Let me start by saying I’m in Scotland so this isn’t about masks per se, but about the whole silly dance we are being made to do in order to go about our lives at the moment.

I went to a shopping centre today and won't be back.

It’s the first time I’ve worn a mask for any longer than a quick run into the local coop. I was probably in the centre for an hour and a half but there was sweat pouring down my neck. I felt suffocated and silenced. Hated it.

My baby looked at me like I was a monster and my toddler couldn’t hear me when I talked.

But it wasn’t just masks that were the issue. There was a ludicrous one way system, which makes absolutely no sense to me if we are wearing masks and social distancing. Then every shop had a makeshift entry and exit and their own one way system which no one was observing.

At every turn I was being monitored by security guards, eyeballing me in anticipation of a wrongdoing, ready to pounce.

Almost every shop had a guard on duty forcing you to rub gel on your hands and that of my child before entering.

There were queues everywhere. All but one set of toilets shut, so queue for that too, and toilets themselves as dirty as ever because so many people using the same ones and no cleaning.

Inexplicably in most shops all but one set of tills were shut, again forcing people to congregate in long queues.

All the restaurants were again inexplicably closed apart from, yep, McDonalds and Costa. Both under small enclaves at the back of the centre. But in them you are allowed to take your mask off and eat off a table more or less. But in the main, high roofed wide open walkways of the centre, the mask must go back on.

The shops had little stock.

When I dared approach an M&S assistant to ask for a size (with a visor on like all the rest of the assistants at an angle that perfectly channels their exhalations directly at the person they’re talking too) I was barked at as if I was a naughty schoolgirl to the extent that I put the item back on the rack and walked out without buying anything.

Does anyone else think this is all utterly ludicrous?

Shops will not survive this.

We are all adults with our own minds and perfectly able to manage our selves. Why make masks mandatory if we then have to do all this makeshift posturing to appear to be avoiding each other when really we are being herded closer together.

As someone who you might consider a “hobby shopper” as in it’s one of my pastimes (and I’m not interested in any opinions about having a better hobby, if there weren’t millions like me there wouldn’t be any shops at all). I’m someone who will browse and buy, will pick up bits I don’t really need but just want. I will spend my money happily- if the experience gives me pleasure.

But now I think it’s going to be online for me. I won’t be back at the shopping centre. I won’t be visiting our city centre either as it’s just the same.

Well here in South east London, its almost business as usual.Even in shops yesterday, lots of people had their mask off their face in tesco(drawn down under chin)
Same for people in buses).
Am not gonna lie.I do the same as well because usually after about 10 or 15 minutes with these masks over my nose and mouth, I start hyperventilating.Am not gonna die of suffocation. So yea..

Also it scares my baby anytime I put them on.He starts giving me this weird looks.lol

Spending far too much on stylish masks out here but this one is my favourite by far:

I'm in London. We've been to Westfield a few times. It's fine. No one forced us to rub hand gel on, just offered it with a smile. No one barked at us or eyeballed us. No real queues but I go first thing in the morning just as everything is opening, that's always been my habit as I can't bear crowds. I suggest you do that OP. Places definitely less crowded when you go early.

IAintentDead · 25/07/2020 00:24

@DisobedientHamster

Firstly as a young otherwise healthy woman I have a tiny, tiny chance of dying from covid. There are only 20 cases overnight in Scotland so I think that’s a 1 in 13000 or something chance of catching it. Most of our cases are currently in care or hospital settings too. Not community transmission. I’m really not worried about dying from covid.

How very dare you?! You could spread it to the entire population of Alaska in record time just with your eyes, your thoughts are murderous! At any rate, prison isn't good enough, you should also be ostracised a la a Charlie Booker episode of Black Mirror for even thinking about yourself, your selfishness is worthy of lifetime deletion, my god, the science behind this says everyone will die before no-deal Brexit or get sick and be disabled forever and ever and it will all be your fault for even thinking such thoughts!

Dies shaking and crying.

I think I love you
verypeckish · 25/07/2020 00:28

@Yaottie

Before today you just knew it was the people wearing masks that forgot about social distancing so you could spot who to swerve round. People without masks were still being perfectly sensible. Now everyone is meandering around practically bumping off the walls and each other.

So no, I don't blame you

I've been saying this for weeks. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

@DisobedientHamster 'Dies shaking and crying' Grin ROFL

There was never any joy in shopping for me so welcome to the club. How is it working in restaurants and pubs?

