Daily death total's gone up slightly today (from like 320 to 360 -ish) so expect the calls that it's due to the reopening of schools, the IKEApocalypse and people going to the beach and cries of a second wave incoming in a few minutes as the news spreads.

You may want to prepare a stiff drink in advance because this one is going to bring out the gleeful.

The UK has shrunk a bit! Bloody Americans!😉

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 03/06/2020 15:58

Christ on a bike the welsh are dementoring today!!!

One woman posting on fb in capitals that this should not happen. Thousands are still dying. 🙄🙄

Mrsfrumble · 03/06/2020 16:04

3 cases here, according to the sky news link. That’s 1.1 per 100,000 people. This morning an acquaintance who lives in the same area posted on FB that she was reluctant to go out for walks anymore because other people aren’t wearing masks and keeping their distance. She’s younger than me and healthy. I so wanted to point out that even if infection rates round here were much higher, the chances of her catching it from walking past an infected person in the street are tiny... but I’ve resolved not to get involved on social media (as apart from here, obviously!)

I saw a thread on here where child minders have been told by local councils that they cannot take kids who are at school despite gov guidelines to use sense and 'where possible' not to use them. Its like everyone is making It up as they go along.

Yeah I think no one has a bloody clue anymore. There are 3 (that I know of) local childminders that do my kids' schools (they're at infant and juniors) - one only works termtime whenever her little snookums (a right royal brat - unfortunately my kid's in the same class) isn't around needing her undivided attention who has disappeared off the radar at the moment; another I haven't seen but the third has been doing a couple of drop offs every day I've been there (and is lovely).

359. And as of 1st June we decided to start broadening the data set for death statistics. So it's exactly what you'd expect to see, really.... an increase in numbers from 1st June to include Pillar 2 tests. It will bring out - as usual - the statistically illiterate.
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 03/06/2020 16:14

There hasn't been more than one death a day in my area since 13th of May. Most days there are zero. And that's in spite of being in an area with an ageing population. 43.8 deaths per 100,000 in total, 39 in actuality.

Once you factor in the people who will have been recorded as dying of this without it actually being the cause of death, this is just insane.

But surely this is finally the start of the fabled VE Day spike, which must be due to happen any day now...

They'll claim it's VE day, IKEA, shit parties on the beaches etc. Anything they don't agree with basically - if they could nail it on fruit shoots they would!
enjoyingSun · 03/06/2020 16:24

I've been in the queue for both school drop offs next to one of the local childminders dropping off her wards...

One a family member had lined up decided to do school drop off and picks up for existing kids but not take younger ones till September.

The gap is going to be filled by older family members as they can't not work.

BarkandCheese · 03/06/2020 16:26

I’ve lost count of the weeks, is it three or four weeks this Friday since VE Day? We should be right in the thick of the spike by now though if we were ever going to get one, but so far nothing.

There’s a letter from the head of children’s services today on our council website talking about the return to school in August. Basic gist is “we know this will cause problems for parents but tough shit”. I don’t blame the council, I do blame the Scottish government. Apparently half the deaths in Scotland occurred in care homes (which is awful, but separate to the community spread), so for around 2000 people dead in a population of 5 million, most of them over 75, our kids have to put up with this rubbish? Since when was children’s education of such little importance?

countrygirl99 · 03/06/2020 16:27

Does anyone publish a 7 day rolling average. That would iron out the weekend troughs and Tuesday/Wednesday peaks.

Pleasedontdothat · 03/06/2020 16:28

@BarkandCheese 4 weeks this Friday - by rights we should be needing to open temporary morgues by now ...

Spudlet · 03/06/2020 16:28

We’re getting a maximum of 2 new cases a day in our area - we’re fairly sparsely populated as we’re very rural, but there are a fair few care homes and our main town is unfortunately very deprived and not what you’d call a beacon of good health, sadly. Lots of retirement flats, bungalows and sheltered housing places around as well.

When you take that into account, it’s a pretty low number of cases imo. It works out at about one case per 23,000 people in the last week...

Dowser · 03/06/2020 16:29

We’ve had 6 cases Last week....pop 93000
There’s a big problem with the courier system re tests
Son and family feeling well couldn’t get a courier slot until mid June 😱
Hasn’t bothered

Arcadia · 03/06/2020 16:34

@countrygirl99 yes I've noticed this now on Worldometer - if you highlight a box you can get 3 day and 7 day rolling averages

Starmer has blotted his copybook for me today saying lockdown shouldn't be eased yet - I know confidence in the government is low and under normal circumstances I wouldn't blame him for going for political gain but I think based on current figures he is being ridiculous.

Weedsnseeds1 · 03/06/2020 16:37

We have the worrying headline that coronavirus cases (not deaths) have "almost doubled since 30th April" from 231 to 450.
As over 100 staff and at least 62 patients have tested positive at Weston Hospital, I don't think I need worry too much that there is a superspreader around every corner.

RubberDinghyRapids · 03/06/2020 16:56

Wandered onto not only a Covid thread... but a SCHOOLS COVID THREAD.

Back here under a blanket, with a glass of wine. Let me know when it's safe to come out Grin

Dowser · 03/06/2020 16:57

I really feel for people shielding relying on Agency carers.
They are doing a cracking job but no way are those vulnerable people not coming into contact with people whO are trying to live their lives as normal as possible and still provide for their families.
Course if carers are washing hands and wearing full ppe, whhich my son does..they should be safe
There’s always that risk though

Nooo, don’t do that, those threads will suck your soul out.

An evil part of me wants to start the thread asking what happened to the VE Day apocalypse which the doom mongers predicted, but I know it would be a huge mistake.
