Do you have any landmarks you look out for so you know you are near home?

As kids when the power satiation’s and the pit came into view we always knew we were nearly home. Now it’s when we can see the ‘golf ball’, which is a radar station but from a distance looks like a giant golf ball, you can see it from miles away.

Winter Hill and Darwen Tower

rednsparkley · 09/05/2020 22:56

There's been a few mentions of my 'nearly there' landmarks Grin - and I've driven past quite a lot of the others too

Zisforstripyoss · 09/05/2020 23:03

@LordGarmadon that's the one!

merryhouse · 09/05/2020 23:05

@Zisforstripyoss Yes! On the train coming from the north!

I live rather closer to several other posters now - though if you get close to Penshaw or see the Angel you've missed our junction Grin. From the bridge we can see the monument but I don't think it's visible from the road. Scotch Corner is our "home stretch" marker.

On the way to MIL's we go through a place which is almost certainly pronounced Wibston, but spelled Wyboston and I always think "well, why not?"

The power station south of Nottingham tells me we’re nearly at my bil’s.

The Angel of the North is my sign for almost being ‘home’ ie at my mum’s.

When coming home, it’s the junction of the M25 off the M1.

nursehathaway · 09/05/2020 23:08

Big green incinerator next to the motorway

saturdaynightgin · 09/05/2020 23:12

@Yorkshireswithallroasts Port Talbot steelworks for me too!

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate · 09/05/2020 23:16

When driving to Spain on holiday (when I was a kid), soon after getting over the border, we would see a black billboard that was shaped like the silhouette of a bull, high on a hill, which was always very exciting and a bit mysterious.

Lolimax · 09/05/2020 23:21

The Severn Bridge (or whatever they've called it) coming into Wales. You know you're home. And then it starts raining.

Lurleene · 09/05/2020 23:21

When you arrive at my town and see the Welcome sign you are immediately hit by a stench from the sewage works. That stink tells me I'm nearly home!

Ratcliff on Soar as previously mentioned was the landmark that told me we were getting near my Nanna's house. That brought back nice memory.

My in-laws live a few hours drive away and we calculated a particular house in Honiton to be the mid-way point of the journey. Now when we pass 'the puce house' we know we are halfway. It used to be the pink house but they painted it a few years back.

LordGarmadon · 09/05/2020 23:25

@Lurleene the pink castle of the corner?

LickYouLikeACrispPacket · 09/05/2020 23:26

The kelpies! That’s my nearly home from work marker on the M9. They are beautiful.

JacobReesMogadishu · 09/05/2020 23:28

We have a bridge to cross. Once we cross it then we’re back in the shire.

Lurleene · 09/05/2020 23:32

@LordGarmadon that's the one.Smile We get very excited when we see it.

Port1aCastis · 09/05/2020 23:33

The Tamar bridge still quite a way to drive but comforting to be in the home County

Mummybearsporridge · 09/05/2020 23:38

2 water towers near my house which can be seen from the motorway

LochJessMonster · 09/05/2020 23:39

The red lights of the QE2/Dartford bridge. Then it’s 12 minutes until I’m home Smile

BalancingStick · 09/05/2020 23:41

It used to be the Lucozade sign on on the M4 as you head into London. Now it's the Porsche garage on the M4.

DismantleMe · 09/05/2020 23:49

The forth bridges.

Flowersmakemyday · 09/05/2020 23:50

A monument that looks like a lighthouse on top of a hill, and is known locally as the pepper pot means we're nearly home.

AgadorSpartacus · 09/05/2020 23:51

Botany Bay then Rivington Pike then you know the Middlebrook turn off is next Smile

PickAChew · 09/05/2020 23:52

Travelling from the North, it's the angel of the north.

From the south, it's all a bit featureless, tbh. We know we're half an hour away when we're finally through the never ending A1 roadworks and the exits get closer together.

kazza446 · 09/05/2020 23:52

@picklesonaplate, I know exactly the one! The church at scorton. I know it as the nearly home tower!!

MsJaneAusten · 09/05/2020 23:59

@DramaAlpaca - I think your “particular hill to the right of the M6 as you travel north and approach the junction nearest my old family home” is our motorway mountain (not a mountain) that signals we’re nearly home Smile

Sgtmajormummy · 10/05/2020 00:01

We’re moving there in 10 weeks but we’ve been traveling to Trieste regularly for four years.
I can leave the motorway in two places but I always take the scenic route. It’s a competition to spot the sea and exclaim: “Aaaah, Trieste!”
But we look out for the Elephant Arch on the Coast Road.
