There's a PEACOCK in my garden!!

DD went out at 2pm yesterday and screamed, I thought she was messing around but nope, there it was! It was actually a peahen :)
And it is still here, showing off to my cockerels and roosting in a tree for the second night!
At what point does it stop being 'that peahen' and start being 'my peahen'?

Don't worry, I am making attempts to locate an owner....... just not trying too hard....

They are very destructive.. Beware of your garden!!

TigerDroveAgain · 16/06/2020 22:47

We had two peahens (autocorrect wanted that to say beatniks Grin) in our garden for a couple of weeks. They do gigantic poos so be careful what you wish for! Owners captured them eventually.

SummerHouse · 16/06/2020 22:49

Oh but they are noisy bastards. Peacocks that is not sure about peahens.

Peacock pate? Keep a jar for the winter, you’ll be glad of it! Good on some crispy French bread.

ElfDragon · 16/06/2020 22:51

We have a local celebrity pea hen. She’s always out and about, and local FB page is full of her exploits.

She spent a large part of last year evading capture (to be returned to her home) - following it was like keeping up with theWacky Racers trying to catch the pigeon 😂. She did eventually go back home, but was only there for a few weeks before escaping to roam once more.

fuckinghellapeacock · 16/06/2020 22:52

@CarolVordermansArse it's not that one, unless it has flown a looooong way Grin but I am sure I'll find the owner, we're very rural and lots not on social media etc. I'll check that register. Thanks

Near where I am there is a village plagues by wild peacocks. I assume they must have got away from somewhere ages ago but nobody has claimed them. They were having a poll on culling them.

fuckinghellapeacock · 16/06/2020 22:53

@ElfDragon I thought they had their wings clipped or were penned in or something - they are very valuable - I am surprised so many are about and about!

@JacobReesMogadishu that is very 2020 isn't it? A plague of peafowl

@Windyatthebeach DH is obsessed with his garden - it is immaculate. She was incredible polite and kept to the footpaths! Didn't even eat the raspberries! Now she is in the field in a tree Grin

I absolutely HATE them.
They scare me shitless with their freaky feathers.
You are living my worst nightmare, OP.

Glittercandle · 16/06/2020 22:56

There’s a peahen that lives somewhere around the local secondary school - every few days someone post on Facebook asking if anyone is missing one, it’s been there at least since September.

User0ne · 16/06/2020 22:57

If you live in County Durham it's probably a wild one. No point trying to find an owner.

Fingers crossed it doesn't attack your car (it's reflection) in mating season

Frownette · 16/06/2020 22:57

I'd get a terrible shock if I found one in the garden.

Can't see pics?

JacobReesMogadishu · 16/06/2020 22:58

I love the noise they make. Up there with tawny owls. Like being in bed and hearing them.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 16/06/2020 23:00

Peacocks are a wild-type of bird. They don't roost indoors, they roost high in trees, they can fly well and they will travel to where-ever there's food. All peacock owners know this. They also breed extremely well because the hens are very good mothers, so I doubt their owner will be worried.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 16/06/2020 23:02

If they start attacking you car, just prop up a few mirrors near by, and they'll attack that instead.

SanFrancisco49er · 16/06/2020 23:04

We used to have some locally that would appear from nowhere. My cat chased one and it flew onto the neighbour's roof and wouldn't come down, despite the owner driving up in a pick up truck and screeching at it.
I remember my cat and I watching the drama from our driveway and wondering if we should confess our part in it all...

suggestionsplease1 · 16/06/2020 23:04

Wait until he starts honking at 5am! You won't be such a fan then!

summerrose11 · 16/06/2020 23:06

I used to have 1 peacock and 3 peahens in my garden when I first moved in. Was pretty amazed. But the screeching at 4/5am done my head in. They roam freely still but don't seem them so much, no idea who's they are. I remember there was a petition to stop them roamly so freely I think but then people kicked up such a fuss about it.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 16/06/2020 23:07

@onalongsabbatical

FluffyKittensinabasket how can you be pure evil with a name like that? Grin
You have heard of chicken in a basket?
RightOnTheEdge · 16/06/2020 23:10

I can't see your picture of her 😭

After I read your post I decided to go look up how to buy a Peacock, so I could add a couple to the garden of my fantasy lottery House.

Wow they are very expensive aren't they!

FluffyKittensinabasket · 16/06/2020 23:10

This thread has given me the munchies. Just had some duck liver pate on toast. Wonder what peacock liver tastes like?

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 16/06/2020 23:12

@RightOnTheEdge - I'm sure you'd be able to buy some hatching eggs quite cheaply?
