Can positive pregnancy tests be false?

My last period was 10 March, (I made a thread about if it is to do with being overweight) went for my smear on weds and mentioned this when she was asking the usual questions.
She suggested I POAS and I did just because but not for one minute thinking it would be positive but it was
I was kind of shocked into just leaving but since I've been panicking reading things about what can cause a false positive.

Is it possible for a false positive to just be a false positive. Even when it's a Dr's test?

False positives are extremely rare from what I understand. That must have been a massive shock to you Thanks

Clearblue website is informative

I didn't put in my first post sorry, I haven't had sec on about 6 months, and I'm def not 6mo pg
I can't be pregnant. And even if something had happened (fooling around whilst drunk for eg, although I'm 100% sure no sex,) dh has had the snip so the chances are like nil

Sorry if this isnt the news you want, but a false positive is incredibly rare. What but what does POAS mean? (I've googled and power of attorney comes up Confused). Do you mean you have PCOS? Is it normal that you've not had a period for nearly 4mths??? Is this the 1st preg test you've done in all that time??

Are they referring you for a scan to check how far along you are? do you have some support?

You said in this thread that your husband had a vasectomy, how long ago?

POAS= pee on a stick - pregnancy test
Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 18:41

Poas is pee on a stick.

He had a vasectomy about 4 years ago

whiplashy · 28/06/2020 18:54

I thought there couldn’t be a false positive but I might be wrong

Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 18:59

I just can't see how. We haven't had sex and even if we had, dh has had a vasectomy.

The nurse that did my smear test gave me number to ring for midwife team but it just seems ridiculous

It is rare but can happen. Some illnesses can cause it I believe. I'd book a gp appointment even if it is just a phone consultation and see what they say. They might book you an ultrasound to see if they can see anything.

Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 19:02

Thanks I'm going to ring them in the morning I think

BroodyBridget · 28/06/2020 19:13

Did your DH go for the follow-up check after his vasectomy OP? To make sure there were no sperm in his sample.

Littlebyerockerboo · 28/06/2020 19:14

You got a positive?

.....youre pregnant, op.

Take another test? Put a picture on here. Are you sure not an evap?

Honeydukesmum · 28/06/2020 19:22

I believe a false positive can be due to start of menopause - any other symptoms?

IrishCream123 · 28/06/2020 19:26

Did you husband to the seamen tests after his vasectomy? Did he get the all clear?
Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 19:31

Yep husband took the Semen sample which was clear.

I didn't personally take the test so can't post a pic, the nurse did it at the doctors when I went for my smear test

OP posts:
employeewoes · 28/06/2020 19:33

Do another test.

Did you see the results? If not, it could be the nurse was mistaken.

BertieBotts · 28/06/2020 19:34

She hasn't had sex in 6 months so surely the vasectomy is irrelevant!

I would push for investigation, sounds not right whatever it is. There was another MNer who found out she was 31 weeks pregnant the other day though!

Paranoidmarvin · 28/06/2020 19:38

I once went to have a test at Tesco. And this was year ago when they did them there. I was 17. I was told it was positive. Spend the rest of the day at the doctors trying to figure out what to do. Worst day of my life.

The doctor said to me a while later let’s just make double sure and the test was negative.

I went back to Tesco and shouted and screamed. And they re checked it and he said I was told positive when it was really negative.

Was an awful experience. Made worse by the fact that when I went home my mum asked me to go to Tesco with her to the same one. I hid when I went past the pharmacy.

I would pee in a cup in the morning. Go get one straight away and do your own.

Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 19:43

Thanks I'll do one myself tomorrow and ring the drs if positive. I didn't see the one at the drs

OP posts:
Littlebyerockerboo · 28/06/2020 19:44

oh my gosh, in that case down to asda or wherever closest you go, and take an at home test... they're very reliable and chances of a false positive aren't likely at all.
Post results on here if you're still unsure.

Littlebyerockerboo · 28/06/2020 19:46

Op, did you not discuss with the nurse that its not possible? Ask to see the test? Ask for a repeat? What did the nurse say to you? Surely all these things would be questions you would ask upon getting the results?

captainprincess · 28/06/2020 19:49

I mean, definitely take another test but as another poster said they are certain illnesses that make a pregnancy test positive so if it still is please book a GP appointment.

Himbeerrot · 28/06/2020 19:51

I almost found it funny (I know that's ridiculous) she just told me to ring the number she gave me. I didn't tell her I hadn't had sex, I don't know why I kind of just was convinced I must be wrong. I don't know

I definitely am not heavily pregnant though. I've got 4 kids and would definitely know.

Your husband had 2 clear seamen tests? As when my husband had his ... first seamen analysts -was clear....2nd test there were sperm found...test 3 + 4 clear. Our doctor told us not to stop contraceptives until we had 2 clear tests back to back.
