@iamapixie

Ibake I totally agree. And frankly, either it is extremely contagious as claimed, in which case many of us out and about in big cities before lockdown will have had it, or it isn't. And I really can't help but think that the constant blighting on about how herd immunity is impossible and how no one is immune for more than a few weeks is just fear mongering nonsense. Obviously on any other thread I would be asked whether I'm an expert in viruses and in case we're invaded I'll say right now that no, I'm not, but seriously, the whole 'you can catch it in the miasma and we'll all DIE in a second wave' at the same time as claiming that hardly anyone has actually had it yet and even if they have they can't possibly be immune is total nonsense. Ah that feels better.
I totally agree too.

The theory about the big spike being not exactly the first wave either has some validity to me. No there wasn't a lot of extra deaths at that time but if the majority of infections at that point were young people (students mixing with chinese students and people returning from ski trips and their friends) then there wouldn't have been many excess deaths. Even when these people mixed with their friends and parents it is still a predominantly young demographic. Only then would it start getting to the care homes and other elderly. I know many young people love their elderly relatives but I suspect there aren't huge numbers that spend long periods of time with them on a regular basis/do personal care.

Only 2 per 100 death are under 50. And that is with allowing for comorbidities. 50 is still young so I'm not saying that doesn't matter - just that it could have been circulating in younger people before it really took off.

Checking in after lovely week away... change of scene was great although we definitely did less shopping than we would usually as none of us keen on browsing in masks..... plenty takeaways though so it was a bit of a shock to the system getting back to cooking dinner last night...

PinkFondantFancy · 26/07/2020 17:00

Why is there no like page on this forum yet? I need one for the dogs Grin

PinkFondantFancy · 26/07/2020 17:03

I've had a lovely weekend so far. Favourite restaurant yesterday, church this morning (bit odd but still better than nothing at all and good to see real life people), cafe for coffee after. Snatching back little bits of normality.

Booked a holiday for a couple of weeks time because I'm SELFISH and an all round horrible person. Keeping everything crossed I can go. A week away will be the reset/recharge I need to get through autumn/winter which I tend to struggle with a bit anyway

Willow2017 · 26/07/2020 17:03

Just catching up after work.
Phew you lot have been busy.

Re the holidays its a shit thing to do to people and they should be held accountable and pay the money back. Taking money off people knowing what was coming is bloody fraud in my book. Gov just sat back and let them it's a disgrace. And the crap on here about it is back to square one vile gleeful wallowing in self righteousness over all those people who deserved to lose thier holidays.

Loki bless your cotton socks you are amazing. BUT give yourself a breather and take a bit of time out. If you burn out you will be no good to you or your family never mind all those kids you are protecting. You cant do everything yourself like that long term.

Post on Us4Them Scotland explaining the figures and numbers are dropping at a rate of knots every week. Yet still they are making excuses in some places re schools going back and dementoring all over the place. (Noticed on another thread someone scaremongering about Scottish figures rising and how its a bad thing, potentially serious yadda yadda oh shut up!)

Heartily sick and tired of all the saints and martyrs belittling everyone else. Bloody 'ventilator masks' are still cropping up as justification to be goady. If you are ventilated you don't wear a bloody mask you idiots! And considering the actual amount of people still in icu is negligible now its hardly a good argument.

As you can tell I am pissed off today. Annoyed at work being a pia, disorganised, short staffed joke and Pissed off that most of Mn is a no go area now when i used to enjoy it for all sorts of topics. The stazis may be facing more opposition but they are still there and are even more open about thier apparent hatred of everyone else and thier ignorant blanket statements on every thing from covid to disabled people to every other country in the world being better at everything than us. How the hell do they know every area in every country and what people are doing? Don't they engage thier brains before letting thier belly rumble out nonsense?

countrygirl99 · 26/07/2020 17:03

Looking at booking a weekend in Whitby in September if we can coordinate leave, dog care etc. I know there isn't much availability in the leave diary and DS1, who would look after the dogs, has a few days away booked but fingers crossed. Any tips?

Willow2017 · 26/07/2020 17:03

Oooh sorry that was ranty!😲

Ibake · 26/07/2020 17:04

@ineedaholidaynow they were trying to get somewhere with saliva tests. Would make a big difference to quick and easy mass testing. Schools, factories, offices would all be perfect.

@IAintentDead your comments re first wave and young students does make a lot of sense. Especially if it does end up being definitely traced to pre Xmas as all those young people will have seen their grandparents.

Apart from a very small select number of RL friends, here is where I feel safe to say 'so what' to cases going up as long as the death rate doesn't soar exponentially too. I'd rather that was now before flu season too.

