Mine was Claire,it was on the radio when I was born.
Luckily I wasn't called it as there where loads of them about.

Almost Brooke, but surname is also Br- so they said it would have been a mouthful. I would have been okay with that!

Apparently Kimberly was also a contender. I don't think I'd have made a very good Kimberly!

EBearhug · 28/05/2020 13:31

Gertrude, after a great aunt. Fortunately, they didn't in the end.

My sister was always going to be Charles, right up to the point she was born and turned out not to be a boy after all. My parents had no girls' names ready, they had been so convinced she was going to be a boy.

Buyitinbamboo · 28/05/2020 13:40

Mum wanted to call me Constance
Dad wanted Porche

They are quite different people, it didn't last long!

NietzschePeachPearPlum · 28/05/2020 13:40

Emma - and I have always wished they had chosen it as I never really liked my name. My name has caused me a lot of grief in the past 😔

Me too! I’ve always hated my name, and when I saw an Emma on telly when I was a child I thought “I’d like that name!” (it wasn’t common amongst my peer group in 70’s Scotland).
A couple of years ago my mum told me that she couldn’t decide between my horrible name and Emma. My horrible name won 😞.

strawbmilk · 28/05/2020 13:47

Melanie
Before I was born some one told my mum they hated it. I'm grateful to that person whoever they are as I love my name and not something you would expect from my traditional parents
I do wonder what my children will think of their names and if they prefer any of our other choices or be massively relieved

00deed1988 · 28/05/2020 13:49

Alana - Something about it translating to little darling! I like my name so glad it wasn't chosen although I don't mind the name!

ElectricTonight · 28/05/2020 13:59

Jasmine, I much prefer my actual name!

grumpyorange · 28/05/2020 14:02

Rebecca

vampirethriller · 28/05/2020 14:03

Thirza or Zillah. Samuel if I was a boy. They actually named me after a dog they knew.

Joffrey · 28/05/2020 14:04

My parents say their girl name was always their first choice and it's my name but if I had been a boy I would have been called Andrew. My brother was born 3 years later and they'd gone off it so hes called something else.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 28/05/2020 14:04

Mhairi, it's my middle name instead.

HollysBush · 28/05/2020 14:07

Pamela. There's a cassette tape somewhere with my mum and her sister reading out the list of names, with surname, and having a giggle. It's so sweet.

LightDrizzle · 28/05/2020 14:07

Giselle! I'm not French and I couldn't have carried it off.
I'm not keen on my actual name, poor mum chose an unusual one that became popular and "naff" about 16 years later. Fortunately I think she was oblivious and thought she'd done good.

WitsEnding · 28/05/2020 14:11

My mother really likes my names and used them for her dolls and cat as well as her eldest. There was no alternative even considered.

Doesn’t make me feel special.

Holymolymackerel · 28/05/2020 14:13

I was to be called Melanie but my aunt said reminded her of a classmate that was always sickly and frail so I was named after an actress who my mum watched on telly while waiting for me to be born.

Minai · 28/05/2020 14:13

Jemima. Which I much prefer to my very boring 80’s name!

Eminybob · 28/05/2020 14:18

Louisa. But my dad is dyslexic and would have struggled spelling it. So I became Emma (although he sometimes addresses my birthday cards to Emam Grin
I’ve grew up wishing I was Louisa as every other bloody girl in my school was Emma. Even now I’m never the only one in work, groups etc.

If I were a boy I would have been called Gareth Shock

Soubriquet · 28/05/2020 14:19

Anna-Maria

After both grandmothers (Anne and Marie)

My mum was 18 so..

Luckily I wasn’t called that. Instead I was named after a celebrity my dad had a crush on at the time HmmGrin

Mrsjayy · 28/05/2020 14:21

Tina not even Christina just Tina thankfully it was changed last minute it sounds like a noise and not an actual name !

Coffeeislife04 · 28/05/2020 14:23

Earl If I had been a boy.

Livpool · 28/05/2020 14:23

Pamela but my mum refused!

Echobelly · 28/05/2020 14:25

Juliet - but my parents changed the order round so it is now my middle name. And I'm relieved because if you say 'Juliet' people make stupid comments about Romeo!

saywhatwhatnow · 28/05/2020 14:25

Porsche (dads choice) or Ashleigh (mums choice). Thankfully they compromised on my (floral) name which I quite like, and I'm not named after a car.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 28/05/2020 14:26

@MyBlueMoonbeam I was nearly Dorcas Cora Hmm

Instead I'm complicated-Gaelic-first-name made-up-middle-name

jay55 · 28/05/2020 14:26

Nicholas, but I turned out a girl.
