36 COVID fatalities reported today. We are on the way out of this 🌟🌟

36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

Maybe ...

Mrsmorton · 14/06/2020 19:09

OP. 36 people dying is not cause to celebrate. They were mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers. It's incredibly sad and my thoughts are with the families involved.

Additionally. Weekend reporting is notoriously inaccurate so please save your fireworks.

Hugglespuffed · 14/06/2020 19:09

I think it is fantastic news. Yes, the weekends are always lower, and yes the figures won't always be this low. But it feels like a step in the right direction doesn't it.

Hugglespuffed · 14/06/2020 19:11

However, any life lost is incredibly sad. But the 2 aren't mutually exclusive. We can feel sad about the loss of these people and also feel positive that the figures are coming down. We aren't the ones who got us in to this mess.

RosieLemonade · 14/06/2020 19:11

@Mrsmorton I respect your point but not very long ago 1000+ mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters were dying each day. This is a positive.

Jkslays · 14/06/2020 19:18

It’s awful for the families that goes with out saying. But we are going in the right direction. This is cause to be positive. The public have done well.

Zero new cases in my local authority last week as well (wandsworth) - 326,000 people.

Despite schools being back, and massive parties in the Commons every weekend for weeks.

ScarlettDarling · 14/06/2020 19:23

Of course it's tragic for those poor people and their families but it's obvious that the op wasn't celebrating the fact that 36 people have died. She's clearly celebrating the fact that not more people have died. The fact that the death toll is decreasing is something to feel positive about, I certainly do op.

I’m not celebrating the death of 36 people. I’m celebrating the fact that we are beating this virus.

Just for comparison around 450 people die of cancer every day. If we managed to reduce cancer to this level I’d celebrate that too!

Just remember how quickly we went from 37 to 1000+

Stay alert. This is not the time to go to Primark.

MissClarke86 · 14/06/2020 19:28

I would like to be cautiously optimistic too.

The number of positive tests has plateaued this week though so we need to be careful not to become complacent. Again, there are many hidden factors behind the data and it’s hard to draw conclusions.

I think we will be ok. We’ve been past the peak a while now. The graph shows a steady decline. If we keep doing what we’ve been doing I think it will be fine for the kids to go back to school in a normal capacity and parents can get back to work Star

I'm going to wait for the ONS report first

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/06/2020 19:33

A good sign.

Betty98 · 14/06/2020 19:33

I also saw that figure and started to see light at the end of the tunnel.

CountessFrog · 14/06/2020 19:34

I agree, though the infection rates seem to have remained around 1200-1500 per day.

Which I find confusing.

Spied · 14/06/2020 19:35

I wish I could share your positivity however I worry it's a bit premature.

user1972548274 · 14/06/2020 19:36

Celebrating 36 people's lives being snuffed out is crass, however you try and spin it.

There is a reason cancer campaigns take the angle of "80% now survive this cancer, we need to increase that to reduce the tragedies others still experience" rather than "yippee only 20% of people die from this cancer now" .

SomewhereEast · 14/06/2020 19:38

Re the infection rate, we're now consistently hitting close to 200,000 tests a day & I understand we're leaning more & more towards proactively testing health care / care home staff generally, so I'm not that concerned at this point.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 14/06/2020 19:39

But we aren't going to keep doing what we have been doing - we've been in lockdown and only very slowly coming out of it. As of tomorrow shops are re opening, restrictions are lifting. If people become complacent then we will be back to square one again.

I think it's way too early for anyone to be announcing I think we will be ok - well, unless you are a member of SAGE and even then I'd like to see the research underpinning your optimism.

SomewhereEast · 14/06/2020 19:39

No one is "celebrating" people dying FFS.

helpfulperson · 14/06/2020 19:39

The whole point is that the numbers have dropped because of the measures in place. The distancing, the measures in workplaces, shops being closed, schools being closed etc. We need to be very very careful because if we think we can go back to the way we were before the figures will just go back up.

Look at the figures at the end of March and see how fast it went from under 100 to over a 1000 deaths a day.

Happymum12345 · 14/06/2020 19:41

I think the op is trying to find the positive in this absolutely dreadful situation. Of course any death is awful. Let’s all hold on to hope.

JacobReesMogadishu · 14/06/2020 19:44

I’m just hoping that this virus is burning out. It certainly seems to be doing.

MarshaBradyo · 14/06/2020 19:45

It’s good. A shame it’s still so hard to know how many people have had it and are immune (or not).
