatment!

AnotherBiteMe · 01/08/2020 08:27

Live in London, was clubbing by 14. Had about 5 friend who I hung about with who were heavily into drugs (coke, weed, E's and even dabbled in heroin) but I've never taken drugs. My other group of 'straight' friends never dabbled either.

Shutupyoutart · 01/08/2020 08:29

Nope never appealed to me. Lost someone close though through an overdose as a kid and remember how devastated my family were so i never wanted to take anything. Do like a drink every now and then though :)

AfterSchoolWorry · 01/08/2020 08:32

Yep, I'm always amazed at people who never did. I wouldn't say anything but I secretly wonder how!

Pinkbunny2811 · 01/08/2020 08:33

I got offered a line off a bobby pin in a men's cubicle by another girl once. I was shut in there with her and she sat on the pissy toilet seat and just went: do you want some? as she pulled out a little baggie...I said no.
Never met her before and never saw her again.

Incidentally I was on a date with a guy who also told me his ex got killed by a lion on safari in Africa.

It was an interesting night.

Estrellente · 01/08/2020 08:34

Really interesting reading everyone’s experiences. Some made me laugh, some made me sad, I guess that sums it all up really!

No judgement here at all- as I say, if anything I was judging myself yesterday for apparently being such an inadvertent square! But I’m happy to read that whilst I’m in a minority, it’s not a minority of 1.

I'm in my late 50s and have never tried anything. I had friends who did at school and university (mainly cannabis) but drugs never appealed to me, partly because I never smoked tobacco either and that was the way most of my friends started.

LunaRabbit · 01/08/2020 08:37

Never drunk a sip of alcohol, smoked a cigarette, or done any other drugs. I lost my whole childhood and teenagehood to depression and other mental health issues, so I guess now I value my autonomy more than most other people. Drugs really are lame when you think about them. Why spent money on fake emotions when you can buy food, new clothes, new books, new video games, a concert ticket, or whatever you're into?

Cooroo · 01/08/2020 08:42

I'm 60 now.

In my late teens and twenties I smoked dope (hash or whatever it's called now), did speed quite a few times and 3 or 4 mushroom trips. Nothing now for years.

My DD is very interested in shrooms (psilocybin) as a psychologist and that has made me want to try them again - but it would have to be in a very controlled and supported environment.

An elderly and very respectable man in U3A waxed lyrical about his one mushroom experience to me. 'Most profound experience of my life'.

TheVanguardSix · 01/08/2020 08:49

A few tokes of cannabis in my 20s- really, really didn't like it. Nothing else BUT I did drop acid once and it was a horrible experience. I was never, ever, ever interested in drugs and I'm actually amazed I took that tab. My brother's a drug addict and I grew up with that, so this really shaped me as far as drugs go. Alcohol and drugs never really called to me. I was in an industry comprised of more coke than people, but I was never tempted. It was just like, "No thanks". Same with MDMA. I was always worried I'd end up that one poor sod, dead on a dance floor after taking MDMA. Not worth the risk.

Icequeen01 · 01/08/2020 09:02

I had a fab time in my late teens and early twenties - without drugs. Never tried them and just don't understand why anyone would want to. When I see people on tv snorting cocaine it makes me feel physically sick.

For those of you with DC's now; would you honestly be happy if you kids took drugs?

BogRollBOGOF · 01/08/2020 09:25

Even less than my grandma who partook of my "brother's" spliff when the car was stolen.

I've been around cannabis a fair bit, but I had zero interest in smoking and it seemed stupid to smoke tobacco to get the effect of the weed. My friends never put pressure on me to try.

Only once have I been around harder drugs. I went with a friend to see her school friend at uni a couple of times. Year 1 they got stoned but it was a pleasant, chilled evening. Year 2 the air was so thick with cannabis I got passively stonned and slept through a raging houseparty. The next day was the most tedious day of my life surrounded by people who were moping around after the night before, stuck in a house in a random city with no idea where I was (an not an A-Z to be found Wink )

I was not convinced that drugs were a greag way to waste a weekend. I suspect that my mind could do weird stuff on them anyway.

