Songs that make you sob

Sorry, I know this topic has been done before but...
Recently watched The Falling, and Florence Pugh sings Voyage To The Moon- it's only a brief moment, but I had never heard the song before and I cannot stop thinking about it. I've listened to Donovan and the Mary Hopkin version and I'm sobbing! Absolutely bawling my eyes out! It is such a sad sweet melancholy song. It's making me think of the DCs as babies and how little DD (4) is growing so big now...

Are there any songs that have given you the same reaction? I can't stop listening and crying!

Disclaimer- this may be a result of lockdown hysteriaGrin

The Parting Glass.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 15/07/2020 09:36

@turnthebiglightoff It’s such a lovely song, DS is nearly 14 now but it still makes me sob!

wewillmeetagain · 15/07/2020 09:40

Jealous of the angels by donna taggart, reminds me of my grandad.

thesunwillout · 15/07/2020 09:58

Those of you who like Nick Cave, have you heard Brompton Oratory.
It's so simple and powerful.

I haven't been able to listen to his last album, I fear I'll never get over it!

The one before, especially when I saw him live, well it was beautiful.

WheresMyMilk · 15/07/2020 10:40

Another vote for Jealous by Labrinth

@mynameisigglepiggle In the Bleak Midwinter makes me emotional too! I just find it incredibly atmospheric.
On the subject of hymns, Jerusalem gets me every time.

And I love On My Own from Les Mis. Perfect encapsulation of unrequited love.

mrswhiplington · 15/07/2020 10:43

Oh Danny Boy. It was played at my friends father's funeral, he was called Danny and the loveliest man. I can't hear it now without welling up.

2020Rainbow · 15/07/2020 10:51

A thousand years - the lyrics really get me.

Also Emile Sande ft Labirinyth 'Your beautiful'.
It reminds of when my Dad died. We were coming from the hospital in a cab and this song was playing on the radio. My brother and I were just crying loads knowing our lives had completely changed.

Dance with my Father

Why the hell would anyone write a song that, what, 25%?, of the adult population (who’ve lost their father) find very upsetting.

Makes me cry and rage in equal measure.

risefromyourgrave · 15/07/2020 11:17

Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine is just a beautiful song and makes me sob.
Also Allegri’s Miserere Mei, Deus is just so perfect and brings a tear to my eye every time.

rosegoldwatcher · 15/07/2020 11:20

My adult son cries like a baby if ever he hears Cat Stevens' Father and Son. (NB he has a very good relationship with his dad, unlike the son in the song.)

My 'howl along' is Cara Dillon's The Leaving Song. Never fails! (It isn't well known, so will put up a link here.)

Have just listened to it and was balling my eyes out. Love it though.
rosegoldwatcher · 15/07/2020 11:24

bawling not balling, obvs!

UncertainFuture · 15/07/2020 11:51

Regina SpEktor - Laughing With and Lukas Graham - 7 years

@TrickOrRuddyTreat

Another vote for fix you by coldplay. Not at first but since I heard the story behind him writing it I've been unable to listen without doing big ugly tears.

Also, You Have Been Loved and I Can't Make You Love Me by George Michael. More so since he passed.

Love Of My Life by Queen, but only Brian May's live version. He sings it at shows for Freddie and if you don't cry at it you are a heartless monster. Similarly Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac, never paid it much heed until they did it on the Say You Will Tour and the pain in her voice when she sang it live just undid me. Ditto David Gray doing This Years Love or Sail Away.

Most recently randomly cried at Wet Sand by RHCP despite having heard it hundreds of times. Not sure what that's about!

So glad you mentioned the Brian May Love of My Life!

I saw that tour I think 7 times and every time Brian reaching out to the video Freddie just broke me! Just so touching and the whole audience singing along brings the whole room together.

Also Adam Lambert singing Who Wants to Live Forever at the Isle of Wight Festival for the victims of the Orlando shooting. You could tell he was singing completely from the heart yet it was technically flawless and he captivated the entire audience. I watch the Youtube video on repeat.

Nat6999 · 15/07/2020 12:27

Hero by Enrique Iglesias, my late partner used to sing it to me & it was played at his funeral.

Hello Again by Neil Diamond from The Jazz Singer, my late partner loved the film & since he died I can't bear to watch it because it brings back too many memories.

Matchstalk men & Matchstalk cats & dogs, Brian & Michael. My dad bought this for me when my mum was in hospital once when I was a kid, I was missing my mum so much & he bought it to cheer me up, I heard it on YouTube recently, my dad passed away last year & it breaks my heart every time I hear it.

Living years Mike & the mechanics, the line " I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away" breaks me every time I hear it, we were trying to get through the rush hour traffic to get to the hospital when we arrived my dad had passed away before we got there.

I totally agree about everyone joining in user1471548941, it makes the hairs on your neck stand on end. I was surrounded by big tough-looking blokes bawling their eyes out when I saw them do it live Grin

okeypoke · 15/07/2020 12:39

Leave Out All the Rest -Linkin Park (and most of LP tbh especially since Chester's suicide

Hurt - Johnny Cash version

I Love the World by New Model Army

Battle of the Beanfield by Levellers

Who wants to live forever by Queen

Missing by Everything but the girl

ELW85 · 15/07/2020 12:43

Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy version
I Hope You Dance - LeAnn Womack
Everything - Ben Howard; this is more about loss for me. The first two get me when I think about DS and how one day he’ll be grown and I might not be here. A bit morbid but lockdown does funny things to you!

Pet8 · 15/07/2020 13:25

Linger - the cranberries

Nothing compares to you - Sinead O'Connor

History and Bitter Sweet symphony -
The Verve

Ordinary world - duran duran

She will be loved* - Maroon 5

Hide your love away - The Beatles

Travellers Tune - Ocean Colour Scene

Everybody hurts - REM

  • my sister used to weep at this song. She took her life a few years ago and I fall apart when I hear it now.
Pet8 · 15/07/2020 13:26

Bold fail. Asterisk meant to be next to maroon 5 song Confused

ELW85 · 15/07/2020 13:40

@Pet8 - my heart goes out to you. My friend took his life and we always used to listen to Bon Iver together, so I lose it when any of the ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ album comes on.

Avebury · 15/07/2020 22:55

Green Day - Time of your life
