There's a PEACOCK in my garden!!

DD went out at 2pm yesterday and screamed, I thought she was messing around but nope, there it was! It was actually a peahen :)
And it is still here, showing off to my cockerels and roosting in a tree for the second night!
At what point does it stop being 'that peahen' and start being 'my peahen'?

Don't worry, I am making attempts to locate an owner....... just not trying too hard....

OP you need a mandarin duck and a parrot now and you’ll have the most beautiful collection of birds.

We don't have feral parrots in our area but I did see a couple of mandarin ducks at a local nature reserve a couple of years ago. (I suspect they'd escaped from a nearby WWT reserve).

And some Carolina wood ducks on the Wharfe - they're very attractive too.

Our town has a random peacock who has been named by some residents. He's been around a few years and is a bit noisy. Every now and then a post appears on our local page along the lines of "did i just see a peacock in the street?!!"

Nonchalant replies "That's Paul"

dottiedodah · 17/06/2020 08:41

We had Peacocks in our School Playground when I was younger .Our School backed onto a Manor house ,and they used to come over for any lunchtime snacks!Occasionally They would put their feathers out to much ooohing and ahhing from us youngsters!

Wow Carolina wood ducks are amazing. I want one.

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/06/2020 09:23

Perhaps she'll move in. We have a wild pheasant who likes to be with our free ranging hens get free food

Beatingthisthing · 17/06/2020 09:42

Not a peacock but a few years ago when they had awful floods in Doncaster, my Dads house flooded and he found 2 koi carp in his flooded garden! He rescued them and the owner came to collect them a few days later after a local SM appeal!

WellTidy · 17/06/2020 09:50

Wow. I am very envious. All we have are two magpies, which seem to be permanently in our garden. And the occasional blackbird who has eaten each and every cherry on our tree.

fuckinghellapeacock · 17/06/2020 10:50

I have always wanted a Mandarin duck. I have considered popping hatching eggs under a broody silkie and feigning surprise at the outcome to get round DH's refusal Grin

Years ago, we had 3 that visited us for a couple of weeks. They would take naps in the greenhouse and sit on top of the shed. They were bold as brass and walk up and down the road without a care in the world. I got a shock one day, when I opened the back door and one was standing right outside - he didn't seem alarmed and didn't move. I had to walk back in the house and wait for him to go.

Out local tip has quite a few who seem to have made it their home. One time I went to put garden waste in the skip and there was a peahen with her babies sitting on a nice warm nest of garden trimmings with dad sitting on the end keeping an eye on things.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 17/06/2020 10:59

I love peafowl!

I want a huge ostentatious flock of them, I also need to win the lottery so I can buy out all the neighbours and have a fancy pond and lots of little secret garden shed housey things all installed.

tutorwho · 17/06/2020 11:01

@JacobReesMogadishu

Near where I am there is a village plagues by wild peacocks. I assume they must have got away from somewhere ages ago but nobody has claimed them. They were having a poll on culling them.
Do you like in Suffolk?

There are some wild ones that the locals dislike. I was driving home from work and turned the corner to see one standing on the pavement. I was very confused 😂

They also have them at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. That one was really noisy!

Davros · 17/06/2020 11:07

Many years ago we left our house in Zone 2 London to go out to meet friends for dinner. We live in the middle of an Edwardian terrace. There was a peacock on our nextdoor neighbour's path! Because we were running late we couldn't stay to sort it out but phoned the RSPCA and left. When we got back it was gone. I don't know where it came from, although we are near the Zoo I don't think they had peacocks there

Poshjock · 17/06/2020 11:12

@OllyBJolly look up peacocks of pittencreiff Park on FB. They’ve got funding and have opened up a Peacock enclosure in the old zoo. The population almost became extinct and now they have 7 adults and many eggs. Peacocks roam the streets of Dunfermline once more Smile. I love the sound of them, I really missed it when they’d gone and now it reminds me of my childhood in the park.

Veronicat · 17/06/2020 11:20

We have pPeacocks over the river to us.
The bastard things start screaming at 4.30am.
If it's one of those you can keep it!

purpleboy · 17/06/2020 11:31

Our neighbor has 7 of the bastards! They are forever coming into our garden and shitting everywhere not to mention the constant noise😩
Worst thing is they bloody talk back, dd makes a noise and they copy her, it can go back and forth between then for hours!!

HazelBite · 17/06/2020 11:34

Wow, I only get pheasants in the garden!

fuckinghellapeacock · 17/06/2020 11:50

I am really enjoying these stories - it seems so absolutely British to have a peacock named Paul roaming the village.

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 17/06/2020 12:13

We have a local Peacock known as 'Peter' who walks round the same neighbourhood at this time of year, every year since around 2012 now!

Nobody knows where he goes in the winter....

There's a PEACOCK in my garden!!
fuckinghellapeacock · 17/06/2020 12:19

Peter and Paul need to get together and sit on a wall, or something.

ThickFast · 17/06/2020 13:35

That’s a brilliant mandarin duck egg plan.

Panicmode1 · 17/06/2020 13:38

We had a peacock fly into our garden last year - it pottered around the neighbourhood for about 3 or 4 days, making the most almighty racket trying to find a mate (tricky in the middle of a town!).

He eventually pottered off - home we all assume, and has never been seen since, but it was rather a lovely distraction for a few days.

Karwomannghia · 17/06/2020 13:39

I adore them. I have peacock stuff all over my house. Dd 3 just said ‘peacocks’ randomly and she can’t see this!

HeronLanyon · 17/06/2020 13:40

Be careful of any car or tyres/wheels. I had a lot of damage done by four pea hens deciding to wander up the lane and jump onto car roof. They then pecked away at the tyres. Beautiful. Trouble ! Noisy.

Gingerkittykat · 17/06/2020 13:48

Peacocks have the run of my town and everyone loves them, there is currently eggs in the aviary so people waiting to see if they hatch since the town was down to one bird at one point.

They do get into mischief sometimes and I've been stuck behind one on the road more than once!

overweightcat · 17/06/2020 14:24

Ooooh where are you @fuckinghellapeacock ?
Yorkshire?

Only asking as we have recently had an escaped peacock from a local(ish) farm roaming around the village and it chased someone across a field when the bloke tried to approach it Grin
