@Cattermole
That's what I'm pinning my hopes on. It is a massive event and must cost a fortune to put on, so financial reasons are what I hope it's been cancelled for. There are already people saying that they hope many more events are cancelled too.
It's as though these people really thrive on being miserable. I suppose that's where the dementor thing comes in, but Christ alive!

duckme · 20/05/2020 16:00

I'm still clinging on for dear life to the hope that our Florida trio goes ahead in August. I know it's unlikely but I'm sick of people saying that those 'who chose a holiday over the lives of their family' are disgusting.
I've even booked a couple of trips in this country on booking.Com (no deposit to pay and no cancellation fee) as a back up. Italy are opening their borders soon, so if the FCO say we can fly again, I'm bloody going on holiday somewhere.

Springersrock · 20/05/2020 16:04

All our big carnivals and big events have been cancelled too.

We have some big sailing events, a big festival and lots of smaller ones

I feel quite sad about it. I love the festival, and we always go out on the piss for one of the big sailing events

FB dementors are clamouring for announcements of cancellations, most of them hate the festival anyway, don’t like the sailing event and are just miserable buggers anyway. They’re rubbing their hands with glee at the moment.

I guess they take such a huge amount of organising that they’re cancelling now, rather than risk having to cancel nearer the time

DominaShantotto · 20/05/2020 16:12

Well just endured governors - lots of praise for the head who has politically "ranted" in a way I consider pushing the line a few times and the usual group getting everything they desire. I raised the digital divide and kids' mental health... shot down.

Think there's no hope of anything beyond nursery/reception part-time returning in our school - the grudging keyworker and vulnerable provision was quite an awkward undercurrent as mine falls into vulnerable now as not coping at all.

And it's the Two Minute Hate - sorry NHS Clap tomorrow which seems to loom over my entire week.

GeraltOfRivia · 20/05/2020 16:12

Our local candidate has posted "his opinion" that schools shouldn't open until "the r is 0.5 for 3 weeks straight". I've private messaged him asking for the scientific research on which he's based his post.

iamapixie · 20/05/2020 16:12

Just back to these sensible threads so probably this is too late to be helpful, but:
Dentists: it's the BDA advising not opening. A few are ignoring the advice. Internet search or even post on SM to find out if there is one near u.
Also they will prescribe antibiotics. DP had toothache - antibiotics prescribed over the phone by the dentist - worked because it can be an infection causing swelling against the nerves.
Physios: again (we've been in the wars in our house) they are re-opening. Our local one opened on Monday, triaging over the phone but u can go if they decide you need it + they can do video consults.

midwestsummer · 20/05/2020 16:14

Social work has several c19 issues, vulnerable dc who can't be seen because of health vulnerabilities but I am really concerned about other vulnerabilities.
Distance visiting in the garden is safe for some dc but not great for confidentiality.
All court stuff has been suspended in our bit of the USA, so adoptions not happening, nothing moving through the system.
Reporting is massively down but only because people aren't seeing the dc, not because abuse has stopped, it has probably increased.
Child protection visits are still happening but nothing below that level.

midwestsummer · 20/05/2020 16:17

The firework displays can be very expensive the LA's are going to be as broke as central government when this is over.
Pandemics are very costly, cancellation maybe a budget thing as much as anything else.

BarkandCheese · 20/05/2020 16:20

I’m in a bit of a bind with the dentist at the moment. Last time DD went the dentist gave her a prescription for high fluoride toothpaste because some of her enamel hasn’t formed properly. He told me to phone them when she ran out and he’d sort out a second prescription. Of course she’s about to run out now, but the surgery is closed with nothing but a recorded message about what to do if you need emergency treatment. I’m not going to call the emergency number because it’s not an emergency, I don’t need to see a dentist I just need a prescription. I know it’s not important or life or death, but it’s another little thing on the pile along with DD’s overdue eye test and my overdue smear.

TheGreatWave · 20/05/2020 16:25

Why is there almost glee in figures rising? (Local) And also an undercurrent that if anyone dies it is their own fault.

I see we have a new Dementor in Chief in the form of Dr Andrea Ammon.

Willow2017 · 20/05/2020 16:33

Apparently Scotland is shut for the rest of the year! Pah! Gutted about the Edinburgh Festival. Always go up then and just take in the vibes and see the street performers etc with ds2. I understand why but still gutted. I expect the Xmas market will be off too another nice day out. Hoping next missive from Her Maj NS will be better and restrictions will lift a bit. Not that you would know it here. People just being sensible but getting on with life and risk assessing for themselves. All very calm a few people out and about but no overcrowding, keeping distance etc. Oh speak of the devil...public infomercial from scottish gov just on tv they just realised loss of taste or smell is a sign of Cv!
Apparently 8k people have applied for the tracing app but nobody has been contacted yet! I am so proud of our proactive gov people are praising to the heights on here.🤣🤣

DominaShantotto · 20/05/2020 16:37

Apparently Scotland is shut for the rest of the year!

Commiserations to the Scots - but it DOES mean I don't have to endure going to see my mother-in-law. Every cloud and all of that!

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/05/2020 16:44

Maudsmum and Trappedsincesundaymorn you must both be local to me. I'm going to miss carnival this year, but I understand why they can't take place. Pretty certain squibs would eradicate all known viruses though!
I'm roasting a chicken and making potato salad and as soon as OH gets home, I'm driving over to one of the lakes for a picnic.

ilovecardigans · 20/05/2020 16:45

You are norty @DominaShantotto! Wink

Willow2017 · 20/05/2020 16:45

DominaShantotto
😂😂 good excuse make the most of it

TitianaTitsling · 20/05/2020 16:47

I would also happily pay for block/mute poster function!

duckme · 20/05/2020 16:51

@DominaShantotto
The bloody clap! My iron fell on my carpet a few weeks ago while I was, begrudgingly clapping. So now I have a lovely deep iron mark in my carpet until the insurers are allowed out to check to see if it is, indeed, ruined.
Every Thursday is a now a kick in the tits.

I'm a few miles from a certain farm where lots of people go to listen to some music....certainly not going to miss that this year....all the private helicopters flying over the house every 15 minutes drives me insane.

ilovecardigans · 20/05/2020 16:53

Posters near Seaham - the pod of Orcas recently spotted near Holy Island has been spotted off the coast at Seaham! I assume it's the same pod and it's moving south down the east coast.

DominaShantotto · 20/05/2020 16:57

I don't clap and I've also removed the rainbows from the windows as a protest against how the kids' gestures to other children have been hijacked by the Corona Cult.

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 17:01

Urgh. Just had an email to say our flights to Spain in July are cancelled. Knew it was coming but still. Would have been our first holiday in 3 years.

KaronAVyrus · 20/05/2020 17:04

I would die a happy woman if I could see Orcas in the wild.

Sorry about your flights driving. I was gutted about losing a long planned for holiday. Flowers

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/05/2020 17:04

Trappedsincesundaymorn I understand your sentiments!
Just seen that Bristol Water have closed all the lakeside parking. Hmmm. Might have to be the levels for a picnic then.

I've been to the little city with the big cathedral and sat by the moat around the Bishops Palace watching the swans today' bloody lovely it was too.
