I've had a late supermarket visit. Some staff were wearing masks in Aldi that hadn't been before. Not in Morrisons. Both very quiet on customers as it normally would be post-9pm. Most still maskless.

I might make late night a more regular habit. I've been going at 7pm anyway and haven't queued in yonks. If I'm going to struggle with face covering, I'd rather do it when there is less audience and social distancing is a total non-issue.

Went into town, I probably said on the last thread. Several new closures since I was last in the shopping centre 16th March. Centre is expecting full mask usage or to go to report to customer services. The wassocks are already in administration.

I'm curious to know how shopping flows will change. Will the masses suddenly flock out? Will there be a mini surge of latent shopping from people that haven't been out in 4 months. Or will the very anxious/ shielding stay in regardless and not compensate for the more confident who had been out and are now deterred?

I would take a bet that will be no surge because the anxious as you say will stay in anyway because if you read the media (or mumsnet) everyone is getting within the 2 metres anyway and it is literally sodom and gomorrah out there.

IAintentDead · 23/07/2020 23:27

I don't think the nervous will go out.

I was a bit nervous before my first supermarket visit after about 3 weeks. I haven't worried since.

I would really struggle if I hadn't been in a shop for 4 months - and I am not worried about Covid. The hooves and those that have been doing the same but more quietly will never go out confidently again. I don't think we have convinced them that Covid is just one more thing that is out there. I think they will now start to panic about flu and Noro etc.

NannyPhlegm · 23/07/2020 23:36

After the lockdown, even regular outings induced anxiety in me the first couple of times until I regained my confidence. When I was preparing to go to London to visit my mum, I was wracked with anxiety for 2 days! I worried about packing, about the journey, about parking etc etc etc. Things that I wouldn't have wasted a moment's thought on. I was worried sick about going into London, because it was (as @BellaintheWychElm says, it was Sodom and Gomorrah there)
And the worrying was pointless, because actually everyone is behaving sensibly! It's totally fine!

But I needed to break the anxiety cycle to see it for myself. I don't see the worried health-anxious doing that enough to revive the retail sector.

I reckon Amsterdam, I have faith in the good sense of the Dutch.

This is so true - I have been in the office, going to shops from the start - but even i had to face the local lidl the first time back then when it was all so horrible and weird and like you say was actually ok and has been since. I don't believe the scared wanting the masks will break that but it has made sure I will only do the necessary.

Checking into new thread... planning to flock to beach in the morning if weather is favourable....

PickAChew · 23/07/2020 23:46

@MaudesMum

The more I think about it, the way that masks have been introduced - long lead time allowing for lots of debate, sudden last-minute clarification of rules leading to a lot more debate and confusion - is a classic dead cat strategy, designed to take our attention away from something else. The problem with this government, is there are so many things that could be. It could be failure of track & trace (which would be a lot more use than compulsory face coverings at this stage of the game). It could be that they're heading towards a no-deal Brexit. It could be the steps taken towards the sell-off of the NHS. Or maybe I'm just getting paranoid??
Aye. No one is paying attention to the fact that we're stumbling into a no deal brexit, after all.
BogRollBOGOF · 23/07/2020 23:50

I kept going out throughout.
Normally I'm walking all over in and out, so switching to a sedentary lifestyle was a bit of a shock to the system. (My legs are so going to ache with umpteen school runs a day in September, but it will be good for me). I've unravelled since late May, mainly due to my body needing ironing out at the osteopath.
Because DS1 is a natural for anxiety and overthinking, again it was a thing that the DCs went out every day.
I kept up the supermarket shopping in person (such an exciting escape)
I've gradually phased in extra things as they've become avaliable. DS1 is fine about getting out so I'm calling that a success.

It has taken more psycing up to get out some weeks but that's just resisting lethargy rather than anxiety. I'm not great with crowds anyway so I'm happy to do stuff off peak and haven't had any unnerving moments.

DS2 had an end of year get together with many in his class at the park. It was wonderful to watch a mob of 7yos playing joyfully together. An ice cream van was arranged too, and the teacher/ TA team came over to say hello for the first time in 4+ months for many. DS2 has been in a much nicer mood this evening than he's been all week.

justasking111 · 23/07/2020 23:50

For a time our big Tesco was awful, long queues one way system, people jumpy. I used our little co-op which although one way was friendly. Now Tesco is pretty much back to normal I can usually get in within five minutes.

