Sorry it’s a bit of a lame title.

@Mrsfrumble
I always argue that 14 million people die each year as a result of poverty but no one gives a shit about them because you can't sneeze "poor" onto someone.

KaronAVyrus · 04/07/2020 10:18

Half a million children die from diarrhoea every year but no one seems to have given a toss about this devastating statistic.
I’m officially out of patience with the dementors.

FizzFan · 04/07/2020 10:21

Yep and malaria as well despite it being both preventable and curable. Fear about CV being the worst thing to possibly happen is a truly privileged perspective.

People who think they are immune from "poor" don't seem to be keen to protect people vulnerable to it.

Strange Hmm

BTW Loki, I know you and SpnBaby both work with vulnerable children in your jobs and I often think about people like you working through some of the worst effects of lockdown and am so grateful for you. ❤

bookworm14 · 04/07/2020 10:22

The Pepys quote is fake.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/07/2020 10:22

Same here @KaronAVyrus
That's why I tend to respond to my poverty stat.

I always used to find a witty retort but now I just want to eye roll and tell them to fuck off.

You dont want to go to the pub?
You don't want your haircut?
You dont want your kids at school?
You don't want to go on holiday?
Fucking fine by me then Felicia, more room for me.

Mascotte · 04/07/2020 10:22

@HairyFloppins I love that, particularly being grateful that loads of other people are dead but not me!! Lovely

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/07/2020 10:24

Thank you @Nihiloxica that really means a lot. As mostly on here the needs of young people and the effects on their mental health are dismissed as them being "snowflakes".
Which is ironic coming from a group of people who want to lock themselves up at home to avoid catching a virus.

Pillocks

BarkandCheese · 04/07/2020 10:26

Around 8 million annually die from smoking related diseases globally, around 80, 000 in the UK.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 10:27

Morning all.

Please can I be added to the roll call, I'm in Somerset.

We have good news/bad news here.

Good news...after months of OH being unemployed (since February), after being bullied out of his job, and being very pessimistic about ever finding another due to his epilepsy, he's got himself a temporary 6 month job, with a strong chance of it becoming permanent after Christmas.

Bad news...it's at a high end dessert factory and he will be eligible for discounted sales....my lockdown lard is doomed to stay. Grin

This is so true.

@trappedsincesundaymorn

Just let us know if you need any help avoiding discounted desserts. You could always donate them to me.

That’s fab! I can see why it’s a double edged sword though, I’ve had to ban my DH from any more cake baking for the foreseeable.
FizzFan · 04/07/2020 10:31

I took my 14 year old out yesterday evening to meet a couple of friends (outside). He was so excited, you’d have thought he was getting to go to Disneyland from his reaction. Sadly the rain is back today so all kyboshed again

LivinLaVidaLoki · 04/07/2020 10:31

Also can I just leave this here.

All these posts about Drayton Manor and Wickstead Parks brought back memories. When I went to them on Sunday School trips in the 50s and 60s the phrase theme park hadn't been invented. We were all piled in charabancs and had a marvellous time, big picnic teas and then back on the coach home, singing "Ten Green Bottles" and "one man went to Mow". We knew how to live!

I also remember the polio epidemic in the 50s as we had some work done in the house and the builder went down with it the following week. I can't remember there being a particular fuss about it - these things happened.

My daughter, whilst not a dementor, is anxious about us (over 70s, I am overweight, DH has heart issues), so we're careful, although my gut reaction is to just get on with life.

TheGreatWave · 04/07/2020 10:36

Well done Mr Trapped.

HesterShaw1 · 04/07/2020 10:37

@LivinLaVidaLoki

Also, plastic masks and gloves, disposable plastic cups and stuff in pubs and restaurants and single use menus...

Does this mean we have stopped caring about plastic pollution now?

Germany has banned all that from next year. Shows they're thinking ahead, not lurching from day to day in the current shit storm. Like actual bloody governments are supposed to do.
trappedsincesundaymorn · 04/07/2020 10:37

Aww thanks all. Yep it's a relief it's been a testing few months, but we've both got a new start although it will be the first time we've not worked in the same place for many a long year. The other downside is he hasn't got a car at the moment (he can drive as it's been over a year since his last seizure, but his old car failed the MOT spectacularly last year so he got rid)., so I've got to get him to work for a 7am start. Lockdown lard and bags under my eyes the size of a suitcase is going to be my look from now on.

Bollss · 04/07/2020 10:38

That's fab trapped feel free to send any spare desserts to me Grin I'm sure I can help out haha!

It's weird the whole poor people dying doesn't matter thing. We watched bohemian rhapsody and it shows live aid at the end. We were both bewildered at seeing a) that amount of people together and b) people actually wanting to raise money for poor people. It seemed so far removed from our actual reality because obviously, crowds, and because nobody cares about poor people now. Starving children? Who gives a shit at least they don't have COVID!!

It made me really sad actually.

Have people ever really cared? Or do they just care about themselves much more and because now they have an actual real concern their other "concerns" have taken a back seat?

Like I know you can't save everyone, obviously. But, living with covid, is such a small risk compared to some people's every day lives.

HesterShaw1 · 04/07/2020 10:38

Good news on MrTrapped's job!

The dessert thing is a cruel test of your willpower!
