Mine was Claire,it was on the radio when I was born.
Luckily I wasn't called it as there where loads of them about.

Hugo

Thank fuck I was a girl as not sure it would've done me any favours at a state school in Glasgow. Instead got a very standard late 60s girls name that has always blended in very well!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 28/05/2020 22:15

My dad wanted to call me Sarah after his nan. My mum wasn't keen so named me after her great aunt instead. If I had been a boy I would have been Paul Thomas. My sister was nearly Natasha or Natalie but my parents hated the shortened versions Nat and Tash. So she got a really pretty French name instead.

ZiggZagg · 28/05/2020 22:16

It was a toss up between Corinne, Rachael and Nadia... I got called none of these! But I do love my name, always get compliments that I sound like a movie star Grin

mathanxiety · 28/05/2020 22:16

I ended up with a name my aunt came up with.

Notredamn · 28/05/2020 22:17

It was to be the name my paternal grandma would've named a daughter if she'd have had one (she had all boys): Jonquil. But in the end my mum didn't go along with her MIL's wants!

Ltdannygreen · 28/05/2020 22:20

Whitney 🤦🏼‍♀️ My mum couldn’t decide on a name and so my who was obsessed with Whitney Houston suggested it and my mum almost chose but I am now names after my great grandmother instead.

thunderthighsohwoe · 28/05/2020 22:20

Natalie, or Matthew if a boy. One of my sisters was going to be Timothy 😂

topcat2014 · 28/05/2020 22:25

Simon,

I imagine him as the alter ego - who lead the cooler life (ie not an accountant like me)

CoffeeRunner · 28/05/2020 22:33

My GM wanted me to be called Selina Lucy, as I was born on the birthday of her favourite Aunt Lena (full name Selina Lucy).

My parents intended to call me Rachael Elizabeth or Peter Jon. I ended up with Emma Louise.

MattBerrysHair · 28/05/2020 22:33

If df had had his way I'd be called Roisin, which is lovely pronounced properly. My West Yorkshire born df pronounces it ruhSHEEEEEEEN!

Hellhath · 28/05/2020 22:33

I was going to be Adele but they decided on Helen instead. I like my name now but thought it was so staid and boring growing up. Adele was much more unusual and exciting to me.
It could have been worse, if I was a boy I would have been Graham.

Timeandtune · 28/05/2020 22:35

Mum wanted to call me Francesca. In 1959 in Scotland that would have been very exotic. They settled for something plain, Scottish and unable to be shortened. I am very glad.

beachcomber70 · 28/05/2020 23:08

Michael...but I was a girl

PartiallyStars · 28/05/2020 23:12

Danielle. No idea why, it is nothing like the name I have which is often described as a timeless classic on the name boards. I am so pleased they didn’t, it would not have suited me and would have been awful in an Essex accent.

Vix20678 · 28/05/2020 23:19

If I'd been a boy...Bernard.

nildesparandum · 28/05/2020 23:21

I was nearly Margaret, but my DM had a friend who had had a daughter born just before me and had called her Margaret (I was born in the mid 1940s and it was a very popular name then). So my dad's mother when she heard of this chose a name for me, it was the name of a baby sister of hers who had died shortly after birth.
I would not have minded being Margaret, but as I previously said there were loads with that name then.In my class at school there were three girls called Margaret Rose after Princess Margaret who was born 12 years previously

Jemimatheragdoll · 28/05/2020 23:34

Colin, would like to say I dodged a bullet as I'm a girl but was given a very typical awful mid 60's name in any event

walkingchuckydoll · 28/05/2020 23:42

Eric. Luckily I was born a girl. For girls names they could only compromise on one, so that is what they called me.

HouseinLincs · 28/05/2020 23:45

Rosalee..🤦‍♀️

Fifthtimelucky · 29/05/2020 00:08

If I had a boy I would apparently have been Timothy.

CoRhona · 29/05/2020 01:41

Rosie. Prefer what they did name me Wink

Coffeecak3 · 29/05/2020 02:16

@PartiallyStars I have a niece called Danielle and her parents pronounce it
Dan-yell in a SE accent. Grim.

My Great aunt wanted my parents to name me Lily after my dead gm. My dm refused, thank goodness as it was old fashioned at the time. My dm then chose my first name and my df chose my middle name and my df refused to use my first name so my dm gave up and my middle name is what was used and I do prefer it.

howlatthetrees · 29/05/2020 02:20

Megan or Charlie, Daniel if I was a boy

Earnsomething · 29/05/2020 02:20

I found a new baby card my aunt, who was 9yo at the time, sent to my parents when I was born. She said "I hope you call the baby Joan". I'm really not old enough to be a Joan.

CherrySpritz · 29/05/2020 02:21

Cynthia. Apologies to all Cynthias but I’m so glad my parents went with their alternative choice.
