There's a PEACOCK in my garden!!

DD went out at 2pm yesterday and screamed, I thought she was messing around but nope, there it was! It was actually a peahen :)
And it is still here, showing off to my cockerels and roosting in a tree for the second night!
At what point does it stop being 'that peahen' and start being 'my peahen'?

Don't worry, I am making attempts to locate an owner....... just not trying too hard....

I've never seen a peacock fly, I just can't imagine it

Nitpickpicnic · 17/06/2020 06:13

My mind has been blown. People are actually ‘plagued’ by peacocks?

If I found one in my garden, it would ALMOST turnaround my 2020, I’d be thrilled and prolly tell everyone I’d ever met!

I suppose there are people who’d be excited by the enormous flocks of bastard sulphur-crested cockatoos in my garden. Loud, horrible squawking, as they strip the whole garden (and the wood on the windowsills).

bluefoxmug · 17/06/2020 06:18

a peacock would add to the bird noise here.
the noisiest are the parakeets and seagulls.
the 'gulls are particularly 'entertaining' calling: HERE HERE HERE HI HI HI HI all bloody day long.

I live in the lake district and we have a peacock and a peahen.
He's quite outgoing, will sit on your fence or in your garden, shes not really she will just strut up and down the estate (housing not private or country) they are meant to live in a field, but prefer to stand outside people houses and scream 'EYORRE EYORRE' at ridiculous o'clock.
I've never seen his tail feathers.do their thing, so i think he is in a long term marriage and has given up trying to impress her?!

Oldraver · 17/06/2020 07:02

My OH has a peacock that follows him at work. He has a sort of window high up over a lower building and he frequently see's him scoping out the factory. There were pea babies a few years ago. They have had to be shoo-ed out a few times

I told OH that it fancies him though he thinks it's the robots he likes

Oldraver · 17/06/2020 07:10

We once had a romantic valentines break at a hotel next to Leeds Castle. We were treated by the hotel, pool, spa, bar, reception being completely overtaken by a massive traveller wedding that raged until the small hours, and we're then woken at 5am by a peacock that was roosting in the tree outside our window. Happy times

CarolVordermansArse · 17/06/2020 07:14

I have a plague of parakeets here, they moved from the trees a few houses down last year to next door, often see them in my apple tree, noisy sods. Am wondering if I am going to find a peacock on my shed roof looking in the bedroom windows and waiting for breakfast.

HonneyBea · 17/06/2020 07:17

Another one here with a garden full of either scrapping or shagging wood pigeons! It's like a Benny Hill sketch sometimes the way they chase each other around the garden!

piefacedClique · 17/06/2020 07:26

Oh my god! The flying peacock video! It’s like Game of thrones for ornithologists!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 17/06/2020 07:30

When I was younger we used to have peacocks freely roaming our public park. I can't imagine that happening now.........they'd get nicked for a start !!!

nancybotwinbloom · 17/06/2020 07:32

I didn't k ow they could fly till I just watched that video.

They are so gorgeous your very lucky to have one in your garden.

The hens are nonchalantly ignoring her

nancybotwinbloom · 17/06/2020 08:06

That is a hen not a cockerel?

I know nothing about hens!

Except and I might even have this wrong, that different types lay different colour eggs

ThickFast · 17/06/2020 08:09

Er @JacobReesMogadishu you like the noise they make??? Surely not.

OP you need a mandarin duck and a parrot now and you’ll have the most beautiful collection of birds.

chickadeedeedee · 17/06/2020 08:12

In my parents village in Durham, the peacocks are considered a pest.

(DC and I are always delighted when we go to visit though)

chickadeedeedee · 17/06/2020 08:13

@Oldraver your DH has peacocks and robots in his work life? #livingthedream

UncleShady · 17/06/2020 08:17

Are you in Kent? www.kentlive.news/news/kent-news/kent-town-taking-lockdown-seriously-4155568 I think these lot have a Facebook page dedicated to sightings as well.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 17/06/2020 08:19

I'm very jealous op!
In our old house we had room for a 12' by 6' aviary. It was full of zebra finches and Java sparrows. Sigh, I miss them.
Nowadays we have to have a practical shed and no birds. Boo.
The best thing I ever saw was a sparrowhawk that thought our aviary was it's food source. It flew smack into the chicken wire roof and then rolled onto our lawn looking a bit stunned.
My cat was going crazy to try and get out, but I could see the claws on that thing and even temporarily stunned the sparrowhawk would have won that fight!
I stayed watching it until it flew away. Beautiful bird it was.

OllyBJolly · 17/06/2020 08:25

I used to work in Dunfermline in Scotland and it wasn't unusual to see peacocks and peahens strutting about the town centre....

Abadon34 · 17/06/2020 08:31

OMG WE NEED TO NAME HER!!!!

TreacherousPissFlap · 17/06/2020 08:33

VeganCow · 17/06/2020 08:33
