Germany the dementors dream country is having big drama with some (left wing) areas reopening totally, even allowing big gatherings etc, while more right wing areas still being stricter, Merkel is saying it might need to go back if gets out of control as a whole..

interesting to see as is not a right / left wing thing there at all in fact the opposite...

HauntedGoatFart · 25/05/2020 08:54

I don't think that will hold when you look at the global picture though, @Drivingdownthe101. It will take a few years for the data to be clear and comparable, and a lot of study. But we will be able to see if locking down completely materially affected outcomes by comparing countries. It will be very hard, psychologically, for people to walk it back and accept that it may have been a mistake, but I do think that many, many researchers will ask the question. You're right that it can be really hard to know what would have happened though, you see the same effect with birth interventions and screening programmes etc.

DominaShantotto · 25/05/2020 08:55

I want to wander around fucking Tesco without having to queue to get in and follow the fucking one-way system. I want to just wake up, decide to bake, take the kids with me to pick up ingredients - go in, spend £50 on homeware when I just went in to pick up flour, and then grab a Costa from the in-store one upstairs.

And I want a McMuffin and Cheesy Bacon Flatbread. Today I've decided I'm going to get a Subway for lunch. I think it's important to support the businesses that have been courageous enough to open up!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 25/05/2020 08:55

@TheGreatWave
"Shops opening is good, but I want to go to a shop and not have to queue outside, or spend ages going up and down aisles I don't want to get to the one I do. I want to go to the shops without a back drop of hassle."
This! With bells on.
I did the weekly shop yesterday.
Queue for 25 mins to get in, then they didnt have some of the stuff I needed so had to go to another shop and queue 40 mins to get in there. An hour of my life wasted, it's so depressing.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/05/2020 08:56

There’s another thread running about what schools will look like in September. Loads of people saying ‘we won’t be able to manage 2m distancing on buses’ etc. Don’t people realise that it’s highly unlikely we’ll still have to stay 2m from everyone in September?! It’s 3 months away. Community transmission is currently low. It will hopefully get lower.
I think people think everything is going to stay exactly as it is now, indefinitely!

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 25/05/2020 08:56

Giving them this pretext for their behaviour was risky, because they are not going to give it up without a fight

Yes! Hence why people were reporting people who weren't actually breaking the law, they just weren't living up to the extreme puritanical standards they just made up in their head! They arent going to let go of this easily once lockdown has been relaxed. I suspect theyre enjoying it too much to just let go. They'll still be tattling and huffing and puffing about people's behaviour even if it isnt against guidelines or the law. They are loving this way too much to just let go of it.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/05/2020 08:56

Driving the spa and baths make lots of money locally but both very crowded and can imagine the steamy spa which is on different levels and steamy etc would not be conducive to this at all...not sure what will happen there.. but yes would be lovely do go for a dip- they have a small cross bath for residents to use which is outside, for half price. Sad

Orangeblossom78 · 25/05/2020 08:57

Yes the 2m thing will mean pubs will find it very hard to reopen too it seems WHO just say 1m (or 1.5?) anyway most countries say that too except us and Spain where it is 2m.

In Holland think it is 1.5m

longestlurkerever · 25/05/2020 08:58

Nihiloxica this, totally! I inadvisedly had a precis of this conversation with mil when she started going on about all these people breaking the rules. To be fair she mostly agreed with me - think she had just been temporarily brainwashed. She's driving 2 hours tomorrow for an illegal walk around a country park near coventry, 2ms apart from her grandchildren, the murderer.

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/05/2020 09:01

Urgh I hate a shitty shopping experience yesterday. Wanted to go to The Range to get some storage for all the DC’s craft shit that has built up over lockdown. Got there half an hour before it opened and there was already a queue. Got barked at by a woman at the door to come and have my hands ‘sprayed’. The storage boxes were really high up with a sign saying ‘ask a member of staff for help’, except there were no staff to be seen, they were all cowering away from people as if they were lepers. Couldnt stop and browse anything as there were queues of people behind me huffing to get past. Ended up spending £89 and I didn’t even get the storage boxes.
Then DH text asking me to stop at the Co-Op on the way home for apple sauce. Queued 40 mins to get in there. Got stuck at the checkout by a very elderly man doing his weekly shop who just wanted to chat to the checkout assistant (don’t blame him to be fair, probably the only interaction he gets all week). That took another 20 mins. Spent another £50 on stuff to cheer me up, like gin and haribo.
Took all morning!!

