Dp had an ingrown hair 3 weeks ago that has suddenly decided to go bananas. I’ve forced him to call his GP and waiting a call back, but wondering if any MNers could shed some light in the meantime!

I think the nozzles on those are designed to fit up a PFBs nose, not suck the insides of an epic cyst out of a 1cm hole in a mans leg.

Miljea · 21/06/2020 00:14

What I'm not getting is- the original, and subsequent picture are of a hole. An empty space.

Why are so many people desperate to 'have a squeeze'? It's not a blackhead. The contents are gone. It's a hole. That, treated properly, will in-fill and close.

Isthisreallylife · 21/06/2020 01:51

I think you’re being very kind and caring OP. In a previous life I was married and my (then) DH got a small piece of dirty metal imbedded in the fleshy part of his thumb. I did the ‘you should see someone....’, ‘how about cleaning that......’ to no avail. Later that evening while watching TV I noticed 2 red lines tracking up his wrist towards his elbow and (just out of curiousity) I timed it at 2cm in 10 minutes. I got up, dressed, and with car keys in hand returned to DH who still questioned my judgement. The only thing to move him was when I explained (Dead pan) that I’d checked and found his life insurance had expired and so we were going to the hospital!
10 days in hosp with IV AB resulted and a nasty scar but from then on DH respected my judgement on health issues.
Not a nurse/doctor/consultant or anything medical. Just a wife and mother of boys!

You’re a better woman than me Gungadin (OP)😂😂

The latest picture looks like the very top layer of the skin is just ready to peel off. I wouldn't be able to resist trying, be so satisfying if it does.

torthecatlady · 21/06/2020 03:07

The comments on this thread have both horrified me and made me cry with laughter. I refuse to google botfly or I may never leaves the house again.

Op I'm glad your dh has the antibiotics, did the doctor say anything about having it packed to heal from the inside out (once the infection has passed)?

GraceChurch · 21/06/2020 06:54

Absolutely minging. Like a fucking sink hole.

BubbleBoop · 21/06/2020 07:14

This reminds me of an old thread on here from a woman posting about her DH who also had a thing in his leg and HE COULD FEEL IT MOVING! I think he had to go to the hospital of tropical medicine to have the thing killed then removed and it was then taken away to he studied. The DH felt quite sad afterwards that the thing had died Shock I don’t know if it was a botfly or something else, I wish I could find the thread!

If that was me I’d have to be put into an induced coma for the duration Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/06/2020 08:03

BubbleBoop I remember that one (and yes I did think "Oooh what if" when I saw this poor leg Shock )
The one you're thinking of ....(she had all her threads deleted ) her DH was from Africa IIRC , in the area you had to iron all clothing twhich had hung outside o kill the eggs of various flies otherwise they'd hatch on the warmth of the skin and burrow in

TrickyD · 21/06/2020 08:09

Yes, BubbleBoop and 70isa, I remember that one .

I think she gave the moving thing a name as if it were a family pet.

MsMeNz · 21/06/2020 08:19

My husband's gets these whenever he gets bit from British midges, they are horrible and of course reluctant to go to Dr until the swelling is terrible. Antibiotics cleans it right up but leaves scars. He's not from this country and for whatever reason what germs they carry his body can't handle.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/06/2020 14:30

@MsMeNz, hope you live somewhere reasonably midge free! He wouldn't have much fun in Scotland's midge season when we all get eaten alive!!!

Juiceey · 21/06/2020 15:33

posting purely to follow for updates!

Bluebiddy · 21/06/2020 17:21

@happydivorcee

My ex DH had a similar looking thing on his leg. GP said spider bite... 5 months later it still hadn’t healed and it was so much worse. It wouldn’t heal and it went down to the bone. He was eventually diagnosed with Pyoderma gangrenosum and had to take such a massive amount of steroids he got diabetes for a while. It was a nightmare!
oh jesus, i just googled pyoderma gangrenosum - that is HORRENDOUS
ListeningQuietly · 21/06/2020 17:50

@TeddyIsaHe
I hope your DH slept well and that the AB and saline combination is working wonders

hopefully next time he'll hit ingrown hairs with saline long before they abcess

has he thought up the hollywood story for the scar yet?

AdelaideK · 21/06/2020 17:57

A few posters have mentioned cellulitis but it doesn't look like that to me.

I'm glad he's got antibiotics just don't touch it.

terrimom · 22/06/2020 03:10

I work in animal medicine and we often see botfly larve in pets in the summer months. I thought the same when I saw the picture. Get a visit with a GP as soon as you can. Good luck

Justaboy · 22/06/2020 07:10

Urrgh! thats n blood poisioning a former GF of mine had that some years ago!, around 10 days in hospital for her and very ill, and it seemed so innocent just a couple of red lines as this poster says;!..

SpiderPlant1 · 22/06/2020 07:26

Can we have an updated pic OP to see if it's gone down?

LadyEloise · 23/06/2020 08:18

@TeddyisaHe
I hope hour dp is ok and the antibiotics have had an effect.

TeddyIsaHe · 23/06/2020 08:32

Yes he’s feeling much better and it looks soooo much less terrifying and disgusting! I’ll post an update pic when he’s up and about.

OP posts:
LadyEloise · 23/06/2020 08:56

So glad to hear that.
It really looked awful.

TeddyIsaHe · 23/06/2020 22:47

Finally an update! There’s still a hole (probably housing 3million botfly 😂) but it looks far worse on camera than it does in real life.

Antibs are doing their job. He’s now got an ingrown hair on his shoulder that is crying out to be filmed for Sporner’s Corner so that will be tomorrow’s project!

OP posts:
NooneElseIsSingingMySong · 23/06/2020 22:51

Oh that’s definitely improving! Glad he’s on the mend.

SionnachGlic · 23/06/2020 23:21

Good News...it still looks well dodge tho...I hope those anti-bs are for another few days longer. Does he know that you are posting the pics & is happily doing the leg modelling... a bit Angelina at the Oscars 🤣 Fair play to him...

ListeningQuietly · 24/06/2020 09:31

@TeddyIsaHe
And now you know about hot salty water, he need never go through that again.

Delighted its looking so much better.
