Wow just clicked on the BBC link - She has aged so much!! Not the point of this thread I know shallow Hal here but spite obviously shows in your face in the end

chomalungma · 19/06/2020 22:19

I find her views odious, but she seems to be popular and appears to reflect the views of some/many of the populace

Lots of followers does not equal popularity.
I am sure many people follow her to debate with her - if that is possible.
Or to counter her views,
And no doubt many people do have similar views - because the UK does have its share of racists / fascists / far right individuals who have no problem with the hate she comes out with.

bellinique · 19/06/2020 22:25

I haven't RTFT so apologies if this has been covered but - does freedom of speech really mean we have to turn the other cheek when somebody is saying something extreme and hateful in a way which encourages that to spread through society?

Did Hitler deserve free speech or should the platforms he used have blocked him from spreading his ideologies to other people?

Surely we can promote free speech whilst also recognising there has to be a limit when that free speech is threatening a peaceful society? It isn't black and white.

SerenityNowwwww · 19/06/2020 22:28

I suspect they did it for her own good. I don’t think she is quite well to be honest.

I’ve seen far worse comments allowed to stand on twitter so yes, I suspect it’s like when you take the sharp scissors away from great aunt Mary who thinks that the cat is Satan.

BashStreetKid · 19/06/2020 23:51

@022828MAN

I don't agree with her views but I also don't agree with the banning/cancelling/silencing of people either so can't get on board with this.
She hasn't been silenced. She has simply been deprived of one platform for spreading her views. There is no human right to a Twitter account.
BashStreetKid · 19/06/2020 23:53

@Nartl0ngNow

Such a shame, her sarcasm and quick wit amused me. It's also a good idea to hear things from a different angle before making an opinion on a situation. I don't agree with KH to not extend the school meals through the summer holidays but it's a reasonable to look into how things are financed. Regardless of where the money comes from, children shouldn't go hungry.
Quick wit? I've never come across anything she says that's remotely witty. And she always comes back with essentially the same tired responses. She has always struck me as pretty thick.
BashStreetKid · 19/06/2020 23:57

@RightIsRight

They need to start banning the left wingers who threaten you with death just because you’ve voted Tory but they won’t do that, will they?
Yes, they would, and yes, they do.
SleepingStandingUp · 19/06/2020 23:57

“If freedom means anything at all, it means being able to tell people things they do not want to hear.” George Orwell.
Even someone as odious as KH should have that right.

Twitter isn't a human right. She's not bound and gagged in a cellar. She has a YouTube channel with thousands of subscribers.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/06/2020 23:59

Tbh this is the most I've heard of KH in months. I'm sure she's absolutely revelling in the column inches and I'm sure her YouTube subscribers have gone up too

chomalungma · 20/06/2020 00:03

I'm sure she's absolutely revelling in the column inches and I'm sure her YouTube subscribers have gone up too

I always wonder what her family think of her - especially her children. I wonder how they've grown up and what views they have been exposed to through discussion at home.

Seeing your mum trending on Twitter for something she has said and then being banned can't be good for them.

morriseysquif · 20/06/2020 00:06

Free Speech means she can go on Speakers Corner and spout her views, or self publish pamphlets or go on YouTube or Facebook where she might not be banned. It is just Twitter* banning her.

*Other forums for self aggrandising are available. Grin

SinisterBumFacedCat · 20/06/2020 00:37

I fucking hate the views like hers are being held up as an example of free speech because it’s a get out clause used to excuse being as hateful as possible. Kind of devalues what free speech is in the first place.

Elliania · 20/06/2020 00:48

Someone described the situation really well; her being removed from Twitter is only censorship in the same way a bouncer or a manger will remove an angry shouting racist from a club or pub. They're still allowed to be an angry shouting racist, just not on private property.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 20/06/2020 00:54

That's a good way of putting it, @Elliania

@FishAreAcquaintancesNotFood

Banning is such an own goal.

Banning people makes them a martyr to their cause. If you let someone speak you let everyone see who they are.

As for banning Trump. He is the president of the United States and like it or not Twitter is how a large percentage of people get their news. It would be no better than the actual news agencies refusing to report on the president which would be actually mad.

If Trump isn't relected this time it will be because the electorate had four years of his Twitter rantings and could see what he actually thought at 2 am. Thank FUCK for it too. .

The only flaw in your argument is that no one remembers Milo Yianopolis any more since he was banned, and that turd from Info Wars never fills up my timeline any more. They don’t become martyrs. They fuck off and are forgotten about. They no longer set an agenda for public debate. I’m pretty happy about that. Aren’t you?
FishAreAcquaintancesNotFood · 20/06/2020 06:53

No, you don't remember him. It's a bit like the way my husband didn't think anyone would vote Brexit because we dont know any brexiteers.

They no longer set an agenda for public debate. I’m pretty happy about that. Aren’t you?

No, twitter is setting the agenda and I'm really not happy about that. Jonathan Wax My Balls Yanive posted for years, while being called out for being a predator. Meanwhile it was women who were banned for pointing it out. Im not happy about that . Are you?

It will always be women and minorities who lose out it we go down the route of allowing others to decide acceptable speech because we are not the ones with power.

sashh · 20/06/2020 07:05

She's skint so needs to cause an uproar.

If Jack Monroe had wanted she could have left Katie in a situation where her children were on free school meals

compostmentis · 20/06/2020 07:25

If you can’t speak freely, you’re not free. The basic idea is that it ultimately has a salutary affect as arguments get hashed out in public: respect the right, not necessarily what’s said. Frankly I find a lot of the thinking on this thread a bit frightening, but I wouldn’t want people not to be able to speak their mind.

Twitter may be a private company, but like Facebook, there are now good arguments to consider it something very much like a public utility.

RightIsRight · 20/06/2020 07:28

Hate speech and provoking hatred are not permitted in the UK or most of the EU and rightly so

Tell that to the the left wingers. They haven’t got the memo...

DameXanaduBramble · 20/06/2020 07:33

Good riddance to bad rubbish

LevoMental · 20/06/2020 07:34

Meh. She's nothing but an attention seeker, I don't believe half the shite she spouts publically are her true beliefs; she's deliberately provocative to get people to pay attention to her.

Removing that facility will hopefully force back to obscurity where she belongs.

MaxNormal · 20/06/2020 07:53

Twitter is a private company not a fundamental human right. They can ban who they like.
Anyone who thinks it's a "free speech" issue is hard of thinking.

Thanks for confirming you’re unhappy that racists and the far right are prevented from setting the agenda for public debate. That tells me all I need to know about you.

A bit like newspapers should be?
Or MN?

Newspapers have a massive impact on the views people here and how they influence them - and we all know the newspapers in this country have some very predictable views - and large platforms.

Maybe these should all be under public ownership?

chomalungma · 20/06/2020 08:40

I wonder how the Muslim community feels about her being banned - given all she has said about them in the past?

She has used her platform to blame Muslims for loads of things. Using her platform to spread fake news designed to encourage hate against a community.

Did you know that she has spread fake news?
