Major supermarkets and coffee chains say they will not enforce new rules which say customers should wear face coverings from Friday.

Sainsburys, Asda, Co-op and Costa Coffee are among retailers saying they have no intention of policing the laws, which carry a penalty of a £100 fine.

sorry them again

DH popped into Tesco on the way into work this morning to get some milk. There was a woman on her way in in front of him who didn't have a mask on so the security guard told her she needed to go and get one.

DH pipes up and says she could have a valid medical reason to not be wearing one and its unfair to single her out in public this way.

Apparently a few people tutted but as DH is a stocky 6 foot 5 no one spoke up. The security guard let her in.

I remember being in halls myself, the isolation of a few students who just seemed to stay, alone in their rooms. Our halls were designed on the plans of a Swedish prison, and have not changed much over the years. It had a high suicide rate then, in the 1990s.

I can see the isolation, and debt, and stress over studies being a perfect storm for university students. they are being pressurised, and bribed with goodies such as laptops, to start uni this year as well.

All this and in a very low risk group for the virus as well. They rent the rooms, (at high cost) and now they will be policed on who enters them

and at an important stage in becoming independent as well. Makes me angry

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 09:35

Good for DH

110APiccadilly · 24/07/2020 09:43

There was a suggestion that students should be in bubbles all doing the same subject, in the same tutor groups, and in the same accommodation. Sounds like a good idea, right?

I've worked with students. It will take about 10 minutes for student A, going out with student B within the same group, to break up with/cheat on/have a massive row with student B. Possibly, in order to add even more fun, they'll have cheated on student B with student C, also in the same bubble.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 09:44

Yes i remember that bubble thing as well...

I'll stop now on the masks but thought this one might be a good look in Waitrose? www.amazon.co.uk/Spiral-Steam-Reaper-Multifunctional-Wraps/dp/B07N67Z86F/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=black+face+mask+lava&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1595580098&sr=8-2

Apparently it is Suitable for climbing, running, cycling, motorcycling , boating, skating, skiing, surfing or just raving!. Confused

I find the university situation horrifying.

My uni is encouraging very enthusiastically to get students to come into accommodation as normal (last year when it closed - the uni-owned halls refunded costs, but only 3 out of the halls used are uni-owned so lots got left in the lurch from private providers) but there are NO large-scale lectures at all for the entire year - they will all be online to watch at your time.

We normally have 1 day a week on placement, 3 days a week on campus and pretty much 9-5 sessions during that time (the odd hour of trapped time but not much). We're going down to - no placement for at least term 1 and "practical-based learning to fulfil the required bits for HCPC registration instead" (we need fucking clinical experience - not bad roleplay taking patient histories from your mate), some live-timetabled online sessions, a lot of pre-recorded lectures, and one day of 4 hours time a fortnight face-to-face.

That's a LOT of time for an undergrad to be stuck in a small halls room with fuck all going on around campus in terms of real-life. It saves me a fortune in commuting costs as I'll be paying £40 a month instead of £350 but still... not fun and I'm not particularly looking forward to it - I like my quiet little hidey hole study areas on campus with a coffee and wifi for the odd hour here and there.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 09:47

It can take a while to find friends at uni and think the bubble thing would be odd. It is good to meet others outside your subject etc. and being copped in with some person you didn't get on with could be tricky or even could bring about difficult situations.

There's a young lad around here taken to wearing one of these - I think he thinks it makes him look "cool" and "menacing"... DD2 thinks he looks blooming hilarious and just bursts into giggles at him having "a huge skeleton smile on his mask"

I don't think that was the image he wanted to project.

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 09:48

We had the "Green meanies' at uni halls, (sort of hall security guards / caretakers) you could sign people in and out, not after a certain time. Just for the first year, after that you had your own flat usually. So can see how it could be policed

DominaShantotto · 24/07/2020 09:48

As for the uni bubbles. About 12 of my course (cohort of 35) have signed up to house share next year and we are all rolling our eyes waiting for the first falling out and how much it's going to overspill into the bloody course sessions! (Well we were before lockdown)

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 09:51

So...they are basically saying students have to stay in their rooms and pay a fortune for them, so have no social life and no-one else there, and to sit and watch lectures online...

and the bars and sports centre will be socially distanced also...it's just grim...surely they can't do this

ButterMeCrumpets · 24/07/2020 09:59

The Uni stuff looks grim. It would have been ok for me as I went as a mature student and had my own home. But for students leaving home it just doesn't seem worth it both in terms of quality of learning plus what used to be the fun social part.

