Can positive pregnancy tests be false?

My last period was 10 March, (I made a thread about if it is to do with being overweight) went for my smear on weds and mentioned this when she was asking the usual questions.
She suggested I POAS and I did just because but not for one minute thinking it would be positive but it was
I was kind of shocked into just leaving but since I've been panicking reading things about what can cause a false positive.

Is it possible for a false positive to just be a false positive. Even when it's a Dr's test?

I know he definitely had one. I can't really remember but I'm sure he must have had 2 clear or we would have been worrying about it

Did my own test which was positive today, rang the number drs gave me and they gave me number to ring to arrange ultrasound. So that's next week. I'm still convinced there must be a more sinister reason as it can't be possible surely unless I'm at least 6mo which I'm def not

Ooh that's really strange.

Hope you get to the bottom of it. Let us know how you get on

I'm going to book private one I think in mean time. I know they won't be able to rule out other causes but at least I'll know for sure there's no baby in there

I’m sorry you have no answers yet! It’s baffling!

Sexnotgender · 29/06/2020 22:07

A false positive is very rare. 2 would be rarer. Good luck with your ultrasound!

macaroniandpizza · 29/06/2020 22:09

Wow op what a hoohah for you 🙈 hope you and dh are holding up okay what a shock to get

Megan2018 · 29/06/2020 22:20

I hope you get to the bottom of it @Himbeerrot

Just to say though that my colleague had similar experience and she discovered she was very pregnant despite having many previous children! Once she knew she was pregnant she “popped” overnight and felt pregnant but before that because there was no thought she could be she didn’t! Baby arrived 11 weeks later.

She was totally genuine, we were all astonished when she told us! Much of what we experience in pregnancy is felt because we know we are if that makes sense. Same with TTC-people convince themselves they have all sorts of early symptoms but a lot is just wishful thinking from being overly tuned in. You can be equally tuned out too.

It must be a massive shock to be even processing this though! Good luck

Littlebyerockerboo · 29/06/2020 23:46

Oh gosh, op - 2 positives are very very unlikely to be anything other than a pregnancy.
Please make sure you update us.
What a shock.

IAmReportingYouForBBQing · 29/06/2020 23:51

Good luck op, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Whatever it is that you want.

Vascectomies can fail. They can grow together. Are you also sure that your DH had 2 clear tests?

Your health condition could have an impact on your hcg levels which is what the pregnancy tests is there to detect. Also having blood or protein in your wee can alter the results. It is very possible to have a false positive test. Get an ultrasound asap to set your mind at ease.

AskingforaBaskin · 30/06/2020 08:23

Good luck. I hope there is a good reason for this.

Himbeerrot · 30/06/2020 09:33

Good luck!!! Xxx

Anniissa · 30/06/2020 10:46

I’ve had issues with high levels of protein in urine before and was told by the doctor that this would likely give false positive on any pregnancy tests so it is possible that there could be a medical reason leading to false positive tests but best to rule out the obvious first.

zippityzip · 30/06/2020 10:50

Christ how shocking for you. I hope you're ok. Have you spoken to your DH yet?

If you are 6 months pregnant you won't have long to get your head around it.

Good luck at the US tomorrow, I hope that at least gives you some answers.

Astella22 · 30/06/2020 10:57

Wow how strange, surly if u haven’t had Essex u can’t be pregnant
The ultrasound will tell u everything
Best of luck with it

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 30/06/2020 11:30

😱

iVampire · 30/06/2020 11:38

A positive means that high HCG has been detected

If there is no pregnancy (and it sounds very unlikely from what you say) then you need to go back to your GP as a matter of urgency, as further tests are needed to check for a rare conditions which also cause a rise.

Are you menopausal btw?

Himbeerrot · 30/06/2020 12:38

Not menopausal, definitely not 6 months pregnant. I know some people do find out late but there's no way, sorry for tmi but with my other children when I was more than 4 months pregnant, if I orgasmed then my lower stomach felt really hard for a few minutes and I've not had that at all.

Bigkingdom · 30/06/2020 13:22

Good luck for tomorrow. I don’t have any words of wisdom or advice unfortunately.

Lozz22 · 30/06/2020 14:58

I had a false positive on a Superdrugs digital test a few years ago got 6 of them reduced 5 negative and one positive although they were reduced and near their shelf life. I wasn't pregnant that time. Had another brand, just a 99p cheapo got lots of positives on them but clear blue negative. Dr said it was probably a faulty batch and to rule out a pregnancy. Period that month was really heavy and full of clots. So yeah false positives do happen but I wouldn't have thought the test at the Drs plus the one you did would both be a false one.
