36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

However Wales and new Zealand are very comparable countries in terms of population and density

Huh?

Wales has a population density about 10 times greater than that of NZ.

Not to mention Wales has an open border with very densely populated England. Rather different from NZ which is nearly 5000 km from its closest neighbour. Very poor comparison.

Mascotte · 14/06/2020 21:37

This is great news. Soon we can put all this horribleness behind us and move on to happier days 😊😊

Sandybval · 14/06/2020 21:37

This has to be a joke, right? Confused maybe when schools reopen the geography department would be happy to teach a few bits.

saveeno · 14/06/2020 21:38

There is no message other than everything is fine, restrictions will be lifted etc. Get the economy moving again. Basically do what you like now.

Sorry we know that the virus has been dampened down for sure, but no country has said it has been eliminated.

Complacency, despite the relaxation in countries ahead of us might not be the best thing even for those countries. We shall see.

Hopefully this damned virus will burn itself out. Hopefully.

Defenbaker · 14/06/2020 21:39

It's a sign that the lockdown measures and social distancing have reduced the death toll for this awful disease. We're not out of the woods yet, but I agree there seems to be cause for hope that we're over the worst. We mustn't get complacent though.

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 14/06/2020 21:39

My Dad was of those numbers. Nothing to celebrate😢

Mrskeats · 14/06/2020 21:40

I love how on all these threads everyone knocks the government (and rightly so) but many people here voted for them as discussed on lots of threads.

jasjas1973 · 14/06/2020 21:40

@Jkslays

What massive traffic congestion, pollution, unnecessary airline travel, little time with the family, hours spent commuting, rampant consumerism?

I hope, as we come out of CV lockdown, we all have a little bit more balance to our lives and appreciate what we have a little more... somehow i doubt it!

Pixxie7 · 14/06/2020 21:40

Fingers crossed but numbers are always lower at the weekend.

StealthPolarBear · 14/06/2020 21:41

So sorry x

Sandybval · 14/06/2020 21:41

To be fair there wasn't the greatest range of choice, plus pretty sure people didn't vote with how they might deal with a pandemic in mind.

Willow2017 · 14/06/2020 21:41

There were only 22 deaths in New Zealand in total so no, I can't get any comfort from the fact there have been 36 deaths in the UK today.
Seriously? NZ has almost half the population of London!
Minute population compared to uk.
They handled it differently from the start. Fast and effective unlike here.
There is no comparison in numbers because of a variety of factors.

jasjas1973 · 14/06/2020 21:43

Guessing you might be working from home or something and not looking forward to having to do a full days work again?

Too fucking right! i have no intention of returning to my old working life, VR for me and a new beginning.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/06/2020 21:43

They aren't comparable tea. ONS has 148 people per square Km in Wales & it's 15 people per square Km in NZ according to the govt.nz website (so presumably reliable).

saveeno · 14/06/2020 21:44

Like I said, those affected will carry this forever, but the rest of society will move on. Such is life. Sorry for your troubles.

I'm concerned that complacency is now rampant. But no one in authority really cares anyway, so it is up to the individual to risk assess and go for a drive to test their eyesight I suppose.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/06/2020 21:44

Sorry X posted with loads of people due to slow typing Blush

Mascotte · 14/06/2020 21:44

My life was very nicely balanced before all this and I cannot wait to get back to it!

Colycola · 14/06/2020 21:45

@Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1Flowers I’m so sorry for your loss.

IcedPurple · 14/06/2020 21:45

Bully for you but millions of us quite liked our 'old' lives and can't wait to get back to them.

Musicforsmorks · 14/06/2020 21:47

Love it.
People are getting knickers in a twisty huff because you announce deaths are falling.
How fucking dare you take any joy in that?🤪

MiniMaxi · 14/06/2020 21:49

Surely we have to be at zero cases and closed borders to go back to our normal lives - school and work as normal etc? Otherwise exponential growth takes us back to where we were... (though hopefully the govt wouldn’t be so fucking slow in introducing regional lockdowns etc to stamp it out next time)

IcedPurple · 14/06/2020 21:52

Closed borders isn't 'our normal lives'. Nor will open borders lead to 'exponential growth'. Which is why they are opening up all over Europe right now, and aren't waiting for 'zero cases' to do so.

I always try and make the best of any situation, if you want a return to your old normal, you'll be waiting a long time.

Perhaps try and make the most of the present instead of constantly yearning for a lost past?

Bollss · 14/06/2020 21:52

Well that would be..... Never then?

No thanks!

How long, in your opinion?
