Just in case anyone was wondering about the withdrawn post, it was me - I realised after I'd said it that I'd just pretty much described my DH and where I live. Doh!

MrsLangOnionsMcWeetabix · 20/05/2020 14:35

On my murdering spree yesterday (in a small Scottish city) Home Bargains was a complete free for all, The Range had a queue outside but no organisation at the tills and Tesco had a much better entry/exit system. Hardly anyone wearing masks but no dementors that I encountered.

CruCru · 20/05/2020 14:36

Hi all

I must admit that I've bought us all ski buffs to use as masks as I think there is a chance the bus drivers won't let us on without them.

My husband has a beard (so a mask is not going to work unless he shaves a load off) and my children will need smaller masks than me and my husband. Then, when this is over, we can just wear the buffs as scarves in winter (or even whenever we are next able to go skiing) so they won't go to waste.

DrearyWallAntler · 20/05/2020 14:38

Unless we have a significant change to the death rate in a month or so we will be reporting fewer than 100 deaths a day on the rolling average. (which would roughly coincide with when the government wants to open shops)

What will the dementors do then?

Hard to argue that its not safe.

ikeairgin · 20/05/2020 14:40

Well I've just got back from work (supermarket) and we've been selling such a lot of bbq briquettes and burgers. We only allow 25 customers in the shop at any time so there is usually plenty of space and people seem to get their shopping done quite quickly.

I have two older boys, one's just been told that he's passed his first year of college based on one completed project (BTEC) and won't be back in until September ....that means that he will have been off for a total of 8 months - if that had been him a year/two years ago we wouldn't have been able to get him back due to mh / SpLD reasons. The other has been slumming it in a HMO with a friend as he's been furloughed for 4 months on full pay (co making up the difference) Also retail.

I'm kind of envious and then again not. But on days like today, well I guess we all would like to be pottering about in the sun. We don't have a car, otherwise I'd be driving to the coast or at least some hills.

Still I cycled back into town on my bike (3 miles) I'm sure I did for at least a rugby team ..... and a fecking car nearly did for me. I would welcome a re-think on the car/bike/public transport emphasis. Those of us on bikes (as less risky overall) would quite like not to be a covid-19 additional death due to being squashed by a car.

I definately see a big divide opening up between friends that have been paid to wfh/be furloughed and friends who are still out there at the coalface, like social workers in how much risk should be taken, in general.

Anyway - I'm going to have a snooze in the garden before breaking out our bbq.

@justasking111
"My OH is going mental at second DIL who takes the government shilling"

He's going mental at her because she's working from home? And still being paid for her work? Not sure I follow

duckme · 20/05/2020 14:59

Can I join please?
My local council have just cancelled one of their main yearly events and I'm about to lose it.
They've cancelled their firework display. I can't live like this until after bloody bonfire night.

Willitneverend · 20/05/2020 15:06

I'm furloughed, DH has two jobs, oneself employed, one public sector. I really hate it. I think a lot of folk working for smaller companies realise that this cant go on forever.

TheGreatWave · 20/05/2020 15:12

What will the dementors do then?

But, but, but, the death rate is only low because of lockdown (at this point they can ignore all the rule breakers, VE day celebrations, conga lines etc) and it just means there will be a 2nd wave. And then about vaccines or something.

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 20/05/2020 15:14

Their firework display duckme?? That's insane!

enjoyingSun · 20/05/2020 15:15

I had a look at amazon for ski buffs - found quite a few Scarf Bandanas Neck Gaiter with cardon filters that look good. If we don't get on with home made masks - could be another more versatile option.

I'm not sure how I'd get on long term with a mask - I have asthma but I think on a bus or train or short shopping trip in shop could probably cope.

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 15:16

My mum works at the local drs surgery. She says she has spent the majority of the past 2 weeks dealing with requests for sick notes from people who have been asked to go back to work and don’t want to due to anxiety.
I know anxiety is real. I know it’s horrible. But being anxious about going back to work surely isn’t a reason not to go back to work? And if they’re anxious about it now, how will they feel in 3 months time when they’ve spent even longer sitting at home getting worked up?

ikeairgin · 20/05/2020 15:16

Call me cynical but I recon a lot of £££ things that councils do (like fireworks) will get binned and blamed on covid-19

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 15:18

As an aside, I reckon I’d pay for Mumsnet if there was a ‘block poster’ function. Some of the chief dementors names make my heart sink when I read them. I just know it’s going to be a post of doom.

ikeairgin · 20/05/2020 15:19

I can believe that Drivingdownthe101.

I've been signed off long term sick and it's hard to get back in the saddle. But they can't all be off, can they?

Cattermole · 20/05/2020 15:19

@KatsutheClockworkOctopus and @duckme there are a load of the events in my hobby being cancelled for later this year, I don't think it's because they don't think they will be able to take place, I think it's because they need to be putting things in place and paying for things (like toilets Grin) now and nobody is able to commit to that planning at this stage. I suspect they're just erring on the side of caution because otherwise they might lose a lot of money in deposits etc if things change.

ikeairgin · 20/05/2020 15:20

off sick .... in the distant past with PTSD and PND, sorry didn't make that clear

KaronAVyrus · 20/05/2020 15:22

Yy I would happily pay for a block poster function.

Mascotte · 20/05/2020 15:24

@duckme I'm getting really fed up of all fun being cancelled for the whole year. It's really depressing.

@Cattermole I can see the logic there though. But need something to look forward to.

Drivingdownthe101 · 20/05/2020 15:25

Yeah it does just feel like a blanket ‘fun cancellation’ policy doesn’t it?
A dementors dream.

MaudesMum · 20/05/2020 15:27

Down in Somerset, the enormous carnivals that take place in November have already been cancelled. The carnivals involve months of preparation by local carnival clubs (making the floats and the costumes), so if they were cancelled nearer the time all that effort would be wasted. It's a real shame, but understandable in the circs.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 20/05/2020 15:35

MaudesMum

FiL is a member of one of the bigger carnival clubs. He's more annoyed at the lack of all the social events than the cancelled cart building and carnivals....but that was probably because he was the one that had to screw in 1500 light bulbs last year many of which had to be replaced each time because the wet weather caused them to shatter. Knowing his luck this year will probably be dry. Grin

enjoyingSun · 20/05/2020 15:38

DH say many of his summer events, big industry get togethers and conferences, have been postpond to October and November this year - so canceling bonfire events his making him wonder if they'll go ahead at all now. They'd be a lot of people traveling to get to them so I suspect not.

We're still waiting with our UK holiday end of July start Aug- have another few weeks to decide to cancel to get some money back for the self catering accomodation in small English seaside town- but not hopeful about it.

rookiemere · 20/05/2020 15:40

thenightsky oh well done for getting a physio appointment. I went online to check my local one and they are doing online sessions which I was a bit surprised about.", as surely it's the equivalent of an online massage.

countrygirl99 · 20/05/2020 15:41

cattermole same in my hobby. The events in my hobby take months of planning that will include a fair amount of travel for route planning and checking. There could be up to 2 routes at 15, 25, 35 and 45km. I suspect some background planning is happening for late summer events in the hope they can go ahead but probably with a couple of levels. And late summer events would be qualifiers for next years championship. I hope they roll over qualification from this year (not that that impacts me as my horse is retired from comps)
