FromDespairToHere · 17/05/2020 23:17

I hate it. One of my least favourite films.

Iamthewombat · 17/05/2020 23:19

Nobody puts Baby in a Corner.’ The film line of the century

This is ironic, right?

Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world/ there’s no place like home/fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night/ I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse etc etc.

And you choose a dopey line from effing Dirty Dancing as the film line of the 20 th century??????

Although I have heard that nobody lost money by underestimating public taste, so perhaps I should not be surprised.

Shinygreenelephant · 17/05/2020 23:21

I hate it, makes my toes curl. Johnny is a cunt

LycraLovingLass · 17/05/2020 23:24

When I first watched it I didn't understand any of the abortion bit it was just the dancing and the romance.

I still love it even though its not a nice story and the acting is crap. You just have to not take it too seriously.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 17/05/2020 23:25

Only watched bits - not impressed at all.

Top Gun was a great film btw 😎

Banaltra · 17/05/2020 23:31

Nope. Hate Grease too but I can at lease tolerate some of the Grease soundtrack.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 17/05/2020 23:38

Love Grease 🤩

UnitedRoad · 17/05/2020 23:40

I love it. Johnny and Baby are still together in my imagination.

Chillipeanuts · 17/05/2020 23:41

No, it’s terrible.
Love Patrick Swayze though, such a sad, young loss. Just hilarious in “Keeping Mum”.

Frangible · 17/05/2020 23:49

I was the target age when it was released, and still thought it was about a creepy, chippy man in high-waisted trousers taking advantage of an abortion caused by another man’s creepiness to grind his crotch on the barely-legal pedal pushers of a spoilt Daddy’s girl with zero judgement.

iklboo · 17/05/2020 23:51

I can't bloody stand it

Eggybreadleg · 17/05/2020 23:52

That movie was the first time I ever felt turned on! I think you had to be the right age.

Deadringer · 17/05/2020 23:53

Awful film, made almost bearable by the gorgeous Patrick Swayze.

Mopmum35 · 18/05/2020 00:03

OMG come on!
Its absolutely fucking brillGrin
One of my favourite films.
( born in the 80s)
I have to say though best watched by myself not with hubby as it's one of those films that is a bit cringeworthy while watching with someone else but still I love it. #sheslikethewind

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/05/2020 00:03

I think I was about 9 when I first saw it, and me and my mum both loved it. Me for the dancing (I was a ballerina) and her for Patrick Swayze I assume. The abortion bits went over my head. By the time i was about 13 i had worn the VHS out, I watched it every night almost. It is one of those films that I watch now with fondness as it is a nostalgic treat. I don't think the relationship between Baby and Johnny is creepy at all, but then I have always preferred older men so maybe I'm not the most objective on that.

Iamthewombat · 18/05/2020 00:05

NONONONONO I refuse to believe that anybody could hear ‘she’s like the wind’ and not snigger uncontrollably! Not because of the wind/trumping but because it is so cheesy and excruciating.

iklboo · 18/05/2020 00:10

Sorry, Patrick Swayze does less than nothing for me.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 18/05/2020 00:12

I agree with you! Never got the hype.
The redeeming feature about it is the backstreet abortion storyline - very scandalous at the time of its release! I don't think any film has ever approached this subject so well

AbsentmindedWoman · 18/05/2020 00:15

I hate it and always have!

Vomit-worthy.

AbsentmindedWoman · 18/05/2020 00:21

Totally agree you have to be young and hopeful when you first watch this film and it will speak to you like no other. Old, cynical and objective just doesn't work. If you were 16 you would long to be Baby and have that chance to be Johnny's dance partner.

Really, this is not a universal teenage response Grin

Patrick Swayze is a good looking guy but the whole thing just left me cold. I found it cringey, don't even remember why, but I don't think I could even watch the whole thing.

Actually coming to think of it I dimly remember having a lot of second hand embarrassment for Baby because of her stupid infantilising name Hmm

Iamthewombat · 18/05/2020 00:23

Sorry, Patrick Swayze does less than nothing for me.

Me neither. Sweaty vest and mullet. And strange eyebrows. Perhaps standards of heart throbbage were lower in the 1980s? After all, some girls actually fancied Glenn Medeiros.

YouDeserveFlowers · 18/05/2020 00:25

It's amazing. The end.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2020 00:28

It really is awful, has anyone linked to the cut scene yet where they are dry humping?

GlummyMcGlummerson · 18/05/2020 00:28

I never got the Swayze love either. Very plain face.

If anyone wants a good laugh The Keith and Paddy picture Show did an excellent dirty dancing parody www.dailymotion.com/video/x6cd8yw

Paddy's head bobbing as Swayze is brilliant

acatcalledjohn · 18/05/2020 00:31

Whether or not you rate the film, this quarantine parody of the final dance scene is excellent!
