Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

The girl in Grease was Sandy Olsson.

Sandie Shaw sung “Puppet On A String” amongst others. I think the name is a pun in that it happens to also be a phrase.

AliasGrape · 10/05/2020 09:44

@Tulipvase no connection, nothing to do with Grease. Sandie Shaw was a singer who sang ‘Puppet on a String’ (was it a uk Eurovision entry or have I made that up’) Name is I guess a pun on sandy shore though whether intentional or not I don’t know.

The character from Grease was called Sandy Olsson - no connection

AliasGrape · 10/05/2020 09:44

Cross post!

prh47bridge · 10/05/2020 09:44

I also don’t get the sandie shaw thing, what’s the connection of sandy shore to Grease

The character in Grease is Sandy Olsson. Sandie Shaw was the stage name of Sandra Ann Goodrich, a 1960s singer who was the first UK singer to win Eurovision.

As for the person who didn't think birds could poo while flying - how has this never happened to you or to anyone you know??!

I can't believe I've been shit on more than once including once in my birthday and one IN MY EYE, and there are people who have never been shit on by a flying bird. That doesn't seem fair.

TeaStory · 10/05/2020 09:45

@BatleyTownswomensGuild I remember there was a big legal argument about it because VAT was levied differently on cake and on chocolate biscuits.

Notwiththeseknees · 10/05/2020 09:46

I have just realised that if Russia fired rockets at the USA (which was my huge worry as a kid in the 70's) they would not have to fly over Europe & cross the Atlantic.

I am also a sailor Blush

Ninkanink · 10/05/2020 09:46

@BatleyTownswomensGuild as stated above, that is in fact a legal distinction, which I find very interesting because I love anything related to law!

Pineapples do not grow on trees. You can't shake them. They grow in the ground.

Errm, no. They grow in bushes.

JudyCoolibar · 10/05/2020 09:50

But now I don’t understand the connection between sandie shaw the singer and sandy shore - that the OP has alluded to?

Simply that they sound alike. I assume that is why the name was chosen?

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 10/05/2020 09:51

I'm pretty sure that we do eat male chickens as well as female.

It was news to me that Edinburgh is so far west, though.

dottiedodah · 10/05/2020 09:52

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies So many songs in the 60s were similar as well ,"Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix was widely believed to be about a strong form of Cannabis ,and Golden Brown by the Stranglers professed to be about heroin as well ,

Wouldn't they have been launched from Europe (places like Greenham Common)? America and Russia may be close but it is a long way to get from the fairly unpopulated areas at the far east of Russia to the major centres in the west. I think your 70s worries were justified!

ladybee28 · 10/05/2020 09:55

The alphabet song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep all have the same tune.

Found this out about a month ago.

Mind = blown.

prh47bridge · 10/05/2020 09:55

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies - this is Julian Lennon's picture that inspired the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

I've never had this happen to me (yet) but DH has been splatted a few times. Maybe he's a bigger target.Grin

Re: peppers changing colour as they age, some do, but if you read the comments below this article which says exactly that, you will find that it is not necessarily so:

I thought Anonymous was a persons name till I completely embarrassed myself in year 7 by choosing Anonymous as my favourite poet in front of the whole class 😳.

SkySmiler · 10/05/2020 09:58

Australian snow?

ScorpionQueen · 10/05/2020 09:59

Sorry, back to Grease.
Why was the song Sandra Dee if her name was Sandra Olsenn? Confused
Also, how did no-one notice they were all about 30? I always assumed American teens were just a lot older looking and cooler then UK teens when I was growing up. Turns out the movies weren't entirely accurate in their depiction.

covydleigh · 10/05/2020 10:00

That the Tennessee pick up line meant they're the only 10/10 they see and not 10 of that person...

I realised this probably over a year ago now but I don't know how I didn't get that sooner. Grin

TweetUsOnFacebook · 10/05/2020 10:00

Dd has been doing a project on Loch Ness. Apparently it's twice as deep as the North Sea 🤯

CherryValanc · 10/05/2020 10:01

But what's the connection?

Sandie Shaw sounds like sandy shore. How is that a pun? What's the exploitation of the sound them same?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 10/05/2020 10:01

Why do we keep putting these animals on our plates?

If we didn't, what do you think would happen to male calves? Dairy farming is far more cruel than meat farming.

If we all opted for a vegan diet to "save" these beautiful creatures there would be no use for them and they would cease to exist.

burnoutbabe · 10/05/2020 10:01

The Jaffa cake thing is a famous vat case as cakes don't have vat and biscuits do (or maybe did at the time of the case)
