36 COVID fatalities reported today. We are on the way out of this 🌟🌟

Jkslays · 14/06/2020 19:01

36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

OP I’ll not be putting any flags out here until that number is zero. Besides midweek figures do tend to give a better indication.

megletthesecond · 14/06/2020 19:50

But we've only managed to reduce deaths because thousands of workplaces are shut, working from home or on skeleton staff. Schools have limited numbers of kids in. Gyms are shut. Supermarkets aren't admitting customers as normal. Theatres and cinemas are shut. Loads of us aren't even able to mix with family yet (no one local).

We are so far away from beating covid. If we can open up everything again and have no rise within two months in the winter then we'll be able to say we should be ok.

Cheesecake53 · 14/06/2020 19:53

But more new infections than last Sunday, so I would not hold my breath.

R.I.P

It's also reassuring that Europe has been coming out of lockdown for a while now and they haven't had the much-talked about second wave.

But I read some posts on here and it reads like some people are almost disappointed that things are beginning to go back to normal again.

Europe? It consists of many different countries with different rates of infection and lockdown rules, or no lockdown. The UK is in Europe.
muckandnettles · 14/06/2020 20:00

Cautiously optimistic here as well.

101stNC · 14/06/2020 20:00

This sounds promising, long may it continue to fall.

I don't think anybody anywhere is celebrating the death of the 36 people Confused

Aragog · 14/06/2020 20:02

surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

This is what every teacher or teaching/school staff I know are hoping for anyway.

My friend teaches in China and after 20 weeks off school they returned recently with no SD and no masks. There are some things in place but they are now back 'normally' pretty much. 20 weeks gives us to part way into the summer holidays. So fingers crossed we don't have a backward step now we should be okay to be back.

helpfulperson · 14/06/2020 20:04

But Europe still have social distancing in shops, part time schooling, pubs/restaurants outside, etc. it isn't back to normal - its more like a holding position and this is what we will be in until there is a vaccine or it burns itself out.

daisychain01 · 14/06/2020 20:06

@TSSDNCOP

Just remember how quickly we went from 37 to 1000+

Stay alert. This is not the time to go to Primark.

We can go to the shops, we just need to be a lot more mindful than we used to be.

Social distancing
Lots of hand washing (Perfume-free soap is fine if you have sensitive skin)
No face touching
Trying not to touch merchandise unless you definitely want to buy the item.

We need to get the economy restarted so people keep their jobs.

daisychain01 · 14/06/2020 20:07

And face-covering, of course

MashedSpud · 14/06/2020 20:08

We still need to be careful. Look what’s happening in China again (if they were being truthful about the infection and death rate).

katmarie · 14/06/2020 20:10

My immunocompromised mum and 74 year old dad look like they both have it, so I'm finding this post a little revolting to be honest. How anyone can be celebratory about the number of deaths falling to anything other than zero is beyond me.

Khione · 14/06/2020 20:13

over 1500 people die every day in the UK, 400 of cancer every day. Compared to over a thousand deaths in one day the 36 is well worth celebrating and I don't see how this negates the sadness of any of the 1500 people that have died.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/06/2020 20:14

nobody is 'celebrating' but if we wait until the number of deaths falls to zero before we can say anything positive then we could be waiting years.

AdalindMeisner · 14/06/2020 20:14

Its Sunday, Monday will follow a similar trend and then Tuesday the numbers climb again to allow for weekend recording. I really hope this is different from every other week since this nightmare began but sadly I doubt it.

NowImLivinInExeter · 14/06/2020 20:14

Stay alert. This is not the time to go to Primark.

I hate Primark. I hate shopping. But every time I see a comment like this it makes me want to go for a mooch round Westfield.

Stop policing what people should or shouldn't do. The government have told people they can go to Primark, so why the fuck shouldn't they?

........

I'm so sorry about your parents, that is worrying. I agree with the rest of your post, of course it is good that the death rate is decreased but people are still dying from the virus and the rate could go up again if we are not careful.

Did your parents go out? I haven't been out of the house for months so no chance of me catching it at the moment.

DominaShantotto · 14/06/2020 20:15

How dare you see hope in anything OP! How dare you! How dare you look at the trend line and comment it's pointing in a downward line - until they raise everyone from the dead there shall be no cheer and the big garden furlough grand carnival of corona judgement shall continue forever!

Meanwhile our children will be locked up in cages and the sensible people will be floating around on a cloud of anti-depressants just to get through the day - but how dare you have hope OP - you shameful shameful person for wanting to see an improvement in things.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/06/2020 20:15

Vs around 77/78 last Sunday, so yes things are looking better week on week.

NowImLivinInExeter · 14/06/2020 20:15

I really hope this is different from every other week since this nightmare began but sadly I doubt it.

Well it clearly is since even though it is likely to be higher than this due to weekend reporting, it is still low.

Oaktree55 · 14/06/2020 20:16

The cases are going down due to lockdown /social distancing/being outside more etc. I think pretty much everyone thinks that come Autumn the cases will be rising. The virus hasn’t changed it been eliminated nor will it be unfortunately. This is very transmissible and numbers increase exponentially given half a chance. Unfortunately the only way of relaxing fully is a vaccine or therapeutic breakthrough. I just worry people think this is the end 🤦🏽‍♀️

Sparklfairy · 14/06/2020 20:16

Just for comparison around 450 people die of cancer every day.

Where's that then? Because in England and Wales we 'only' have around 11,000 deaths of ALL causes per week!

megletthesecond · 14/06/2020 20:16

yy helpful we're in a holding pattern. Nothing even close to a practical level of normal.
