Chester zoo is wonderful as is our local Welsh Mountain Zoo, both are in dire straits. We have been fundraising locally for welsh one but it will not be enough.

amicissimma · 03/06/2020 17:05

Mmn. So we no longer have the daily figure for deaths in hospital with a positive test plus a figure for 'all deaths'. Now we just have the figure for 'deaths where Covid-19 was confirmed or suspected' (my bold).

Is this supposed to be science?

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/06/2020 17:06

Me too, @RubberDinghyRapids. Coming to hide back over here for a bit now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/06/2020 17:07

@RubberDinghyRapids

Wandered onto not only a Covid thread... but a SCHOOLS COVID THREAD.

Back here under a blanket, with a glass of wine. Let me know when it's safe to come out Grin

That must be where I am going wrong, I have been on 3 or 4 lately and am a gibbering wreck.
SomewhereEast · 03/06/2020 17:07

Our county has had precisely 21 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the past week,or 6.2 per 100,000 residents. But the kids can't share a pencil at school or We Will All Die

Orangeblossom78 · 03/06/2020 17:08

We have just been told our yr 10s can go in once a week in two weeks, for two hours, mainly to chat about their mental health it seems. Hmm

PickAChew · 03/06/2020 17:08

The schools covid threads are pretty rabid, today. Apparently we all want teachers to die. Not to be entered without chocolate and a skillfully produced patronus.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/06/2020 17:09

Have you seen the Ebola thread?

I think this will be the next epidemic.

sad

I imagine people will say I’m being silly but I’m worried.

SomewhereEast · 03/06/2020 17:09

The Chester Zoo thing is depressing. I think a 'downside' of initiatives such as the furlough scheme is that most people have literally no idea quite how many companies & institutions are basically fucked

Orangeblossom78 · 03/06/2020 17:09

sorry that was a quote. It's in the Congo

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 03/06/2020 17:13

@orangeblossom78 - I’m glad you clarified. I thought we’d lost you!

MaudesMum · 03/06/2020 17:15

No cases in my district (pop 100,00-ish) in the last week, according to that handy Sky chart. But the local press is going on about the R-rate in the South-West as a whole being amongst the highest in the country, so it could go up, so we need to remain alert.

Willow2017 · 03/06/2020 17:25

I took one look at the "teachers as collateral damage" thread then backed out. Supermarket workers are free to wear ppe...yeah right!
it took a fecking month just to get hand gel provided! We have screens that customers ignore and contort themselves so they can talk through the gaps! We are now offered cloth masks but they dont protect us!

I dont want teachers to get sick i just get fed up with the whole "5 kids in a room are going to kill me" but 400 people in a supermarket over the course of the day is fine" being trotted out.

mightbealittlebitmad · 03/06/2020 17:29

Where are they getting 8000 cases from? I'm a bit confused. I've just seen that tonight it was said that there are 8000 cases and it's not going down but the numbers that I've seen are around about 1000.

Bollss · 03/06/2020 17:31

Oh god the school threads. In the words of a dementor I FUCKING DISPAIR. And actually I feel sorry for their children. Because they've got nobody advocating for them not even their own parentsm

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 03/06/2020 17:36

Lots of talk about the 'new normal' in schools come September in Wales. Getting kids used to it now for September.

This does not bode well. DS will not engage with work at home at all. If he's not back ft in sept I give up.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 03/06/2020 17:39

I’m hoping by September things will have calmed down and the new normal will be the old normal with more hand washing

Firefliess · 03/06/2020 17:40

The 8000 a day is the ONS estimate from the random population survey they are running. But the numbers in it aren't really large enough to be very accurate, if you read the report they publish each week there's a huge margin of error (so number could be anything from about 2000 to 20,000) I think they're planning to up the sample size a bit soon. But it does suggest that a lot of people with it aren't being tested and that this is probably because a lot of them have no symptoms. (Whether they are infectious without symptoms is unclear)

enjoyingSun · 03/06/2020 17:48

12 cases last week here - in entire city and I image many of those are in the care homes which were hit badly according to local news.

Several weeks before the schools closed it was much higher and then they were do very little testing.

We've not had much work from the schools at all - I have to stay away from the school threads as they just worried me more as even school doing little are doing a lot more than ours now.

enjoyingSun · 03/06/2020 17:50

I suspect it will become this. I'm hoping if they go back now they stand a chance of getting there for September.

Bollss · 03/06/2020 17:52

I just can't believe this is even happening. I'm going to have to stop engaging in school threads because it is making me really angry.

bakingcupcakes · 03/06/2020 17:52

Good news about welsh schools. I hope the opening goes ahead and the councils/unions don't put a spanner in the works like they have in england. Still not heard anything about ours.

We broke into a local woods today. I felt like a criminal! We used to walk there a lot but haven't been since March because we have to drive to it. It honestly never occurred to me it would be shut because of covid. Anyway, DS wanted to squeeze around the fencing so we did that. There was hardly anyone in there but we did come across 2 couples separately (both in their sixties I'd say) who'd clearly broken in too! We had a really good afternoon. It looked completely different with all the leaves grown and hardly any water in the stream thanks to no rain.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 03/06/2020 17:53

That’s interesting Fireflies, I didn’t realise the 8000 number came with such a big error margin.

Drivingdownthe101 · 03/06/2020 17:56

There is genuinely no point in engaging in schools threads. There is no arguing with a school dementor. Maybe if we all stop bothering arguing with them they’ll just shut up?

justasking111 · 03/06/2020 17:56

Put a comment in a newspaper about schools going back in Wales being great news for the children. Someone responded that they hoped I would chip in for the funerals when the teacher and her family died. Shock