You are not wrong about the sweaty, uncomfortable heat in masks. Bless the staff in hospitals who are wearing them for entire shifts.

sensol · 25/07/2020 00:35

I agree with you op I have been doing this for the last 10 weeks ish and tbh I am drained.
We have to wear the mask pretty much from the moment we leave our front door to the moment we return unless eating and drinking !
My husband drops me off at work and we have to wear the mask in the car if not there is the threat of a fine. I then wear my mask for 8 hours at work (unless I am having lunch) when I leave I walk home approx 30 mins walk where I must also wear the mask it's been 34 degrees here today and I could honestly cry with the thought of doing it all again tomorrow.
Shopping is just an extension of the mask wearing ! I go in get what I need and come out. I used to enjoy a look round the shops but can't face it anymore. Shops are already closing down here

MadameMeursault · 25/07/2020 00:37

Stop whingeing OP, many people have lived through far worse than this, we all have to do our bit for the shielding and vulnerable. It’s not the end of the world. Get a grip, ffs.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/07/2020 00:40

Haven't been in a shop since March. Can't see me going anytime soon. I technically I have an exemption to masks but everyone is being so awful, I darent risk it. My mental health is screwed. Quite possibly so is my marriage. He'll get the kids. At the moment I think I'm done. What's the point of living like this?

CountessFrog · 25/07/2020 00:40

I went to John Lewis yesterday before masks were made compulsory.

Older staff welcoming, normal. Younger staff acting like dictators. I was considering a Dyson hairdryer (£300) but there were two girls eyeballing me because I had the temerity to pick it up.

So I didn’t buy it.

Sadly there was very little stock of clothes to buy. A linen top that I quite liked but I wasn’t sure on sizing. I couldn’t try it on. I was t prepared to buy in both sizes and try at home, then return one.

So I didn’t buy it.

It was joyless. And joyless in a mask now. I can’t see much point going again. Shops will be dead really soon.

wentawaycameback · 25/07/2020 00:40

Exactly - get a grip. I am not calling troll - but really?!!!

supadoopa · 25/07/2020 00:41

Someone please explain the troll thing?

PushyMeez · 25/07/2020 00:45

I'm with you OP. It's a steaming pile of absurd shit

Staffy1 · 25/07/2020 00:48

Yes, it is ludicrous. My mother went to the library last week and came out with nothing as she said any book browsed had to be put in a bucket and quarantined for a bit before it could be put back on the shelf, so she felt uncomfortable trying to choose one with the staff staring at her and no one else there. Went to a private hospital today and was about to go in when someone came running up and shouted "stop right there!" I then got instructions to go drive round the back and sit in the car until someone called me. Once in, the medical staff were great and totally relaxed and nice, I admire the way they are going about there business as calmly as possible and being friendly and reassuring, totally the opposite of the reception staff. On the one hand I am very concerned about this virus, but on the other, can't see how things can continue like this, it's really is joy-sucking, as you say.

wentawaycameback · 25/07/2020 00:49

Wearing a mask in order to reduce the spread of a virus whilst out shopping for essentials like £300 hairdryers - dreadful - really, really dreadful.

snowsuit · 25/07/2020 00:52

honestly can't believe so many people are making a fuss about having to wear masks. i don't even find them much of a hassle – i get used to wearing mine after having it on for a few minutes and then barely notice it – but even if i did, it's a small price to pay for protecting a) other vulnerable people and b) yourself. if you think a mask is uncomfortable, wait til you see what they do to put someone on a ventilator...

Fudgefeet · 25/07/2020 00:53

Completely agree! I stood in a queue for about 20 mins today and could feel myself getting dizzy and nauseous through lack of proper air wearing this stupid mask. I am sensible about social distancing but wearing this thing made me feel so vulnerable and I found myself touching my mouth more than I usually would.

alltoomuchrightnow · 25/07/2020 01:00

Try working in retail then. You don't have to go to shops, I have to to survive right now.
This afternoon with no air con, no windows and high humidity I had to move about 50 palettes, break down about 200 boxes, pick about 300 items all at the same time as helping customers (no lifts or escalators working either, so many many stairs climbed per shift) I had 11 hours of this with a 15 minute sit down. My face is raw and I'm soaked in sweat.
