Let me start by saying I’m in Scotland so this isn’t about masks per se, but about the whole silly dance we are being made to do in order to go about our lives at the moment.

I went to a shopping centre today and won't be back.

It’s the first time I’ve worn a mask for any longer than a quick run into the local coop. I was probably in the centre for an hour and a half but there was sweat pouring down my neck. I felt suffocated and silenced. Hated it.

My baby looked at me like I was a monster and my toddler couldn’t hear me when I talked.

But it wasn’t just masks that were the issue. There was a ludicrous one way system, which makes absolutely no sense to me if we are wearing masks and social distancing. Then every shop had a makeshift entry and exit and their own one way system which no one was observing.

At every turn I was being monitored by security guards, eyeballing me in anticipation of a wrongdoing, ready to pounce.

Almost every shop had a guard on duty forcing you to rub gel on your hands and that of my child before entering.

There were queues everywhere. All but one set of toilets shut, so queue for that too, and toilets themselves as dirty as ever because so many people using the same ones and no cleaning.

Inexplicably in most shops all but one set of tills were shut, again forcing people to congregate in long queues.

All the restaurants were again inexplicably closed apart from, yep, McDonalds and Costa. Both under small enclaves at the back of the centre. But in them you are allowed to take your mask off and eat off a table more or less. But in the main, high roofed wide open walkways of the centre, the mask must go back on.

The shops had little stock.

When I dared approach an M&S assistant to ask for a size (with a visor on like all the rest of the assistants at an angle that perfectly channels their exhalations directly at the person they’re talking too) I was barked at as if I was a naughty schoolgirl to the extent that I put the item back on the rack and walked out without buying anything.

Does anyone else think this is all utterly ludicrous?

Shops will not survive this.

We are all adults with our own minds and perfectly able to manage our selves. Why make masks mandatory if we then have to do all this makeshift posturing to appear to be avoiding each other when really we are being herded closer together.

As someone who you might consider a “hobby shopper” as in it’s one of my pastimes (and I’m not interested in any opinions about having a better hobby, if there weren’t millions like me there wouldn’t be any shops at all). I’m someone who will browse and buy, will pick up bits I don’t really need but just want. I will spend my money happily- if the experience gives me pleasure.

But now I think it’s going to be online for me. I won’t be back at the shopping centre. I won’t be visiting our city centre either as it’s just the same.

I've had mostly brilliant staff but 1⃣ trip to waitrose was beyond the pail.

Mostly great in there but visit... And only because they have the easiest parking... I vowed only to return if desperate.

Places have gone mad and don't in covid. The best thing we can all do when out is actually stop being polite and talking to each other.
We get covid from the peoples mouths and breath and then where that breath with covid lands.

Everyone has latched onto hands without remembering where the covid from hands comes from.
So eg. I have my own gel and I'm being grilled, why I have not used shops. That interaction put him and me at more risk than if I had not used any gel at all

WhoKnowsWhatsAroundTheCorner · 24/07/2020 23:17

Why are people assuming the shopping centre is in Glasgow? Other Scottish cities are available.

Apart from that - it’s a Global Pandemic- the masks and one way systems are there for a reason. I don’t see the point in moaning - I’m just glad some aspects of life are opening up.

kittensarecute · 24/07/2020 23:17

Today is my birthday and I went shopping then for a meal. All felt normal and fine! Best day I've had in ages.

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 23:18

@Rockbird

The can't do attitude is coming from the people determined to make this as miserable as possible as far as I can see. We all bloody hate masks, I wear glasses and have ASD. They're my idea of hell but I still manage to cope for the duration of a trip out. The whole situation is shit, we just have to make the best of it. I'd rather be out in a mask than home in lockdown.
Fab. Good for you. I’d rather be at home than out in a mask, following ridiculous one way systems. Whaddyaknow, we’re all different.
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/07/2020 23:18

Also in Scotland and am quite used to wearing a mask now, but shopping as a leisure activity is over for me for now - and I used to be able to spend many any hour browsing. I am quite happy keeping our local Hermes lady in business.

divafever99 · 24/07/2020 23:18

Completely agree op, I won't be venturing out. If I can't Amazon prime it I'm doing without! I though I might need to go out this weekend as I ripped a pair of Jeans that I needed to replace. As luck would have it I found an old pair stuffed at the back at the wardrobe which I will make do with. I actually felt relief that I wouldn't need to go out! It will be the death of our already struggling high street.

supadoopa · 24/07/2020 23:19

Yes I have my own gel in my bag so why would I touch a bottle touched by hundreds before me just to qualify for entry to your shop?

Yester · 24/07/2020 23:19

I am feeling like a proper anomaly as I have always hated clothes shopping and now find it easier as there are less people about. Mind you I'm not convinced my annual spend of about £250 is going to keep the shops going.

Travelledtheworld · 24/07/2020 23:19

I agree. Everyone in my small local supermarket was sweaty and grumpy this morning. The checkout staff have been give a choice of wearing face visits of masks ? WTF.
I find my mask interferes with my eyesite and it also makes me sneeze. The only good thing is that in our small Cotswolds town they have marked the 2m social distancing thing on the pavement by spray painting a.ines of flowers. No nasty black and yellow hazard tape for us.

