Mine is Sandie Shaw. I can't believe it had never occurred to me until tonight that her name is a play on Sandy Shore.

@Heismyopendoor - That's because of the projection used by Google. Like all maps, they are representing a globe on a flat surface. That leads to some distortion.

There isn't much in it. Cardiff is 3.183 degrees West, Edinburgh is 3.189 degrees West. So Edinburgh is very slightly further west than Cardiff.

Love this thread. womanthatfelltoearth amazing tip.

JudyCoolibar · 10/05/2020 09:26

That Alaska is only around 50 mies from Russia.

womanthatfelltoearth · 10/05/2020 09:26

@changeagainandagain pour the milk into your cup first and then add coffee (I use a stove top coffee pot to make my coffee).

Also makes velvety hot chocolate - pour frothy milk over hot chocolate powder and stir...

I also don’t get the sandie shaw thing, what’s the connection of sandy shore to Grease?

Roomba · 10/05/2020 09:28

Not something I didn't know, per se, but something I'd never calculated that made me feel very odd...

I was watching a film made in 1998 with DS, and he laughed at some technology in it being ancient. I rolled my eyes and said it was seven years before he was born, hardly ancient history. He then pointed out that the first moon landing was only seven years before I was born. And my brain just went - woooaaahhhh! Because that seemed decades ago when I was a kid! So now I understand when DS thinks a flip phone on TV is weird prehistoric technology.

@JudyCoolibar how do you tie your double bows? I thought there’s only one way of tying a double bow but perhaps there’s more...It definitely works with what I would consider the usual double bow.

TeaStory · 10/05/2020 09:29

I can’t believe we are on page 9 and no-one has mentioned Gibraltar yet!

Ninkanink · 10/05/2020 09:30

Someone alluded to it earlier in the thread...

TeaStory · 10/05/2020 09:30

I also don’t get the sandie shaw thing, what’s the connection of sandy shore to Grease?

Huh? There isn’t one... is there?

synthony · 10/05/2020 09:30

Cows have best friends ?

Tulipvase · 10/05/2020 09:31

Well I don’t think so but It’s been mentioned earlier - isn’t the first post that point?

RandomMess · 10/05/2020 09:33

I think for British people that have only lived in the UK is because in an Atlas Hawaii is located artificially close to the west coast also in films go there for a weekend trip etc so there is no impression that it takes a 5 hours flight!

But like within the UK people thinking York is near Scotland... it's still a fair distance to drive!

cookiemonster5 · 10/05/2020 09:34

Fisherman's wife here wading in on the scampi debate.

Proper traditional scampi is made from monkfish tail.

The cheaper version is made from prawns (aka whole tail scampi). To get proper scampi made from monkfish you need to go to a fishmonger or make it yourself. Frozen and what is served in most restaurants is wholetail scampi.

And langoustines are different to prawns.

EdamFantastic · 10/05/2020 09:35

That there are no bridges over the amazon river. I always assumed there would be loads all the way down.

TeaStory · 10/05/2020 09:37

@Tulipvase sorry I don’t understand? What’s the connection of Sandie Shore to Grease then?

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/05/2020 09:38

My favourite trivia fact:

Tippex was invented by the mother of Mike Nesmith from The Monkees

My geography has always been pretty shonky. I used to think Billericay was in Ireland.

TheShoesa · 10/05/2020 09:38

The best milk for cafetierre frothing is Cravendale Skimmed IMH, gives a better, firmer texture than semi.. (Although my sister said to her it was like drinking coffee through warm Mr Whippy ice cream so you might not agree with me!)

CherryValanc · 10/05/2020 09:40

"I also don’t get the sandie shaw thing, what’s the connection of sandy shore to Grease?"

You're thinking of Sandra Dee.

No, I asked earlier what the significance, why is it a revaluation to sudden realise that Sandie Shaw sounds like sandy shore.

I've no idea why this is a pun (as someone called it.) What's it supposed to be a play-in of? Is it some how like Shaun the Sheep? (Which I think doesn't even work in all accents.)

Sussexbonfireviking · 10/05/2020 09:40

I was lucky enough to go to Bermuda for work a couple of years ago. I thought it was over near Barbados in the Caribbean.... boy did I get a shock!! It's way over in the middle of nowhere

Scampi used to be Monkfish here in the UK

Tulipvase · 10/05/2020 09:40

I think I have just inadvertently added to this thread.......

I thought sandie shaw was the girl in Grease - I can’t stand the film and have never really paid attention to it.

But now I don’t understand the connection between sandie shaw the singer and sandy shore - that the OP has alluded to?

zaphodbeeble · 10/05/2020 09:41

I used to think Dunkirk was in Scotland

prh47bridge · 10/05/2020 09:42

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was about LSD

No it wasn't. This is often said but it is wrong.

The Beatles were doing drugs at the time but Lennon, who wrote it, was surprised at the idea it was about LSD. He said it "wasn't about that at all". It was actually inspired by his son Julian. When he was 3, Julian brought home a drawing from nursery school. When asked what it was, Julian said it was "Lucy - in the sky with diamonds", Lucy being his classmate, Lucy O'Donnell. Lennon used that as the title and wrote the lyrics in the style of Alice in Wonderland.

I must admit I thought it was about LSD for a long time. It was only relatively recently I found out the truth.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/05/2020 09:42

Also someone told me recently that a Jaffa Cake should definitely be considered a cake not a biscuit because a stale Jaffa Cake goes hard like a cake. Whereas stale biscuits go soft. This distinction blew my tiny mind...

Tulipvase · 10/05/2020 09:42

Cherryvalanc understands me!
