@RubberDinghyRapids

Sorry, that sounded snippier than intended. Just mean to say it's not about removing rights, but actually a safeguarding mechanism to check that the care home etc is acting in the person's best interests. Pre-Covid a lot of DOLS stipulate making sure the person has access to the outside/family etc.
I know, I might have got the terminology wrong, I’m dyslexic and very bad at remembering correct wording, but I do have experience of it because of my own elderly relatives. I was going to write a longer post about it, I know it’s not about actually removing rights but safeguarding too, but I didn’t want to go off at a tangent I just wanted to point out that people in care homes with dementia no longer can chose to ignore the guidelines. I just worded it badly.

Wandered into the holiday clubs thread. My God, some people can't imagine anyone's circumstances not being the same as their cosy little bubble can they. At least therecwereca few people being sensible.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 09:55

I think what may happen is FOMO might lead to more sending children back; this seems to have happened in some other countries.

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/06/2020 09:57

@Nihiloxica

Also *@Littlebelina*, the more kids back at school the better for those currently excluded from school, because it reasserts that going to school is normal.

Anyone who judges a parent for sending a school age child to school has serious issues.

Very well put. I’ve been trying to articulate this.
Nihiloxica · 05/06/2020 09:59

Far too much Dementoring comes from a reluctance to return to a world with FOMO.

Some people suffer from it so badly that it is preferable to them to know that nobody can do anything than to live knowing that other people are living more interesting lives than they are.

It's pretty gross. I had no idea.

KaronAVyrus · 05/06/2020 10:01

I know I’m being thick but what does FOMO mean?

Drivingdownthe101 · 05/06/2020 10:01

Nihiloxica quite early on in lockdown there was a post on here from someone who said she was happy there was a lockdown because it meant that no one could do the things that she can’t normally do (because of social anxiety). It really struck me.

Orangeblossom78 · 05/06/2020 10:02

There is this idea that the gov might do holiday clubs over the summer, wonder howe that would go. Not for key workers more for deprived areas / children. Run by play schemes. I think it's a fab idea but not sure if it will actually happen

Nihiloxica · 05/06/2020 10:02

FOMO = Fear of Missing Out

KaronAVyrus · 05/06/2020 10:05

Thanks. I knew I was being thick 😂

I do think the worst cases of dementoring is driven by social anxiety. But if they don’t want to go out (ever, seemingly) they don’t have to.

BarkandCheese · 05/06/2020 10:12

The summer play scheme for deprived children is a great idea, but I think people are going to throw up too many roadblocks. Numbers of children allowed, not enough people to run it and dementors swooping in to scare parents off from sending their children will scupper it.

I found this interesting last night. We have one mum on the reception WhatsApp group who has been completely adamant that her children aren’t going back to school, it’s not worth the risk, trying to persuade the rest of us that we should be making the same decision as her, telling us she’s ‘certain’ we shouldn’t be sending our children back. She is usually very active in the community, chair of the PTA, goes in to read with the children etc.
Late last night she put up on instagram post talking about her extreme anxiety about COVID, the fact that she panics when her children touch anything when out on a walk, how she hasn’t been in a supermarket for 11 weeks etc, asking at the end for people to get in touch and let her know if they felt the same. It was almost like she had had a revelation that maybe her response wasn’t proportionate. Unfortunately a lot of people validated her in the comments ‘you’re doing the right thing hun’ type comments. I had to block the post as it was too frustrating.

Grin I know, it took me years to commit it to memory. I would find myself in conversations repeatedly going

"What does it stand for again?" It just wouldn't stick.

Sure but so much the better if you know nobody is allowed out.

Ibake · 05/06/2020 10:28

Take heart. There's quiet rebellions going on in other threads. And not all by familiar user names on here. The one asking if people would risk catching it to get some normality back for example.

littlbrowndog · 05/06/2020 10:31

Oh I can’t wait for Greggs 😂😂

Bloody hello you've just made me mad with jealousy Envy

Round here (Midlands) McDonalds opened for drive through this week. The queue is absolutely mental, because this is the biggest thing to happen locally for weeks and weeks

Pleasedontdothat · 05/06/2020 10:32

ONS figures show that 0.1% of the UK population is currently infected and that cases more than halved in the last two weeks of May. So why face masks, quarantine, 2m nonsense, endless queues? Just why?

Ibake · 05/06/2020 10:35

I read this today, my goodness, did it ever resonate!

This is a good example of “hyper-liberalism” in action. The British philosopher John Gray defined the phenomenon as an extreme liberalism whose adherents have grown so intolerant of opposition, shielded in universities and in workplaces from other views, that they have moved far beyond liberalism to become illiberal. Convinced they are right, they become hysterical on encountering disagreement.

Allflightscancelled · 05/06/2020 10:36

My year 12 daughter seems to have managed to get herself put on a list that means she can go into school if she wants to. I know she was mad to get back to school, but I'd love to know what she's told them to achieve this. Perhaps that we beat her or something.

We don't Confused. Though it can be tempting sometimes Grin

This is what I don’t get. It honestly feels like I’d have more chance of bumping into Lord Lucan than contracting Coronavirus

Allflightscancelled · 05/06/2020 10:57

Nihiloxica Grin

I shall tell her you're impressed (when she gets in from school)

Make sure you're not going to get a call from social services, then offer her hearty congratulations on gaming the system!

Me neither. It feels as though there is a bizarre idea that Covid is like a particularly skilled assassin with a 100% infection rate and fatality rate.
