DD went out at 2pm yesterday and screamed, I thought she was messing around but nope, there it was! It was actually a peahen :)
And it is still here, showing off to my cockerels and roosting in a tree for the second night!
At what point does it stop being 'that peahen' and start being 'my peahen'?

Don't worry, I am making attempts to locate an owner....... just not trying too hard....

we keep chickens.
We got a pair of ducks, great I thought, cute ducklings I thought. Not only did they not produce a clutch, she hardly even laid any eggs.

Then one morning they had gone. We think they didn't go into the house overnight and the fox got them (wings clipped so they didn't fly away)

blooming useless.

We have a wild breeding pair and last year she took herself into the duck house. We were hopeful, but slowly one by one she threw her eggs out and eventually left the house having produced no ducklings at all. This year we woke up at the start of lockdown to her trooping out of the house with eleven babies behind her. Ten survived and left home this morning ☹️ We have foxes as well but they are pretty savvy. The only time they really let their guard down is when they are fighting over breeding.

We have lots of wild ducks round us and generally get adopted by a few every year. On the whole they seem to be pretty useless mothers. My children used to get quite upset when they were little as they would count the ducklings every day and discover that they got steadily fewer as time went on. But this year we have an amazing mum! She started with 9 tiny fluffy ducklings and still has 9 "adolescents" now. Interestingly, instead of leading them around like they usually do, she tended to follow them so I presume she has had a better chance of stopping any get lost or caught by predators. She also seems to be in a menage a trois with 2 quite big males, who look like they get along fine, so maybe the additional body guards have protected the babies? We've never had more than around half make it to maturity before. They are quite demanding mind you. If they show up and there's no food available they drum on the patio doors with their beaks until I go out with some seed. Very cute though.

My mum had a peacock turn up in her garden a few years ago and it never left, she has a large garden with chickens, ducks and ponys so he is just part of the gang now, a couple of years later 2 pea hens turned up and have also stayed, they get looked after very well, my mum is a real life snow white lol