Try working an NHS shift OP. And online shopping?

Oh fuck off. That's not what this is about.*

Glad someone else said it.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 24/07/2020 23:21

I find the one way systems make me panic. I forget to pick something up, then have to do another loop again, get stuck behind someone trying to decide which jar of strawberry jam she wants. All in a mask.

Although, I have better luck with a homemade mask. Those disposable ones are really uncomfortable.

amusedtodeath1 · 24/07/2020 23:21

I find shopping malls depressing anyway, but that does sound awful OP. This Virus is a giant PITA, but it will get better, eventually.Flowers

Quite well aware of that. It’s the description of where the McDonalds and Costas are in relation to the rest of the centre. I’ve lived in Aberdeen too and know it’s not one of the ones there and worked In Edinburgh. Pretty sure I know which one the OP is talking about and will now avoid it. Re your viewpoint though, I agree and in fact John Lewis in the Galleries seemed to both welcome people, keep most tills open to minimise queues and police hand sanitation but in like a nice way.

Totally agree with this. John Lewis have a foot operated one that was quite good. Otherwise I tell them I’ll use my own and then show them I’m using it.
Tootletum · 24/07/2020 23:25

Yep couldn't agree more. I have no problem with the masks, it's the endless signs and different rules in every shop and arsy shop assistants shouting about some hand sanitiser I didn't see. I only went to the local strip last week for the first time and have no intention of going back. Why would I when I can get everything online with none of this shit.

supadoopa · 24/07/2020 23:25

Maybe I’ll give Buchanan galleries a chance then.

DisobedientHamster · 24/07/2020 23:26

YANBU. It's done for now. I'm in an area where mask wearing is compulsory and has nearly 100% compliance, but no more one-way systems and guards distancing people. I've spent a fortune here, so much easier to browse and shop. I've been here a month like this. Not interested in going to a shop with one way system, one in/one out, lots of guards spacing people and masks, too. I'll just order online or not at all.

SockYarn · 24/07/2020 23:26

If you're in Scotland you're allowed to wear a visor. Still makes for an echoey, warm experience, but less shit than a mask.

It's not just clothes shopping. I rarely clothes shop. But I can spend hours mooching round charity shops, craft shops, haberdashery shops, bookshops.

But not now that there's other customers hissing at me to stay away and shop workers barking about not touching things.

Dashel · 24/07/2020 23:28

It’s so depressing. Wtf are you supposed to do on a weekend now? Everything is either closed or just depressing with regulations and stares if you dare to be in the wrong place as you need to psychically know when other people want to look at something in the 10m vicinity of where you are.

It’s just horrible

Rafflesway · 24/07/2020 23:28

Couldn't agree more and especially with regards to stock!

Try buying a tv! My God, what a nightmare! Ours died last week. Went to Currys - absolutely naff all! All shelves completely scalped!😨. AO.Com - no stock of those suitable! Took days to find someone who had stock online of a suitable model and still had to wait over a week for delivery.

Shopping is a drudge at present! 😤

AgentCooper · 24/07/2020 23:29

Weirdly, I went into town (Glasgow city centre) last week and though I was dreading the weirdness it was lovely. Things felt a wee bit normal. Buskers on Buchanan St, office workers walking about in suits. I was in TK Maxx and masks aside it didn’t feel too different. The staff were lovely (but they always are in there).

I live in the southside of Glasgow and have been into Shawlands a few times on the bus now. It’s been alright, just good to see places looking busy again. Haven’t braved a mall yet but we were thinking Silverburn tomorrow...

I went into our local card shop in the village a few weeks ago, after they spent all of lockdown complaining all over Facebook about having to close and the impact on them. Well they opened up and I went in to get some cards... as soon as I stepped across the threshold the woman stepped towards me with her hand up and said “you must sanitise your hands before you come in”

Now it’s not the concept Of having clean hands that bothers me, but her delivery. Here I am prepared to spend far too much on some pieces of paper in her tiny shop and she’s barking orders at me. I don’t think so.

Try the fort instead (if you’re in Glasgow). I was pleasantly surprised there. No need to wear mask until in the actual shops which helps because it’s outdoors, had a nice feel about it (almost normal). None of the shops asked us to use hand gel, though if you wanted to they had it. The staff I saw were all very helpful too. Boots there is quite clever how they have the makeup set up now (and you can return it after opening and trying at home if you aren’t happy with it because they don’t have testers). Maybe because they’ve been open longer than the indoor shopping centres they have figured out what works best.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/07/2020 23:30

The whole experience of shopping is now an endurance test, no fun at all.
I was in a supermarket last night, which was well-run, uncrowded and well stocked, but even so, the mask wearing was just so uncomfortable and sweaty that I couldn't stay in there a second longer than necessary - couldn't concentrate, couldn't see properly as glasses kept steaming up, and ended up leaving without finishing the shop properly. I certainly won't be shopping for pleasure.
I think some people are just more sensitive to the physical feel of things, I'm someone who has always had issues with labels on clothes, the feel of certain fabrics and itchiness. If things don't feel right I am distracted and uncomfortable and find it hard to function.
My thoughts are with all those NHS staff who have had to work in masks for long shifts for the past months.
