Do you have any landmarks you look out for so you know you are near home?

As kids when the power satiation’s and the pit came into view we always knew we were nearly home. Now it’s when we can see the ‘golf ball’, which is a radar station but from a distance looks like a giant golf ball, you can see it from miles away.

Wetherby services always means only 30 mins until home Haha

RandomMess · 09/05/2020 19:06

Forton Services on the M6, Victoria Wood described it as an atomic mushroom cloud 😂

When driving as soon as the Squinty Bridge comes into view I know I'm back in Glasgow and nearly home.

tinytemper66 · 09/05/2020 19:09

Steel works.

I have to cross some Moors to get home. When I can see a ruined abbey and the sea on the horizon, I know I'm nearly home. Do you know where I live? Smile

When I pass Meadowhall coming from the south (where the cooling towers used to be, as already mentioned). But it's always been Meadowhall as the landmark for me.

@justonecottonpickingminute

Whitby!

1st one to spot Penryhn Castle Smile

There was a large garage near one set of grandparents and a tile shop near the other, they were our signs as kids we were near family. My children told me the little yellow building means we're near my dad's (their grandad). It's funny what sticks out.

Ratcliffe on Soar power station here too!

Forth Road Bridge - nearly home

justonecottonpickingminute · 09/05/2020 19:12

@RandomMess Yes!!

Writing this has made me nostalgic for my regular weekly commute home from "down South". I've been self-isolating at home for 8 weeks now! Eep!

reefedsail · 09/05/2020 19:13

Ah, there we go. Much better!

Another one for Emley Moor Mast, which comes 2 minutes after Meadowhall if we are coming from the south.

AdoptedBumpkin · 09/05/2020 19:13

Tibshelf services on the M1 is another less glamorous one.

Snaleandthewhail · 09/05/2020 19:16

The town I grew up in had a tower in the moor over looking it. From the top, on a clear day, you could see miles and miles. We were nearly home.

Here the landscape is less iconic and my kids won’t know the “we’re nearly home” feeling. However i live close to where I used to visit frequently as a child and their are two unremarkable places - one a supermarket just off the motorway, one a stretch of dual carriageway up a hill - which remind me of my childhood in a very lovely way.

The lake

AuntieDolly · 09/05/2020 19:19

Beckon gas works (in the olden days!)

heron20 · 09/05/2020 19:20

A third for Emley Moor mast.

I was up they way walking earlier. Lovely place to be quarantined.

Blingismything · 09/05/2020 19:22

The Devil's punchbowl.

If my friends neighbour ever sells his old boat (has plants and things in it) I will never know where her turning is!

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 09/05/2020 19:24

The 'Vicar of Dibley' motorway cutting.

Northernsoullover · 09/05/2020 19:24

The Severn Bridge but I don't really look at for it because I have to physically cross it.

ladygracie · 09/05/2020 19:24

When my kids were small we had a caravan by the coast. Our journey there was mapped out by landmarks. It was great as it gave the kids a clear idea of where we were.
And ages ago my son fell asleep on a long journey and when he woke up said he knew we were near home as the first thing he saw was a poster for a lost cat that looked just like a leopard.
Near my parents house there is a windmill so that’s our sign that we are pretty much there.
Interesting thread idea 😊

Either The Malvern Hills or a single tree on a hill next to the junction. I love seeing it!