It all feels a bit like waiting until it all hits rock bottom before someone says enough is enough and life has to go on without all this fear.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 24/07/2020 10:08

Off out to the local stately home. Every time I've been since they reopened (a lot, record is five trips in a week) I've bought something from the cafe. Not today, I don't want to put on a mask.

MaudesMum · 24/07/2020 10:10

I've just popped my head above the parapet on a local facebook thread about masks - just pleasantly expressing my belief that this is being used as a smokescreen to cover up for failures on track & trace and doesn't solve problems in food processing plants/sweatshops etc. But, of course, confirming I will wear one. So far I've got 1 thumbs up, and 1 negative meme - so could be a lot worse!

I'm assuming/hoping that the ingenuity of students will mean that a lot of socialising takes place off-campus - no-one is going to be able to police a group of them sneaking off to the woods/park to drink cider in the evening, or going to a city centre pub or two.

Alwaysfrank · 24/07/2020 10:15

Hello - checking in to the new thread. As always reading everything but mostly lurking. That university piece in the news made me want to weep. I have friends whose children have really struggled to settle, socially, at university and goodness knows how many students will be tipped over the edge by what is outlined in that article. The sense of "but don't worry, there will be lots of online remote opportunities for fun" made my heart sink. What have we done to our young people.

dingit · 24/07/2020 10:19

The student thing is laughable. How are they going to police thousands of students? They are pretty much a law unto themselves at the best of times. The stories my dd tells me don't shock me anymore 😂

wanderings · 24/07/2020 10:20

A few posters have confirmed what I suspected would happen: cops making a token appearance, masks littering the ground, and teenagers up to no good. Bingo.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 24/07/2020 10:20

DH says there not down on applications this year for Uni - that was the big fear of upper management but everything is still being worked out and every uni is doing their own thing on top as well.

Coronavirus: Lost school time 'will hurt economy for 65 years' - study - this seems a tad OTT to me but apparently based on:

Evidence of long-term damage from reduced schooling included studies in Argentina, where year groups affected by prolonged strikes were found to have reduced average earnings into mid-life, of 1.9% for women and 3.2% for men.

Both DH and I come from working class families but my family and FIL were very pro education so even if we weren't in school we'd have been supported to learn at home and as adults to continue picking up skills and qualifications.

Alwaysfrank · 24/07/2020 10:20

@Orangeblossom78
Is that Swedish prison hall design thing an urban myth? It used to be said about my hall (1980s Exeter, now demolished). Or perhaps all halls built in the 60s/70s were built to the same design. My daughters hall in your lovely home town was actually much more prison like!

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 10:25

Hmm it seems unsure, it was always what we were told! Breeze blocks etc

Last week my family, kids and all, went to our local beauty spot to spot Comet Neowise. My husband is into star gazing and has been to this place often in the past to see meteor showers and other such, he says he's only ever met other star gazers there.
This time we stumbled into a teen party. You can imagine our confusion....a staid family, with little kids, dressed for sitting in the cold, walking right into a hippie party! We stood there blinking in confusion for a few seconds. Then a young girl handed me a glow stick and tried to lead my husband onto the woodland dance floor. I've never seen him that scared Grin
We beat a hasty retreat, wishing them well.

They all seemed like good kids, and weren't messing about. I popped there the next day and they'd obviously not littered the place.

To quote Jurassic Park, life will find a way.

Alwaysfrank · 24/07/2020 10:34

A quick google reveals that Swedish prison design has indeed been rumoured for many halls of a certain age!
But in all seriousness I despair that these sort of rules are being imposed and if my offspring were heading off for the first time I would definitely be very worried.
