Men driving their female partners car when both travel in it

On my road there are two couples where both the man and woman have their own car, but if they both go out in the woman's car, the man always drives it, also the woman never drives the man's car. One couple is 50s, the other 60s. Does anyone here do the same and would you mind sharing why?

@OhamIreally I had to google the lyrics, knew it sounded familiar Grin

We are late 30's
I dont enjoy driving.
My DH is a professional driver who gets car sick as a passenger.

My car is a normal family car, his is a huge thing because he tows heavy loads regularly.

If we are going anywhere as a family he would drive whichever car is more practical for the situation.

The only time I drive him is if I'm dropping him off somewhere or if he's been drinking.

I'm very happy not to drive.
Not missed my long commute since being furloughed!

Strange how societal expectations have had no effect on anyone at all......

And weird there are so many men who are much safer drivers, get car sick in the passenger seat, can’t fit in the passenger seat etc......but are ok to be driven when they’ve had a beer. Didn’t know alcohol shrinks you, resolves car sickness and transforms your female partner into a better driver.

He’s better at driving on familiar roads - I don’t particularly like it. He is also better at navigating. I don’t really care - I’m happy. I’ve clocked up most of the miles on the car due to commuting for work. In an unfamiliar country he would probably navigate and I drive because I cope better with unpredictability and he has a comparative edge in navigation.

Pommiedownunder · 12/06/2020 03:08

Trixie, it is extraordinary I agree, I let DH drive as my little lady legs can't reach the pedals in my Micra and my teeny-weeny little hands can't cope with the enormous steering wheel - unless I am driving myself to work or to see my friends when I seem to manage just fine.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/06/2020 05:56

I never mind driving but I prefer being driven. Especially when going anywhere new, so I can look up odd place names in my place names book and find out that it was in the Domesday book and meant muddy place with a pigsty.🙂

mylittlesandwich · 12/06/2020 06:20

Eh, DH still hasn't learned to drive so I'm it.

VoldemortsMaid · 12/06/2020 06:22

We usually take turn about. I have a car & DH has a car and we sort of swap cars about.

If we're going anywhere long distance, DH drives - but mainly cause I'm a selfish mare and like to play on my phone or read my kindle while we're travelling! Grin

Millie2013 · 12/06/2020 06:25

It’s the opposite here, I do all the driving because I get horribly travel sick and DP doesn't really enjoy driving anyhow

midnightstar66 · 12/06/2020 06:30

My dm hated driving so would happily let my dad do it whenever possible. She also disliked driving other cars. Personally driving is something to get from a to b whereas others enjoy it so I'm always happy for someone else to do it if they enjoy it

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 12/06/2020 06:39

We are pretty equal really. Dh is a terrible passenger when I drive but I just tell him to shut up and after he had been driving my car and once bumped another car and a second time someone drove into the side of him I point out our accident ratio.

My dad made a remark recently about dh being the driver when we had been on a long journey and got a strip torn off him I do as much driving if not more because dh hasn’t driven my car much and he drives all week at work so I often do it to give him a break.
I also get travel sick so ding driving more comfortable. I will get dh to drive if I just fancy a snooze or to read.

Jengnr · 12/06/2020 06:52

My husband isn’t insured on my car. When we go out together we usually go in his, even though my car is nicer. This is because I like to get pissed and he isn’t bothered.

Aposterhasnoname · 12/06/2020 06:54

DH always drives because if he’s a passenger we’ll not get half a mile before he’s throwing up. He gets the worst car sickness ever.

MayFayre · 12/06/2020 06:59

Opposite here. I get travel sick so don’t like to be a passenger.

LJC1234 · 12/06/2020 07:17

My DH always usually drives if we go out together and if we go out together we take my car . I have the nicer car and he enjoys driving it . I've driven his car about twice . It's horrid.

mangomama91 · 12/06/2020 07:19

I'm one of these couples!
Husband prefers to drive, I prefer not to 😂
I only have an automatic license whereas he has a normal one so if he had a manual I wouldn't be able to drive his

sunflowersandtulips50 · 12/06/2020 07:21

When we had two cars I drove mine and he his. At no point did he think when getting into my car he would be driving- not sure why he would as it's my car.

DustyOwl · 12/06/2020 07:22

We both love driving so we play paper, scissor, stone to figure out who will get to drive.

ScarfLadysBag · 12/06/2020 07:29

I guess the difference for us is that we don't see them as 'his car' and 'my car'. They are both joint. I tend to use one more than the other as it has the dog crate and better car seat but they're both joint expenses and both of us use either, depending on what we are doing.

oohnicevase · 12/06/2020 07:31

@Karwomannghia haha... but it's because it's low and ferocious .. I like looking at it but I don't enjoy the driving of it and he has it because he LOVES driving so it makes no sense for me to drive it .. I like going fast but prefer to be more stable 😂😂

Subeccoo · 12/06/2020 07:32

Urggghhh my husband is a terrible driver, doesn't read signs, hesitates so much, I hate him driving. Fortunately the car belongs to me, he has a work van so we don't use that for trips. And most of the time I drive everywhere. If we're driving a really really long way ie through France, then we'll share but if it is from our home in the North to visit family in the south (about 4 hours) then it's all me.

oohnicevase · 12/06/2020 07:33

I mean obvs I drive my car to work and out and about no problems .. it's just when it comes to days out I like to watch the countryside 🤩🤩

RonSwansonsMustacheComb · 12/06/2020 07:34

We do this. In our 30s. DH gets car sick as passenger but mainly I'm tired and quite happy to have a seat and enjoy the view. We have a car each, and both drive each others but really they're family cars.

Duckfinger · 12/06/2020 07:34

I absolutely hate driving. DH always drives when we go anywhere together.
Regarding sharing cars, well although technically one is his and one is mine we are both insured on both of them and tend to take whichever is on the end of the drive. We aren't really a 'that's mine that's yours' type of family.

Harrykanesrightsock · 12/06/2020 07:35

We both drive each other’s cars and we both drive our own when we are both in. Honestly depends
