Has anyone ever moved to an area they just didn't like?

Have you ever moved to an area where you disliked? And why?

I moved to an area in the Midlands and I put my DD in the local school here. Ever since moving here it's been horrible. I've been shouted at by another parent on the playground. Had stroppy neighbours that won't let me cut my own apple tree in my garden. And basically the entire village is cliquey and horrible and I wished I'd never moved here.
Anyone else? Please tell me I'm not on my own.

Midlands as well.
Moved from London because Ex DH already had a property there and we wanted to start a family.
Depressing, grey, miles from the sea, odd locals, deeply suspicious of ‘outsiders’, chain restaurants and pubs selling shit food, just utterly soul destroying.

Yes! Where did you live before? Have you just moved with the region or have you moved from a different area a reasonable way away?

Yes, I didn't like it when we moved and I still don't like the place or the house but needs must unfortunately.

Dh is originally from here. We were priced out of London. Had to move somewhere cheap. He’s not lived here since he went to uni 18 years ago. He forgot what a shithole it is.

We now can’t wait to get out.

We moved to a lovely village in South Yorkshire but I'm still not overly happy 3 years on. We've never really settled and it was a big culture difference to where we were from down south. We've made the decision that in 5 years time, we're moving back down south! The people are lovely, there's alot in the surrounding area we like but it's just not for me long-term.

I live in a lovely area of the West Midlands but moved to an area of East Midlands and felt much the same as you. It was a city but like going back 30 years in time, shops shut at 5, people doing glue on the streets (took me 6 months of staring at a man everyday to realise why he had his head in a bag!) even the criminality was behind!
So... East or West?!
(Through there are some area of west that are like stepping back i time - Dudley V Bham for example!)

Yes. I moved to Milton Keynes for work reasons once. I absolutely loathed it there.

I also briefly moved to Dundee once. It was also dire (albeit in a different way).

Yes, I’m a country girl but spent 4 years living in Luton due to work commitments.

Perhaps we were just lucky, or perhaps the town didn’t live up to its reputation, but I enjoyed my time there. I had my babies there, got out and about and made friends. When we moved back to the country we found ourselves with batshit crazy churlish neighbours. It didn’t bother me too much as there is quite a lot of distance between our houses, but it did make me realise how lucky we were to have lovely neighbours in the town, and how much that probably affected my positive feelings towards Luton.

Snap! Midlands here too (wondering if you're in the same area). Locals are incredibly xenophobic and suspicious of "outsiders". I am ridiculed and mistrusted for being a working mum with kids in childcare (most locals don't work after having children as they can't afford childcare). I absolutely hate it. Helpfully, DH has finally lost patience with his job (the only thing that was keeping us here) so we are starting to tentatively think about leaving, in the next couple of years. I can't wait.

@Eeeeeeeok I've sadly been living in the midlands for the past 5 years, but prior to then I lived in Wales and that was beautiful and I'd love to go back.

@Billyjoearmstrong it really is a shithole as well. And to think I have to stay here for another 3 years 😢. When are you looking to leave?

@jakeyboy1 I know what you mean re people high on crap on the streets, they're just sat on benches conked out! It's grim.

Tell me people, where is lovely to live? I intend to buy a house in 3 years time, until then I need to grin and bare.

I hate people describing whole areas as shitholes. It just makes you look like snobs.

@StoneColdBitch I hope you manage to get out soon. I find it so stressful having to deal with people round here, they're suspicious like you say, it's very villiage-y and I never came here intentionally it happened by accident and I've stayed because my DD is now at the local school, whom have also been a bloody nightmare and very stressful to deal with.

Yes, a village in Leicestershire. I’ve never had the remotest difficulty making friends in anywhere I’d previously lived (several different countries and other parts of England), and I did all the right things in terms of meeting people, volunteering, getting involved in village stuff, child at school, but this place was insular, small-minded and xenophobic, and I’ve never left anywhere with more pleasure.

What is it with the Midlands showing up so often on these threads?

Yes I moved to a small market town and lived there for two years it reminded me of A League Of Gentleman type sketch, I absolutely hated it. Moved before lockdown this year.

And yes to suddenly being terribly unusual as a working mother. Out of the 27 children in DS’s reception class, I think three of us worked, which I found really surprising.

@fullofsurprises Our local state schools are all so bad we will have to pay for private education if we stick around - one of many reasons I'm keen to get out!

Roughly where in the Midlands are you all? We are fairly central, in ex-mining territory.

It's such a relief to feel less alone!

My area was the reverse of deprived, @LST. It was simply an unbelievably miserable experience living there.
