I used to know a yellow Labrador called Briggs. Admittedly, that was the name on the tag on his collar so was most likely the name of his family. But it seemed to suit him ( as far as I was concerned) so he was always Briggs to me, whatever his actual name may have been. If I ever have a male yellow Labrador, he will be called Briggs.

We had a couple of rescue guinea pigs called Rodney and Keith.

They we like a couple of grumpy old men so their names suited them perfectly

My grandmother had a dog called King Henry V. And she'd call him by his full title at all times.

I don't think she was particularly royalist or fond of King Henry V at all.

@lockdownbreakdown

My cat is called Brenda. Had another called Keith. Love human names on animals
I also love it when animals have human names. I too have a friend whose dog is named Gary. I kept wanting to call him “Gerald” as a formal name.

This is a bit outing but I don’t care because I love the name. One of my friends and former roommates has an all grey fluffy cat named Mr. Mildew. Because he’s grey, like mildew. My friend also loved alliteration.

The great part is that whenever he was sitting in the vet’s office, the admin would call the animals’ pet names and owners’ last names. So in my friend’s case, the vet assistant would shout, “Mr. Mildew Jennings. Is Mr. Mildew Jennings here?” 😂

Love Eartha Kitt and Bertie Wooster! We had two gerbils called Itchy and Scratchy, and hamsters call Buffy and Angel.

WildRosie · 04/07/2020 14:19

Briggs sounds relatively normal and uninteresting compared to many of the names on here. There was another, older Labrador that was part of the same household. I decided she was probably Briggs' mother so she became Mrs. Briggs.

I had a horse called "Flop". My riding instructor bred her for herself but she didn't grow big enough. When the time came to register her, my instructor was away so her brother handled the paperwork. My horses sire (dad) was names "Branigan's Pride" so he registered my horse as "Flanigan's Flop". We eventually changed her registered name, but Flop stuck 😀

Twizbe · 04/07/2020 14:22

I had a budgie called Biggles. We got him just after he fledged and he wasn't the best at flying.

@UncleShady

I knew a massive bruiser of a tomcat with scarred ears called .... Lucy. Wrongly sexed kitten, the owners said he only answered to Lucy and so didn't change his name.
Lucifer?

johnstownflood · 04/07/2020 14:37

We had a dcat when our DS's were young and we let them choose the name, big mistake. She was Fifa international soccer 1993 after their favourite game. Fortunately that mouthful was too much for them after a while and she became Fifi.

CassiopeaAndromeda · 04/07/2020 14:37

Had an aunt back in the 70s who called her Westie Terrier Gary. Other names I've encountered over the years Ceefer (C for Cat), a huge lop eared rabbit called The General Belgrano and a black lab called Dave. There was another MN post a few days ago about animal names and I think there was a sausage dog called Darren Grin

@haverhill

Chairman Meow Charlie Mouse (a cat) Bentley (guinea pig)
I know the word mao means cat in Cantonese so maybe he is/was Chairman Cat for real 😁

My pet bamboo shrimps were called Squidee and Squarenade, but they died a while back. Now I only have a lot of unnamed cherry shrimp.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/07/2020 14:44

We had 8 guinea-pigs over 8 years ,,,,the most noteable one (and had to be my DD favourite) was "Bert" .

Bert was without doubt as thick as mince but lovely with it .

We re-name all our animals , even if we know their original names .
They have a new name for their new life .

Gingaaarghpussy · 04/07/2020 14:48

Clevererthanyou · 04/07/2020 14:49

A fella was standing outside Pets At Home once and looked to his side a bit confused, he called over his shoulder “Come on now Mr Ernie, let’s go home” and out waddled a bulldog wearing a Union Jack dribble bandana 🥰🥰 I also met two absolutely fucking mahoosive New Foundlands called Diva and Jaffa, I have never been so in love in my life.

BertiesLanding · 04/07/2020 14:49
