Let me start by saying I’m in Scotland so this isn’t about masks per se, but about the whole silly dance we are being made to do in order to go about our lives at the moment.

I went to a shopping centre today and won't be back.

It’s the first time I’ve worn a mask for any longer than a quick run into the local coop. I was probably in the centre for an hour and a half but there was sweat pouring down my neck. I felt suffocated and silenced. Hated it.

My baby looked at me like I was a monster and my toddler couldn’t hear me when I talked.

But it wasn’t just masks that were the issue. There was a ludicrous one way system, which makes absolutely no sense to me if we are wearing masks and social distancing. Then every shop had a makeshift entry and exit and their own one way system which no one was observing.

At every turn I was being monitored by security guards, eyeballing me in anticipation of a wrongdoing, ready to pounce.

Almost every shop had a guard on duty forcing you to rub gel on your hands and that of my child before entering.

There were queues everywhere. All but one set of toilets shut, so queue for that too, and toilets themselves as dirty as ever because so many people using the same ones and no cleaning.

Inexplicably in most shops all but one set of tills were shut, again forcing people to congregate in long queues.

All the restaurants were again inexplicably closed apart from, yep, McDonalds and Costa. Both under small enclaves at the back of the centre. But in them you are allowed to take your mask off and eat off a table more or less. But in the main, high roofed wide open walkways of the centre, the mask must go back on.

The shops had little stock.

When I dared approach an M&S assistant to ask for a size (with a visor on like all the rest of the assistants at an angle that perfectly channels their exhalations directly at the person they’re talking too) I was barked at as if I was a naughty schoolgirl to the extent that I put the item back on the rack and walked out without buying anything.

Does anyone else think this is all utterly ludicrous?

Shops will not survive this.

We are all adults with our own minds and perfectly able to manage our selves. Why make masks mandatory if we then have to do all this makeshift posturing to appear to be avoiding each other when really we are being herded closer together.

As someone who you might consider a “hobby shopper” as in it’s one of my pastimes (and I’m not interested in any opinions about having a better hobby, if there weren’t millions like me there wouldn’t be any shops at all). I’m someone who will browse and buy, will pick up bits I don’t really need but just want. I will spend my money happily- if the experience gives me pleasure.

But now I think it’s going to be online for me. I won’t be back at the shopping centre. I won’t be visiting our city centre either as it’s just the same.

Nah, it's fine. Terrible for the businesses that will not survive this though.

Online shopping is the only way now for me anyway. The heretofore moseying around, feeling the fabric, trying on and all that is long gone now.

But life is more simple and there is less traffic around such places.

thedalaisllama · 24/07/2020 23:00

I totally understand WHY the rules are in place. It's clear some people aren't able to manage themselves. I feel your pain though OP, covid has made life in general feel shit and more than a little miserable. I want to go back to normal normal.

Helpmyhair2019 · 24/07/2020 23:03

Agree 100%. It’s crap.

TooGood2BeTrue · 24/07/2020 23:03

This can't do attitude is so widespread now, be it shops, the National Trust, councils opening swimming pools to swimmers only and not families, ... None of it makes much sense, but it will put me and my family off using and supporting these places!

wherestheotherone · 24/07/2020 23:04

Yep hate it all. Masks make me claustrophobic and panic. Shops are hell because I can't really look at what I want to. There is no pleasure at all in shopping or going for a coffee. Life is very short on joy at the moment.

supadoopa · 24/07/2020 23:04

It’s not just about the shops.

Last weekend I went out for a drink with my friend to an area that generally has a “festival” like vibe at the weekends.

It was deserted and soul less and it felt like we were doing something wrong.

Went to the garden centre. Weird and empty.

Local coffee shop opened but they’ve put these big wibbly sheets of clear plastic between all the tables and now the place just steams up with condensation... again, seems counterproductive

I totally agree.

I’ll go to my local tesco metro if I must and everything else will be online.

I’d be less grumpy if there was any logic but:
1m distance in trains but you need masks
1m distance in restaurants but you don’t
Masks in shops but not in offices
No social distancing in schools but maybe if you’re in secondary

And who the fuck even understands who you’re allowed to see and when any more.

Home and internet for me until I either die of boredom and obesity or someone sorts it all out.

Yes, this is exactly it!

A can’t do attitude.

It’s almost like these places hate the fact they’re having to reopen and are making it as difficult as possible.

OP posts:
Michaelschofield · 24/07/2020 23:09

I’m with you OP it’s utterly ridiculous.

saraclara · 24/07/2020 23:09

@supadoopa

The staff aren’t helping with their manner. They all seem to suddenly resent doing the original parts of their job like helping people to shop...
I've found the opposite. Staff falling over themselves to be pleasant and welcoming. Like they know it's shitty but want to make it a bit better for us.
Tanfastic · 24/07/2020 23:09

I agree, it's shit. Other than go out for essentials, I'll just be continuing to shop online where I can.