DoTheRunningMan · 01/08/2020 09:32

Yes. I hit my teens around the time of rave culture, and it was really common in my friendship group and wider circle. Regularly smoked weed and took ecstasy. Tried acid and speed. Took a fair bit of coke in my early 20s. Tried crack a couple of times and smoked heroin once (urgh). I was a bit of a hedonist and curious about drugs.

That was all years ago, though. Haven’t done drugs in close to 20 years, don’t even drink alcohol anymore. My only vice is vaping, which I’m gearing up to quit!

I can’t say I regret my drug taking - had some fun times - but I think I probably wasted a lot of time getting high when I could’ve been doing other more beneficial things. Youth is wasted on the young, though, eh?

billysboy · 01/08/2020 09:47

have done all sorts barring heroin or crack

always had alcohol in my life and its one of the hardest to kick as its socially acceptable but also very damaging

the lock down has helped immensely as have kicked the habit of the pub 3 times a week , gearing up for the next step soon

rosegoldivy · 01/08/2020 09:54

@icequeen01 of course i wouldn't be happy if my DD took drugs when she's older. To be honest sometimes it shocks me thinking back to the shit I did and the positions I got myself in

But when I was in my 20's I wasn't really thinking about my future kids welfare, I was only looking for a good time

FrancoBranco · 01/08/2020 11:31

@SapphosRock

Don’t you all worry about the effect it’s had on your body/brain??

Yes sometimes but I took them every weekend for years and seem to be okay so far. Made some amazing lifelong friends from that time which I wouldn't have met if it wasn't for drugs / clubbing. They all seem to be alright too apart from some mild mental health issues which they may have developed anyway.

I actually think drugs can be positive for mental health, I believe MDMA was designed as an anti depressant as it gives depressed people a reference point of what happiness feels like.

Studies have shown that MDMA used alongside therapy can cure chronic PTSD in soldiers. I truly believe this and wish more studies into MDMA, LSD, mushrooms etc. would be done. It's weird that these substances are so legislated and heavily controlled when you can buy alcohol, which is much more damaging, at any shop.

Before my rave days I was a painfully shy, awkward and traumatised 18 year old who had c-PTSD from serious sexual assaults in my childhood. The E and the camaraderie around rave culture genuinely had a positive effect on my mental health and changed my life for the better. I could never regret those days.

Spidey66 · 01/08/2020 11:35

Cannabis, but only in Amsterdam or if there was a spliff going round.

Tried speed and Es

That's it really. I've always been happy enough with alcohol as my substance of choice.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 01/08/2020 11:47

I've only ever done poppers Halo.

MsSquiz · 01/08/2020 11:50

Yep, in my mid twenties I took:
Poppers
MCat/Meow Meow
Speed
Ecstasy
Ketamine
Cocaine
Smoked weed

I even resorted to snorting cold and flu tablets when the coke ran out until the caffeine gave me heart palpitations and I was convinced I would died! It didn't stop me taking other things though

I haven't touched anything except alcohol in about 5 years (34 now) since being with DH who has never touched an illegal substance in his life

MsSquiz · 01/08/2020 11:51

Oh, tried acid once, too.
Worst experience of my life! I was sky high and then on the floor sobbing and crying.

Zoflorabore · 01/08/2020 11:52

Weed and speed as a late teen. Nothing at all from then until my late 30’s when I met a new friendship group who all took coke and I ended up doing that and very much enjoying it for a couple of years and then decided to stop as i made some bad decisions while having it, risky behaviour etc and it wasn’t me.

I still see those friends now and again and they’re all still taking coke and always skint. It’s a horrible drug.

I was spiked with ecstasy on a night out when I was 19 because the idiot told me. It was one of the worst nights of my life. I’ve never understood the appeal.
