There's a PEACOCK in my garden!!

DD went out at 2pm yesterday and screamed, I thought she was messing around but nope, there it was! It was actually a peahen :)
And it is still here, showing off to my cockerels and roosting in a tree for the second night!
At what point does it stop being 'that peahen' and start being 'my peahen'?

Don't worry, I am making attempts to locate an owner....... just not trying too hard....

My sister had a peacock turn up in her garden one day. He decided to move in but then started trying to get frisky with her hens who were all terrified and stopped coming out of their shed so they had to buy a peahen so he could transfer his affections on her. She then had baby peacocks. They were so cute but she was a terrible mother, always standing on them and once, walked them over a road gully and the chicks all fell in so my BIL had to rescue them all. There was never a dull moment once they'd arrived. Beware OP Grin

@userxx

I love collective nouns.
Me too @userxx. I love the idea of an ostentation of peafowl.

Check out this - it's a revelation

A bellowing of bullfinches - fantastic.

OP, thank you for such a joyful thread. I'm so glad she's still with you.

fuckinghellapeacock · 18/06/2020 10:19

A mischief of peafowl seems suitable!
Haha
I am scanning the skies constantly hoping a peacock will swoosh in and woo her...... she's still performing for the chickens but seems to have moved from the Brahma to the Sablepoot, with his magnificent tale....

Wow look at that!! That's amazing!

They have around 20 living in Holland park in central london wild, they sometimes leave and cause chaos on the local streets and gardens. They need to kind of have a run way to fly so if they land in a small London size garden they get trapped for ages. They also sunbath of hot car roofs in summer and refuse to get off.

They also have some flamingos living on the roof of Kensington roof gardens, and pelicans in St James park.

Winesalot · 18/06/2020 10:51

I am laughing!

Enjoy it as a novelty. However, I grew up with having peacocks and they are very noisy. And peacock poo is incredibly messy when they pick a place to roost.

They are so beautiful. However, the reality is you might want it to be an occasional visitor not a resident unless you don't want use under that part of the tree again. And don't let them sit on your car Grin

@fuckinghellapeacock

A parliament of owls A murder of crows A charm of goldfinches

Birds get the best collective nouns......

A 'Flamboyance of Flamingos' is my favourite.
englebertsausagedog · 18/06/2020 11:16

Also, if you call "nee-how" at them, they often answer back

HUCKMUCK · 18/06/2020 11:20

I am feeling very inadequate in the birds in my garden department.

All I get are noisy fucking magpies who wind my cat up and seagulls the size of ostriches. (may be exaggerating their size).

OP - loving your username!

What happens when her husband turns up and sees her with the cockerels?

fuckinghellapeacock · 18/06/2020 12:08

@user1471565182 I have no idea but I imagine I could build stadium style seating and charge for viewing, and take bets on the outcome, at that point.

When we were in Sri Lanka we saw loads of them in the wild. They had shed their tail feathers and looked really odd prancing around.

SistersOfPercy · 18/06/2020 12:25

Used to be a peacock here, a white one. Not seen him for a couple of years now though. We also have a large heron and a kingfisher that visits regularly.
We do have wild mallard ducks. Wild is a loose term, they follow me around the garden and come in the house for food. Here they all are lining up under the front window to shout at me for lunch.....

At the moment, I have half a dozen little blue tits sitting in my willow tree and very pissed off looking robin. No peacock. I've waited all day but nothing ...

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 18/06/2020 14:25

@fuckinghellapeacock Yes we keep finding the occasional shimmery feather on the street. That's when you know he's lurking nearby.....🦚

fuckinghellapeacock · 18/06/2020 14:35

Mallard ducks have a grim mating strategy. Isabella Rosellini can teach you all about it in this utterly marvellous video:

My vaginal structure is a twisted tunnel Grin. WOW

fuckinghellapeacock · 18/06/2020 14:38

@SistersOfPercy maybe your mallard ducks wanted a break from the drakes and were angling to come in for a brew? Grin

Jealous of the peacock and the flock of pet mallards!all I have is a magpie that comes and pecks loudly on my window and quote honestly I'm a bit scared of him 😬. We do have a kingfisher 5 minutes down stream though.

SistersOfPercy · 18/06/2020 16:09

Believe it or not @fuckinghellapeacock those are ducklings....

Together are about three months old now so ready to bugger off to pastures new shortly. Funny things at this stage as you can’t tell which are male and which female. Only reason I can spot mum is she’s slightly lighter in colour.

Duck mating is fucking brutal. They hold the female under water and can kill her. They scrap on the banks of the pond etc. I’ve known DH chase stray males down the drive in his socks (I find this hilarious) as they were ‘ganging up on her!’ Bless him.
I honestly thought when I moved here it would be cups of tea in the sun watching the ducks paddle across the pond. The reality is fights, foxes that steal things, sparrowhawks tipping apart the local pigeon population. It’s bloody brutal.

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2020 16:10

sisters love your mallards but concerned as an eatery you aren’t employing ‘social distancing’ !!

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2020 16:14

It is brutal. Recently 6 goings disappeared locally. Plus here is busy barn owl who spends every evening flying in and out - think around 20 mice and small birds got. Beginning to feel very grim (and beautiful).

HeronLanyon · 18/06/2020 16:14

Goslings not goings.

They have zero concept of personal space. This was just before they hopped in to the porch as they know I keep duck food in there 😂

On balance, I'm glad the peacock here buggered off as I cant afford another mouth to feed.

We don't have a garden but did wake up one day last year and saw these in our street. They are regulars now.
