36 COVID fatalities reported today. We are on the way out of this 🌟🌟

36 reported fatalities today (weekend caveat), the lowest number since the day before lockdown was announced. 77 & 115 the last two Sundays for comparison

Mercifully, the human toll of this crisis is easing

I'm hopeful the trends will continue to improve

As reported by Professor Karol Sikora on Twitter

This is amazing news and surely our schools should be able to open as normal come September!

@TSSDNCOP

Just remember how quickly we went from 37 to 1000+

Stay alert. This is not the time to go to Primark.

And yes to this.
vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 20:17

Europe? It consists of many different countries with different rates of infection and lockdown rules, or no lockdown. The UK is in Europe.

Of course, but it's obvious I meant mainland Europe. But then, you knew that anyway Hmm

Of course they have lots of different rules, but they're all at a much more relaxed state than us, even if they have to maintain social distancing, and cases haven't skyrocketed like everyone claimed they would.

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 20:18

@helpfulperson

But Europe still have social distancing in shops, part time schooling, pubs/restaurants outside, etc. it isn't back to normal - its more like a holding position and this is what we will be in until there is a vaccine or it burns itself out.
I'd rather we have to maintain social distancing for a while than just be stuck in lockdown for weeks on end.

At least they can go to the pub, eat meals outside at restaurants and shop - even if distancing measuring are in place. They've also been doing those things for several weeks now with no ill-effect.

lilgreen · 14/06/2020 20:18

It’s a step in the right direction but I’m more concerned with the number of new cases not really dropping.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/06/2020 20:20

That goes for all week days last week btw. Each had lower number than the previous, matching weekday. It's pointless saying about the lag. You need to compare each day to it's counterpart from the previous week/s.

IWillNotNameTheTree · 14/06/2020 20:21

My God nobody is celebrating anyone dying! It IS positive that the lives lost to this virus are coming down.

My grandpa has it. He’s 82, on end of life care, has one working lung and a whole manner of other serious health issues including diabetes. He was only tested because he was due to move from hospital to a care home and it’s procedure, positive result and not a single symptom. He is eating and drinking and more alert than he’s been for months, the virus doesn’t seem to follow any pattern and that’s what’s scary.

Hoping that we are nearing the end, even if it’s the end of the begging. So many people desperate need some relief and to see those numbers coming down.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 14/06/2020 20:23

I don't really understand the 'any number is too high' response - we don't say that about other diseases. If we did we'd ban cars and all sources of air pollution, we'd ban smoking and have food rationing so no one could be obese, we'd lockdown every flu season, vaccines would be compulsory. At some point we have to accept that some level of risk is acceptable so that we can live our lives with a reasonable quality and degree of freedom, just like we do for everything else.

Littlemeadow123 · 14/06/2020 20:25

If anything, we are going to have to be more careful than ever now, if we don't want to go back to square one. As other people have said, it went from 37 to 1000 very quickly the first time.

Mamamia87 · 14/06/2020 20:27

@DominaShantotto 😂😂😂 Agree with you OP, things are heading in the right direction and I think that is something we can be cautiously optimistic about.

Jkslays · 14/06/2020 20:27

@AdalindMeisner

Its Sunday, Monday will follow a similar trend and then Tuesday the numbers climb again to allow for weekend recording. I really hope this is different from every other week since this nightmare began but sadly I doubt it.
Week on week the numbers are still falling

Stay alert. This is not the time to go to Primark.

I hate Primark. I hate shopping. But every time I see a comment like this it makes me want to go for a mooch round Westfield.

Stop policing what people should or shouldn't do. The government have told people they can go to Primark, so why the fuck shouldn't they?

Because the government is run by a bunch clowns who don't give a fuck about any of us.
SisterAgatha · 14/06/2020 20:30

Hardly, the new daily infections are rising.

They’ll contribute to the death figures eventually.

Mumoblue · 14/06/2020 20:32

I do hope the numbers continue to go down.

I really hope this isn't just some pause before an avalanche.

HannahStern · 14/06/2020 20:33

Figures are always so much lower at the weekends as reporting is slower.

Or maybe the testing is just reaching more people. The overwhelming majority will be asymptotic and totally fine.

Todays numbers are lowest since lock down began. People should just accept this is a good thing.

Still lower than last Sunday and week on week.

It's lovely to see the figures falling OP.

Sadly there are some very miserable people out there and Covid- 19 gives them an excuse to moan and they positively seem to love predicting rising figures and seem upset when wrong. Why are some people such miserable tw**s

Oaktree55 · 14/06/2020 20:36

Exactly! the modelling suggests falling deaths till end June then rising again in Uk. People comparing to Europe it is a totally different scenario. A lot of countries mandate masks in public indoors. The UK is in a very different position because this has been so mishandled.
Echobelly · 14/06/2020 20:36

I think this summer will continue to get better - for all the worry about beaches and protests, I don't think these will cause a 'second wave' and there will be a second wave some time later in the year/beginning of next but hopefully it will not be as bad, but with this government, God knows.

How thoughtful of you to share it with others

Willow2017 · 14/06/2020 20:39

Thousands of people die every week in the uk from any number of reasons. There has never been this much obsession over numbers before.
What about the 10,000 people who died from neglect, lack of social interaction and starvation/dehydration due to their dementia in April? 83% more than normal. Not all people with dementia are 'old' either. Where was the outrage over that? Arent they part of the vulnerable groups we are supposed to be protecting? How did that go for them?

Covid could be with us for years, are people really going to wait forever before they want normality to return again?
Celebrating the numbers going down is not celebrating death!
When the hell did it become wrong to celebrate good news and right to twist it into something else?

LisaSimpsonsbff · 14/06/2020 20:40

People comparing to Europe it is a totally different scenario.

What do you mean by 'Europe'? France, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, Spain?

Kez200 · 14/06/2020 20:42

Wait for the weekly rolling average. I dont put it past our Government to give a low number (and add a few to tomorrow) just to give better news on a day like today (after the behaviour in London yesterday)

Jkslays · 14/06/2020 20:45

Thank you - some people are here are so miserable and loving it all. They would have lockdown until 0 deaths per day. There are 67,000,000 in this country and 36 recorded deaths, we don't all sit and watch the rate of suicides each day, accidental deaths each day, murders, cancer deaths yet some are ongoing in obsession with saying too many lock up forever - seriously the rest of us want to work, children need education and we need to live. Hide away if you need or want to but the rest of us cannot forever, we need to pay tax to keep the NHS, education etc going.
