36 COVID fatalities reported today. We are on the way out of this 🌟🌟

36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

I just read there have been 273 deaths from Covid today in the UK compared to 38 yesterday, is that right? I definitely did read it but one reads so many conflicting reports.

TheGreatWave · 16/06/2020 19:47

Sorry, I don't have anything to be positive about right now

I am sorry to hear that and I hope you see a chink of light soon at the end of the tunnel. I have spent part of today talking to people who have been shielding (mainly older 70/80+) Most commented that it had been going on for what feels like forever, but were still often looking for the pleasures, family visiting (stood in garden), the racing coming back on the Tele, their pet, or maybe just the garden. One fairly vulnerable person even told me "I'm fine pet, people worse than me."

Maybe today I just got the "glass half full" people, tomorrow maybe different, but still there in the struggles is some joy.

It’s the weekend effect. Less reporting at weekends. The weekly figures are the ones to watch.
Lynda07 · 16/06/2020 19:48

PS The reason I'm doubting is that the figure of 273, exactly that, was the death total in one day some weeks ago.

HesterShaw1 · 16/06/2020 19:49

Lynda that doesn't mean deaths today. It means reported deaths. Some of them could have taken place days ago, or e en weeks.

The key is the steady downward trend at the moment.

That's deaths that have been recorded yesterday, not happened yesterday, and it's a catch up from the weekend, as most hospital trusts, for example, don't report at weekends. The bump happens every week.

7 day rolling average is down to 155 a day, down 25% in a week, as is the 7 day average for England hospital admissions.

@Alsohuman It could just be me that thinks it's vile - it's too sweet for me. I'll have my brandy unmixed Smile

Alsohuman · 16/06/2020 19:52

I’ll have to give it another go when the pubs reopen!

Thanks.

233 reported today vs 38 reported yesterday. The daily figure is made up of deaths going back days if not weeks. It is also higher on a Tuesday compared to a monday as monday gives the figures from sunday and less deaths are reported on a weekend. Tuesday figures therefore have catch up from the weekend often referred to as data lag.

The important thing to look at is the 7 day rolling figure which is falling, now at 155 deaths reported per day(from all settings). This still doesn't mean that on average 155 people are dying per day as as I said before some reported deaths go back weeks.

What do you want me to say? Having family come visit me would cheer me up no end, having my little dog back with us would be a joy - he was my little shadow who never left my side. I'd love something positive in my life right now. What would you like me to say?

itsgettingweird · 16/06/2020 19:55

Thanks jour she's out. Feeling much better. Slow recovery but cancer is terminal. She's visiting very rural gardens centres with face masks etc. And no one at all is allowed to enter parents house. But she has to live some kind of life and minimise risks.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 16/06/2020 20:06

Ah yes the bullshit healthcare worker second wave prepper
I work in the nhs
We are frantically trying to make up lost ground and trying to get back to some sort of business as usual to try and save our patients coming to further harm due to delays in treatment whilst simultaneously ensuring that we are able to practice safely if there are further Covid cases
No one i speak to talk about a definitive second wave
We're just getting on with it
The least dementoring people I know are the people I work with every day
So fuck off with the fake "I know something you don't know" shit

Well zebra you don't have to say anything, but I am not sure being on these threads are doing you any favours.

Maybe hearhooves hide this topic and go on some of the more everyday ones. There are still some fun and funny threads about.

I'm very sorry you lost your dog. I lost my cat at the end of last year, and I live on my own. I know lockdown would have been a lot less lonely if she was still with me.

mightbealittlebitmad · 16/06/2020 21:43

So being prepared for a second wave is a good thing but it doesn't mean it will happen. I used to work in a hotel near an airport so we had strategies on dealing with terrorist attacks and every now and again we would do a role play amongst the duty manager team. In all of the years it's been there it has never once had a terrorist attack but I can imagine it's still being prepared for just incase.

It's like having breakdown cover on your car, arranging it doesn't mean your car will definitely break down but if it does you are able to handle it.

skeptile · 16/06/2020 22:53

I'm not sure why people come on these threads espousing doom about a second wave, based on the fact there are 'preparations' for it. Even during the first wave, temporary hospitals and morgues were erected. Most of this infrastructure was mercifully unnecessary. Just because preparations are made, doesn't mean such preparations will be needed.

skeptile · 16/06/2020 23:14

Forgot to say, yes mightbealittlebitmad, I agree with you.

nicenames · 17/06/2020 16:46

180 deaths today, compared to 245 same time last week. Big drops!

I follow this Professor on twitter. He is great. The seven day rolling average is now the same as since March.

My philosophy
Sensible precautions, appropriate insurance and then get on with life and having as many adventures as you can.

Lockdown in the beginning made sense whilst we had chance to take stock. I think schools should have been back after Easter as well as distancing reduced to 1 m outside and whilst moving about. 2 m if sitting around or indoors.

By now, I believe, we should just be washing hands well and frequently, avoiding touching our face and avoiding situations where you are breathing or coughing directly in front of someone. IE screens at the supermarket.

I am at high risk of further skin cancer. I use high factor sunscreen and then enjoy the weather. Whilst keeping an eye on my skin.

etc etc - for any risk. I don't want to exist, if I haven't got the freedom to live fully then I'd rather not be here

amicissimma · 17/06/2020 21:42

"I work in healthcare. We are all being prepped for a second wave. "

Ships carry lifeboats. It doesn't mean that sinking is a certainty. Or even very likely.

Think of the safety stuff on an aeroplane.

Ok we occasionally benefit from the oxygen but would we ever fly if we really believed that we were likely to need to escape chutes and life jackets. They are there on every flight on every plane.
