“If freedom means anything at all, it means being able to tell people things they do not want to hear.” George Orwell.

Even someone as odious as KH should have that right.

KayakingOnDown · 19/06/2020 20:23

Megan Phelps-Roper, an ex-member of the Westboro Baptist Church, has specifically said in the past that people arguing back at her on Twitter was a huge influence on why she changed her views and decided to leave the church. If she'd been banned, that might not have happened. m.youtube.com/watch?v=bVV2Zk88beY

Good point.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 19/06/2020 20:27

I believe in freedom of speech. People are also banned for saying women are adult human females. It’s chilling

^^ This

AgeLikeWine · 19/06/2020 20:27

So is this the end for Hopkins? Sacked by the Sun, sacked by LBC and even sacked by the Mail (!) Now, Twitter have banned her. She now has nowhere else to go in the MSM, so will she now be banished to the fringes, and therefore irrelevance?

Pumperthepumper · 19/06/2020 20:30

She does have that right. She does not have the right to say whatever she likes, wherever she likes, with no consequence. Neither do you. Neither do I.
chomalungma · 19/06/2020 20:33

She can still say what she wants.

Just not on Twitter.
She could come on MN - but would probably get banned as well.
Platforms are within their rights to determine who can say what on their platforms.
She has not gone to jail for what she has said.
There are people who do go to jail for what they say - I guess those people who support KH and her right to say what she wants will be defending those people who have gone to jail for what they have said.

LondonCaIIing · 19/06/2020 20:33

She does have that right. Doesn't mean Twitter has to let her do it on their website. Just as mumsnet don't have to let me be abusive on this forum. That's not an impingement on my right to free speech.

Nickname21 · 19/06/2020 20:39

She is not being censored though. She can spout her hate speak elsewhere. Twitter bans trolls everyday and to me that's what KH is.

Galdos · 19/06/2020 20:44

Er, DameFanny, I was trying to be polite in referring to the possible mindset of others, which seem to include yours ...

KeepWashingThoseHands · 19/06/2020 20:45

Personally I say we stop this thread. She's probably lurking on here right now and loving all the attention - that's all she wants.

KH I ignore you.

beepbeeprichie · 19/06/2020 20:51

Twitter in itself demonstrates the absolute worst of what the social media age has brought us. Keyboard warriors who would get a bashing if they dared to air their ridiculous opinions in the pub. Last week someone commented thar they didn’t understand why people could congregate for BLM when he could not attend his grandparent’s funeral nor go to any of his wife’s antenatal scans. The replies were downright disgusting. Wishing his baby died, wishing his wife miscarries. It was absolutely shocking.
It also creates an echo chamber where people only interact with those with agreeing views and block the rest (see Janey Godley for a public example)

Btw KH is undoubtedly an odious individual. I do not align with any of her views and I would not waste my time following her on any social media platform.

MrBennsshop · 19/06/2020 20:54

I also believe in freedom of speech. However social media is merely the modern equivalent of writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper. And it's up to the newspaper whether they publish your letter or not.

She can go and stand on a box at Speakers Corner if she wants to.

NotACleverName · 19/06/2020 20:56

Once again it is glaringly obvious that too many people have a fundamental misunderstanding of what freedom of speech entails. If I start spouting racist shit on MN they're well within their right to ban me, because the website has ToS, just like Twitter does.

Hatey Plopkins is not being silenced or censored. She can carry on saying whatever she likes. She just can't do it on Twitter anymore. You are not entitled to a platform to say whatever you want.

Nope. If Katie Hopkins is banned for racism, Ice Cube should be too. Either racists are banned or they aren't.

Then feel free to start a petition asking for Twitter to ban him as well ¯\(ツ)

I like the Whatabouttery on this thread a lot, too!

museumum · 19/06/2020 21:00

She has the right to think and say what she likes. But twitter has the right (and imo is right) to refuse to amplify / publish her opinions.

flashbac · 19/06/2020 21:05

She has started two new accounts so the fan girls on here can go scoot along and follow.

flashbac · 19/06/2020 21:07

O FFS @Pollyputthepizzaon, don't compare the gender critical movement to disgusting racists.

Impatientwino · 19/06/2020 21:09

Thing is, she's an absolute massive cunt so personally I'm willing to overlook the whole freedom of speech thing Grin

flashbac · 19/06/2020 21:10

Ppl wouldn't be sticking up for her so called 'right to free speech' if she spouted anti-Semitic stuff. Muslims and black ppl fair game tho. Confused

ZolaGrey · 19/06/2020 21:28

I too don't agree with what she says most of the time but don't support a ban. What was she said?

Er, everything that's come out of her mouth for decades?

There's free speech and there's inciting hatred and hate speech. She specialises in the latter.

Galdos · 19/06/2020 21:40

But isn't it helpful to have her views broadcast so there is something concrete to rail against? I find her views odious, but she seems to be popular and appears to reflect the views of some/many of the populace. Surely better to know her views and confront them, than ban her from some media without engaging? Recall how the Bolsheviks snuck past the Social Democrats in 1916/17 ...

Pollyputthepizzaon · 19/06/2020 21:45

@flashbac ah but who gets to decide what is allowed and what isn’t. There are people who think the GC speech is 100 x more disgusting and hateful.

If you want to stifle free speech be careful what you wish for.

The people who own the platform. In this case Twitter. This isn’t stifling free speech.

MistyMinge2 · 19/06/2020 21:56

There's freedom of speech, and then there's being a right wing, racist, nasty cunt. Good riddance. Shame she can't be wiped off the face of the earth and take trump with her.

namechangeindiana · 19/06/2020 22:12

She's vile. This is hilarious.