Just checked out Cheshire Oaks outlet, still most of the eateries are takeaways, well sorry but I do not want to stand in the street and eat. They are still advertising Cafe Rouge and Carluccios albeit temporarily closed hah... I shall not be going back there until I get a decent lunch. Especially as it seems to be mask central.

Checking in on DM dementor mask day Grin

110APiccadilly · 24/07/2020 06:01

We started lockdown with DH doing all the shopping because I was pregnant and at the time there were reports that Covid caused miscarriage - we weren't too worried but we thought better safe than sorry. When they first eased lockdown a bit we realised I needed to start going to the shops (and reports of miscarriage had been debunked by then - it turns out before 28 weeks pregnancy adds no risk at all) because I needed for my own sanity and well being not to be a complete hermit!

ButterMeCrumpets · 24/07/2020 06:16

Museums are excluded from face covering but I have just looked on the website of one we were going to visit on holiday later in the year and they are saying visitors must wear them. Just said to DH that we will give that a miss instead and do more things outside.

I am thinking the masks thing might actually be positive for us personally as it will save us a lot of money. Even just the food delivery and not popping out for last minute top ups means we aren't wasting food and not buying extra treats.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 24/07/2020 06:45

I'm nipping to our local outlet at lunch as I need to get a birthday gift....

Its been packed since reopening. Should be heaving today with all these people who feel safe to go out now everyone is in masks going out and shopping too......

SeaOtterFluff · 24/07/2020 07:17

I hope other shops follow suit with Sainsbury's and Costa, and say publicly that they will not challenge people without masks. I've had to unfollow several local businesses on FB as they have said "no mask, no entry". I have no reason for not wearing a mask but I won't be judging anyone who isn't wearing one - I have no idea what's going on in their private life.

It's back to making people wear a special armband because they belong to a particular part of society... I feel very uncomfortable with the whole concept of lanyards and badges from customer services...

TheOrchidKiller · 24/07/2020 07:47

@HelenaDove
The comments about the lady collapsing in the street showed the usual compassion - "she might have had underlying health conditions, it can't have been the mask". That might be true, but there's no, "oh no, was she ok?" At least the photo shows people helping out.

I don't believe that anyone who is scared now will start flocking to the shops because of masks.

Same people who tell me they would feel happier if masks were compulsory everywhere all the time would have thought nothing of going to a crowded bar last winter, maskless, where they could've caught anything like norovirus, which could be fatal in some circumstances, but as it's "just D&V" no one was worried then. Throwing up & having the shits isn't as newsworthy & doesn't have a media presence.

Right you lot, I'm off to work. Keep your collective blood pressures healthy & don't engage with the dementors.

MagdaS · 24/07/2020 07:54

Checking in to the new thread.

I’ve not posted for a while - I’ve been getting out and about more, including the actual office and seeing my family for the first time since February, but have been lurking along in quiet moments.

This remains, by far, the sanest place on the internet.

My first haircut this morning since 29 February. I don’t half need it! I also need to grovel to my hairdresser to sort out my purple streaks properly - but a separate murderous appointment is needed for that.

okiedokieme · 24/07/2020 08:00

I travelled across the country yesterday by train - mask wearing increased the further sw I went despite the infection rate decreasing the further sw I went (according to the Zoe app). I wonder? The youngsters in particular are refusing to wear them on trains despite the staff giving free ones out - they take them off as soon as the guard moves away. I'm annoyed because masks are so uncomfortable but I wore one!

I think to some extent mask wearing is health theatre - in the same way that a lot of airport security is security theatre. It may not make you safer, but it makes you feel safer. Because we all like to think that Something Is Being Done.

Piccadilly yes there is psychological stuff about this I have read

Orangeblossom78 · 24/07/2020 08:13

As well as 'feeling safe' also "those suffering from social phobia or anxiety, one of the commonest fears, may welcome wearing face masks precisely because they would prefer to veil their emotional state from the outside world all the time. They suffer from the dread that others are noticing they are blushing, or anxious, making negative judgments about them a result"

This is interesting on the topic

Ibake visors look after number 1 only you say? 😁

This performance caring seems to have ramped up about 15 notches since Feb. It’s fucking nauseating. You’ve got to be a bit of a wally to think anyone’s buying it. Pssst! Everyone knows you’re a cunt - and have been - since 1985. Wear the mask if you want sunshine, but you’re still a horrible person.
