I think it's one of the few US films where the character actually goes ahead with the abortion which is quite amazing in itself.
Yes, the storyline is unpleasant at times but you could say that about most films.
For me it has the nostalgia, music, romance, confusion and fear - pretty much teenage-y stuff. I loved it but then I was a teen when it came out Grin

buckfastattiffanys · 17/05/2020 21:44

'Where is my beige iridescent lipstick?'

loved her!!

Settle59 · 17/05/2020 21:45

no - you're not the only one

I saw it in 1988 and... it didn't blow me away!!!

IdentifyasTired · 17/05/2020 21:45

You're not alone. I don't get the love for this movie. Utter dross.
Same with a lot of stuff that becomes really popular.
I long ago concluded that I am either a) a dinosaur or b) a big fat snob.
Either way I don't really care!

Etinox · 17/05/2020 21:46

It’s grim. Never understood the appeal. And I’m the right age group and loved all the dance movies.

Mrsmadevans · 17/05/2020 21:47

YADNBU

Tootletum · 17/05/2020 21:48

I can't describe how much that movie means to me. I think you have to have grown up with it though. Objectively speaking it is bollocks. But try being 13

LassoOfTruth · 17/05/2020 21:51

I'm with you OP. Not the worst film ever, but very overrated. Ditto Grease, Top Gun. I'm exactly the right generation and have never understood why it's so adored!

No you're not. I've always thought it's overrated. It's pretty crap really.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/05/2020 21:57

I like it. It's not just a shallow romance film but a story about friendship and loyalty and how men take advantage of women and usually get away with no consequences. And what life was like for women with no access to legal abortion.
As an adult though, you do see it more from the parent's pov - I'd have punched Johnny into the middle of next week for going near my daughter!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/05/2020 21:57

Sixteen Candles hasn't aged well

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/05/2020 21:58

I've never seen it and don't think I want to after reading this thread.

Moonlite · 17/05/2020 22:01

It's a cringe fest from start to end in my opinion! However my sister absolutely loves it, different strokes. I do like the soundtrack though.

isabellerossignol · 17/05/2020 22:01

Yeah, even as a teenager I thought it was a bit pish. Found Johnny creepy, and a horrific character too. Dancing was good though!

I remember at school a girl telling me that she and her boyfriend (we were about 14) had spent hours re-enacting that scene where she's learning the dance and she's standing with her back to him and her arm up and he runs his hand down her arm and down her body to her waist. I think she thought I'd be jealous and find it romantic but I was mortified for her.

Thereshegoesagain · 17/05/2020 22:02

Agree, totally cringy from start to finish.

Toilenstripes · 17/05/2020 22:03

But it has the great Jerry Orbach (who did the voice of Lumiere in the original Beauty and the Beast) and Kelly Bishop (a.k.a. Emily Gilmore)!

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 17/05/2020 22:04

Oh it's still bloody brilliant!

However, the older I get the more ick I get about the fact that Baby was only supposed to be 17/18 and Johnny was in his mid twenties. I don't know, it's not exactly a huge age gap but but she had only just finished school!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 17/05/2020 22:05

OMG I hate it.

Cannot see the appeal. And I am also in the right age group.

Patrick Swayze leaves me cold (although feel bad to say as he has no right of reply)

And what was Jennifer Grey thinking wth that nose job? left herself completely unrecognisable and really limited her future casting

WilburWeathervane · 17/05/2020 22:10

Nope, don't even like the music either Shock. Grease and Footloose are more my thing.

pigoons · 17/05/2020 22:14

it's shit but it didn't stop me staying up watching it on telly the other night when I should've been getting some sleep instead

BlueBooby · 17/05/2020 22:14

I don't understand what there is to like about it. I used to have 3 housemates who loved it and watched it every day (or it felt like every day). I just don't get it at all.

Can anyone tell me the name of another dancy 80s film? A specific one I mean, not just any random one. There's a teenage girl, I think she has brown curly or wavy hair. She wants to go to a dance school, or she likes dancing or something... I think she gets a job as a builder and dances in the night time. And an older guy is into her. They probably got together or something happened. I remember it grossing me out, I just can't remember the name.

Holothane · 17/05/2020 22:15

Never seen it and have never wanted too.

Missillusioned · 17/05/2020 22:18

@BlueBooby flashdance?