It's a shame as I love a good shop and browse, but not in the current. Circumstances, absolutely no pleasure in it.

SockYarn · 24/07/2020 23:09

Totally agree that it's shit. No fun in it at all. Even without the masks. I am definitely going less and judging by the empty car park last time I went to a shopping centre near Glasgow lots of others giving it a swerve too.

Helpmyhair2019 · 24/07/2020 23:10

I agree it’s the lack of logic that drives me mad. Our local park has a sign up saying no more than one adult per child and no drinks allowed. Why can a child not take a water bottle to a park? I can go to a pub garden and have as many drinks as I like. Where is the logic in this?

Socialdistancing · 24/07/2020 23:10

It’s not that it’s hard. It’s just that it’s no fun.

SamSeabornforPresident · 24/07/2020 23:11

And who the fuck even understands who you’re allowed to see and when any more.

This x1000. I was saying to DH the other day 'so you're allowed 3 households, but no more than 8 people in the house? And does that include children? And how many if we stay in the garden?' 😂 Feck knows.

Re the masks, I found it Hellish when I first went out wearing one (hairdressers) but have actually found it easier since, so it may just be a case of getting used it it. (UNLESS of course you have a condition.. etc)

slipperywhensparticus · 24/07/2020 23:12

@RJnomore1

Ahh but don't forget bojo is going to "do something" about obesity

Its not going to be invest in mental health services for overeaters or take a sensible approach like mandatory traumatic lights on packaging or education being more than "sweets n drugs are bad for you mkay kids?"

He is probably going to do something with bikes schemes and put road tax up on cars which won't really make a dent in London so he will still get the London vote

supadoopa · 24/07/2020 23:12

I just can’t get over the contradictions either.

Pubs and cafes people sitting close and no masks, gabbing away..

But shopping potentially solo, not needing to speak to anyone else, easy to stay away from people, no eating or drinking so no bodily fluids slurping about...

It’s just crazy.

OOAOML · 24/07/2020 23:13

I'm in Scotland and I've been wearing a mask to the supermarket since before it was compulsory. What's pissing me off now is that local Asda and Tesco have ditched the one-way system and there are people everywhere.

I went into the centre (Edinburgh) yesterday and John Lewis, M&S, Primark, none of them had one-way systems but staff were friendly and the shops weren't crowded. JL had someone asking people going in if they wanted to use hand sanitizer but there weren't security guards stalking people. Weird that different shops are so different in different places.

I feel happier shopping when people keep their distance. Queues hand gel and masks would make me more likely to shop.

WearyandBleary · 24/07/2020 23:14

I hate shopping with amazon and try to support local - but my local bookshop had signs saying don’t touch the books unless you are buying!! How do you know without reading the back etc?

Amazon will absolutely cash in in this pandemic.

Rockbird · 24/07/2020 23:15

The can't do attitude is coming from the people determined to make this as miserable as possible as far as I can see. We all bloody hate masks, I wear glasses and have ASD. They're my idea of hell but I still manage to cope for the duration of a trip out. The whole situation is shit, we just have to make the best of it. I'd rather be out in a mask than home in lockdown.

supadoopa · 24/07/2020 23:15

And then I saw a news item today on a design for how the streets of Edinburgh will look when they’re set up for social distancing ... they are widening pavements and narrowing roads for this.. it’s permanent!

OP posts:
edwinbear · 24/07/2020 23:15

Completely agree OP. I did the shopping I needed before today so I don’t have to go again now masks are mandatory.

I couldn’t actually try on any of the clothes I needed so ended up with loads of stuff that either looks shit or doesn’t fit, but can be arsed with the hassle of returning them. So they will just sit in my wardrobe with the tags on.

Eastie77 · 24/07/2020 23:16

I'm not a fan of shopping in malls or "pottering around" shops but feel for people who do enjoy it as I agree it must be a joyless experience. I do think some people are exaggerating how terrible it all is (not you OP). My neighbour posted on social media that queuing to go into the supermarket has made her realise what living in a Third World country must be likeConfused

Wearing a mask in public is unpleasant but needs must I suppose. I'm just not convinced it will really have a great impact since there are so many caveats e.g. I understand logically why they are not mandatory for people eating out but so many studies have shown how the virus spreads rapidly in restaurants. Why bother enforcing masks in Supermarkets when it is not enforceable in smaller, more contained venues.

I have to take public transport for the first time in months next week to and I'm dreading it.

Drivingdownthe101 · 24/07/2020 23:16

@noblegiraffe

I went to the mall yesterday with my kids. We had a lovely wander round the shops, bought a load of tat and we all wore masks. Even my 7 year old coped.

Don’t know why you found it so hard.

Well for a start, I guess for all the reasons she put in her op? You found it fine... great. You keep going and spending your money, the economy sure does need it. I had a similar experience to the OP. Because guess what? We all experience things in different ways. That’s what makes us human. So I won’t be going into any physical shops for the foreseeable. Hopefully you’ll do enough shopping for the both of us Smile.