Orangeblossom78 · 25/05/2020 09:01

Yes I agree, it is not the rules but their interpretation. and also a weird moral judgement as well.

Like with the crisps on a bench or picnic on a walk- I got lots of comments about not needing to eat and could wait till got home. It's all a lot of judgemental moral nonsense at times which isn't about the risk of giving the others the virus but about being morally superior.

Mascotte · 25/05/2020 09:02

@Nihiloxica yes, this reason to justify strict state control of the populace and their doings is a gift to the SNP, who are already very controlling. Questioning is not allowed. I really hope other people are secretly fucked off with it too.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/05/2020 09:03

Oh Driving that sounds awful. Hope you can relax a bit now.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 25/05/2020 09:03

With regard to social distancing, does anyone else think that (even if it stays in place) it will just become more and more perfunctory until it just stops being a thing?

In my local Asda everyone dutifully puts on hand gel then just gets on with it. Even the queue guy just waved everyone through and isn't bothered at all.I think that might be what happens socially too.(and already is to a decent extent).

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/05/2020 09:03

Yes Orangeblossom78 I remember a poster saying in all seriousness that it was ok to exercise on park benches, as that was virtuous, but not ok to eat crisps on park benches as that wasn’t virtuous.

Orangeblossom78 · 25/05/2020 09:05

Yes the crisps on a bench etc - hopefully we have moved on a little from that but I'm not sure. I got lots of abuse over having a picnic as well which actually really upset me before I found these threads. It was the first time out in ages and had been such a nice day

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/05/2020 09:06

I think most people have moved on from it, but there are still some hardcore ‘stay the fuck at home’ posters on here.

glotterbug · 25/05/2020 09:08

@LivinLaVidaLoki hope Boris does allow more social contacts soon, I'm in Wales but hoping and hoping Mark Drakeford will follow suit! Think we are due an update Tuesday or Thursday.

BogRollBOGOF · 25/05/2020 09:08

Crisps on a bench should have gone down in classics.

I got Nakd on a bench. Is that virtuous for being vegan and fruit and nuts? Or is it murder for leaving nut traces to kill the next person with allergies?

Drivingdownthe101 · 25/05/2020 09:10

In 5 years time, when people read back on some of the threads from this period, they’ll think the world had gone completely mad.
And they’d be right!

SockYarn · 25/05/2020 09:11

i do love a charity shop browse.

Oh me too, @longestlurkerever. I volunteer in one of the big chains and come home with so many bargains. I love the quirkiness, the fact you can pick up stuff you won't find elsewhere. I am not a fast fashion fan, would much rather have good quality second hand. But it's the homewares and craft stuff which I really love.

My only worry is that when we go back we won't be able to open anything like full time as so many of our volunteers are over 70 and probably won't want to come back. Teenage DS volunteers too, so it might just be the paid manager, me and him for the summer.... And I'm concerned that everyone's been having massive clear outs during lockdown and we're going to be deluged!

Sadie789 · 25/05/2020 09:11

@Mascotte I’m very fucked off with it. Like you I hope we are the silent majority.

longestlurkerever · 25/05/2020 09:11

I lurked on the crisps on a park bench thread, head in hands. Then went and drank metaphorical gin. To be honest I've been following the rules fairly strictly but i can't bear the curtain twitching busy bodiness of this country at the best of times. I once had to move house because a neighbour told me off for putting my lolly stick in the odd numbered bin rather than walking all the way round the back to the bin for the even numbered flats. He'd even come out of his flat and followed me along the street. Shock

littlbrowndog · 25/05/2020 09:12

I think in Scotland we are getting arsed off with the RULES

I can’t think of anyone I have spoke to that thinks that sturgeon is doing the right thing.

We just feel it’s like snp like controlling us.

Rember when we had the named person for every child in Scotland. Our government didn’t trust parents to bring up their kids 🤦‍♀️

But anyway have some sprees to go on today and it’s sunny 😎

BogRollBOGOF · 25/05/2020 09:12

I'm wanting to meet people, but it's working out who is reasonably close, who isn't too overworked and who is likely not to be heavily offended.

Unilever is struugling to keep up with demand on icecream. The chap DH was talking to was mystified why demand was so high and DH said it was people wanting treats to feel good. They're having to shift packaging to multipacks for supermarkets too.
