I've never seen it.

dayswithaY · 17/05/2020 22:19

Totally agree you have to be young and hopeful when you first watch this film and it will speak to you like no other. Old, cynical and objective just doesn't work. If you were 16 you would long to be Baby and have that chance to be Johnny's dance partner.

IhateBoswell · 17/05/2020 22:20

I did not know Dr Jake Houseman was the voice of Lumiere! Shock

Barton10 · 17/05/2020 22:20

I really don’t see the appeal. It’s a boring badly acted film and very overrated!

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/05/2020 22:20

I've just watched it and I love it!

glitterbiscuits · 17/05/2020 22:21

It's creepy. I haven't seen it in about 25 years but I'm assuming I'd hate it even more now.
Ugh!

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/05/2020 22:22

When it came out I identified with baby- holiday romance/ first love / drama etc

But now I totally see where her dad was coming from - nasty Jonny corrupting an innocent girl

changeagainandagain · 17/05/2020 22:22

I think you had to be about 12-16 when it came out to really love this film?

It was literally the first time I'd ever felt anything for a man, it was just teenage hormones going wild so it wasn't about the story the acting it was about sexy education and watching to with your girlfriends over and over again.

Same as flash dance I wanted to be Alex the welder and smoke in my loft apartment!

noraclavicle · 17/05/2020 22:23

Never mind not rating it, am 50 next month & I’ve never even seen it!

itsanotherdayinparadise · 17/05/2020 22:24

The soundtrack is amazing

RiftGibbon · 17/05/2020 22:24

I've never seen it, and I have absolutely no interest in doing so.
I saw Grease just once and hated it.
I'm not really someone who enjoys "popular" stuff.Grin

Nitpickpicnic · 17/05/2020 22:28

There’s a terrific ‘The Making of Dirty Dancing’ somewhere. It has a lot of detail on the challenging filming conditions of the film.

The weather was really humid and it didn’t stop raining for months. Everyone lived together onset- like their characters.

It had great interviews with cast and crew. Made the whole film far richer for me. Mind you, I was Baby’s age when it came out and I was in the full thrall of sexual awakening myself. Loved every (now cringey) moment of it!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 17/05/2020 22:28

@BlueBooby

Sounds like Flashdance? loved it but the appalling body double in her dance school audition is laughable

Russellbrandshair · 17/05/2020 22:34

It’s an amazing coming of age film and I have such a fondness for it. I could watch it over and over again

policeandthieves · 17/05/2020 22:35

@mumsiedarlingrevolta

Wasn't the body double in Flashdance actually a bloke?

buckfastattiffanys · 17/05/2020 22:40

@bluebooby Flashdance!

Iamthewombat · 17/05/2020 22:48

It is a TERRIBLE film. It is AWFUL.

I was 15 when it came out. Zero interest. Forced to watch it (social pressure) during a sleepover aged 16. What a crock of shite! I was the target market and still thought it was embarrassing.

keepingbees · 17/05/2020 22:48

Yeah it's shite. In the same bracket as Grease.

I beg to differ, Grease is amazing.

Dirty Dancing is just meh. I find it more watchable now than when I was younger weirdly, but Johnny comes across as a douche and I could never take to Jennifer Grey.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/05/2020 22:51

Baby is so irritating spoils the film

The dancing (without her) is good

Went to see it at the theatre the cast were obviously very bored

squeekums · 17/05/2020 22:56

I cant stand it
So boring, tedious actors
Yawn

Imagine going through drama school then having to appear in that load of bollix! Who wouldn’t be bored?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/05/2020 23:06

😆😆😆

KingSheathBelle · 17/05/2020 23:10

I love that film, bought it on DvD.

'Nobody puts Baby in a Corner. ' The film line of the century Grin

Great music, love the dancing, especially the lat scene as it reminds me of my dad who, though I thought he hadn't been watching at all merely said 'Who moved all the chairs out of the way'.

It's escapist schmaltz.

Bellabatwings · 17/05/2020 23:13
