Do you have any landmarks you look out for so you know you are near home?

As kids when the power satiation’s and the pit came into view we always knew we were nearly home. Now it’s when we can see the ‘golf ball’, which is a radar station but from a distance looks like a giant golf ball, you can see it from miles away.

The Tamar bridge, once over that I'm on home land

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/05/2020 17:46

The 'cloud factory' just outside town. They actually make wood products that's not as nice to think about.

If it's a long journey than Scotch Corner let's me know its not far now.

CurseryKinkajoo · 10/05/2020 17:50

Ferry bridge power station when going ‘home’ to my parents house.

Knapford (Nearly Home) Copse by A30 when coming back to my home in Cornwall.

eldeeno · 10/05/2020 17:51

If I'm coming home from the North, it's the descent down into Burford and through the town.

If I'm coming back from the South it's Faringdon Folly - a random Victorian tower sat randomly on a hillside.

When Samson and Goliath cranes are visible on the skyline I know I’m on the home straight.

Geekster1963 · 10/05/2020 18:36

Cursery your parents probably live in the same area as mine, though they are nearer to Eggbrough power station.

eldeeno I recognise that photo of Buford, we used to live very near there.

Another one here for Emley moor mast 😍

TeetotalKoala · 10/05/2020 18:47

My motorway exit is a mile from a certain services coming from the West, and I only live a five minute drive from the junction, so that's one.
From the East is a sign advertising a local Stove shop.
I know that I'm nearly at my dad's when I see Lancaster uni. When I go to my hometown, it's Shannon's Corner on the A3. Visiting my grandmother it's the Highest Point on the Heads of the Valley road. Both times I'm just mere minutes away.

Used to be Didcot cooling towers - now demolished. When we were in London it was one or other (or both) of the Crystal Palace TV towers.

TrashPanda · 10/05/2020 19:08

Quite a few for Didcot cooling towers. @ratonastick where is the hut thing on the a34?

TellySavalashairbrush · 10/05/2020 19:15

Clacket Lane services. When I came back from living in Europe for 4 years (and was very very homesick) I actually cried with happiness when I saw it Grin

Ratonastick · 10/05/2020 19:18

Trashpanda On the right as you drive north on the A34 between Newbury and Didcot. Can’t be more precise as I haven’t been on the A35 for two months!!! It’s a sort of strange white thing built into the side of the escarpment overlooking the motorway.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 10/05/2020 19:23

The 'nearly home' church is St Peter's in Scorton. I've got a couple of services past that to go, then I'm home. It used to be that I judged it by seeing Camelot and Heinz on my way towards Liverpool off the M6.
I know I'm on my way to work when I see the bottom of Windermere.

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 10/05/2020 21:02

We have a 'golf ball' too OP! Wonder if we are close Grin

CurseryKinkajoo · 10/05/2020 21:44

@Geekster1963 I can see Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge from their back bedroom. They’re in a village between Selby and York.

Geekster1963 · 10/05/2020 22:22

We might be Rowena, I’m in Lincolnshire.

cursey yes my parents are about 7 miles from Selby. So not far.

My Lincolnshire golfball is Ingham.

clumsyduck · 10/05/2020 23:14

I weirdly love driving on the motorway probably because it means I am going somewhere good / an airport . Loved this thread as recognize some of the landmarks mentioned from various trips . Made me feel a bit nostalgic for when we could actually leave our homes Sad

TrashPanda · 10/05/2020 23:58

Thanks ratonastick

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 11/05/2020 01:26

Ah no my golf ball is further north. I wonder if they're all connected?

Eliza72 · 11/05/2020 01:50

@IcyWind colmers hill?!

MrsMop1964 · 11/05/2020 02:00

As a kid the sight of Blackpool Tower meant we were nearly home. I visited after being away for over 30 years and still felt that feeling when I saw it.

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate · 11/05/2020 07:04

As a kid the sight of Blackpool tower meant we were nearly on holiday! Which was very exciting!

Geekster1963 · 11/05/2020 13:13

Yes I wonder if the ‘golf balls’ are connected there used to be some over the moors on the way to Whitby too. I think it was at Fylingdales or something similar.I think they have gone now. We drove past loads of them on the way to the Yorkshire Dales last year, can’t remember the name of the place, I think someone up thread mentioned it.

@Geekster1the one near us is related to the RAF - it actually got temporarily moved to a base a little while ago and everyone was confused as to where it had gone!