Why oh why oh why are we the only people on MN who think that all deaths matter and that now it would appear that the scales have tipped and covid is no longer the greatest threat to our health out there so we should crack on and treat all diseases equally. It's not ok to only protect one kind of vulnerable and ignore all the others.

PinkFondantFancy · 26/07/2020 17:04

@GrrrrrrArghhhhh glad you had a brill week away! Man I love a takeaway....

InsaneInTheViralMembrane · 26/07/2020 17:10

I too have had a queen related parenting fail.

Child one came home with his song for the nativity play.

“We will we will rock you”.

Fair enough. Not my curriculum, so I duly taught him the lyrics.

Imagine my surprise to learn it was ACTUALLY something along the lines of “we will rock you baby Jesus “. 😳😂

People who are laughing at us are not laughing for the reasons the dementors think. My family in Greece has said that a lot of the population there find it hilarious that we disinfect our shopping and quarantine our post. They think its ridiculous

People who are laughing at us are not laughing for the reasons the dementors think

I had to call this out on one of the many mask threads. My Italian relatives arent bemused for the reason that they like to think.
My relatives in Molise are absolutely disgusted that here we were told to make our own face masks out of socks and T shirts.

In Italy they have been handing them out free outside pharmacies.

One of the "dementors" on a thread painted herself into a corner

She kept reiterating it was all about saving lives then when i pointed out what they have been doing in Italy. she replied.
"You think people should get them for free"

Her own mask slipped there!!!

If you could have a Corona Safe nightclub of social distancing (no dodging sweaty bodies or leching pervs) and music turned down to levels that don't make your head explode, I'd be up for that Envy

BogRollBOGOF · 26/07/2020 17:33

Why do I keep hitting Envy instead of Grin???

(Other than the fact that it's directly underneath and my screen is smashed up.

Bollss · 26/07/2020 17:33
@InsaneInTheViralMembrane that's awful.

DH was on a motorbike many years ago as his workplace was very poorly served by public transport and we had young kids so needed to be near services in nearest town.

He was badly hurt and nearly killed because another driver got impatient did something stupid. Police weren't interested in prosecuting as it was a "bad junction" despite us having witnesses appalled by the drivers behavior and attitude.

We had nearly a year of costs and disruptions and stress and he's left with a bad scar and possibly needing surgey as he ages. We did get an insurance payout from other driver insurer but wasn't as much as you'd think and he got some extra physiotherapy paid for a well.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone but no-one seems to be thinking more young people could die on the roads because of the attitude to public transport currently.
We went to the forbidden corner today. Took us an hour and 40 to get there. 4 hours to get home because a biker got killed on the route out. We were minutes away from having been involved.

My heart absolutely sank when I saw two air ambulances land. It's a scarily common occurrence. Admittedly I have no idea who is at fault here because it's a bendy road where pretty much everyone, bikers included, flaws it. I'm so so sad for everyone involved.

incognitomum · 26/07/2020 17:50

@TrustTheGeneGenie I haven't been to the Forbidden corner for years. It's an amazing place isn't it. Hard not to get lost though.

I think they call them Tea Dances Grin
Mascotte · 26/07/2020 17:52

Mascotte · 26/07/2020 17:53

😆to tea dances

incognitomum · 26/07/2020 17:54

Wine would have been better Mascotte 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 26/07/2020 17:56

Tea Dance featuring moshing to Smells Like Teen Spirit. Sounds awesome Grin

Jourdain11 · 26/07/2020 18:00

I worked on the cloakroom at Tea Dances when I was a student, they were properly awesome! The Tea Dancers really knew how to dress to impress, too!

TheOrchidKiller · 26/07/2020 18:08

@InsaneInTheViralMembrane Grin at We Will Rock You!

As for tea dances, how about those dances they had in Georgian times, where no one touched anyone & the ladies could hide behind fans? They'd be popular today amongst certain circles.

Just spotted DH's mask (he only has the one) on the floor in the hall, resting against the sole of his shoe, all ready for his next shopping trip, which is where he dropped it after his last shopping trip.

Do I (a) decontaminate the mask in case it's got covid on it?
(b) decontaminate the mask, & the shoe which might have caught covid off the mask?
(c) decontaminate the mask, the shoe, the carpet, & just to be on the safe side, the cat?
(d) decide life's too short & put the kettle on?

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 26/07/2020 18:17

@TheOrchidKiller (e) burn the house down. It’s the safest way

@Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy
Ooh, I hadn't thought of that!

He's a creature of habit & has lots of routines & can be oblivious to certain things going on around him. Masks is going to take a while to sink in as it's not part of his routine.

I'm sure there are others like DH, which makes me feel even more that all these measures aren't that effective.

Not worried about him catching it- I think he had mild symptoms in early February anyway.
