Massive surveillance and selling the data as pretty much it will be the only asset the U.K. has left.

MorrisZapp · 27/04/2020 12:16

The reason why no leaders, including Sturgeon or Johnson, are outlining specific steps to ease lockdown is because the second those measures are said out loud, people will start moving towards them.

Example. In two weeks time, we're going to let you visit your family members, with appropriate social distancing. Population then thinks ok, that's clearly a low risk activity, I'll do it now. Personally I wouldn't mind that one but the MN massive think chatting in gardens is akin to licking strangers faces.

PMQs will be very interesting this week

I dislike Boris but what he said made sense to me. NO we are not coming out of lockdown.

He is right we should not be coming out and as for all the idiots that have decided for themselves that lockdown is over I hope they will be proud of themselves when the second wave hits and the NHS can't cope

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/04/2020 12:18

I really don’t get the dislike (on this forum anyway) for Boris Johnson.

I don't get the love. Putting aside his personal life (which has been notorious for at least 20 years), he has been sacked for lying, both as a journalist and a member of the Government, he was the worst Foreign Secretary for a generation, not very good as Mayor or a constituency MP, waffles like mad and never has a coherent plan. His attitudes towards women, the working classes and people of colour are well documented and nothing to be proud of.

How can anyone have any faith in his competence?

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:20

Mi6 wouldn’t give Boris full briefings because he’s a blabbermouth who leaked details about our assets abroad. And now he’s PM.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/04/2020 12:20

He could find the cure for cancer

No bloody chance of that, he's too lazy to put in the work which would be required

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:22

And Cummings is weird one.
Having a PM that needs to be babysat by a weirdo like Cummings who fantasises about destroying the civil service and hacking and eliminating online critics does not give me confidence in the man.

CendrillonSings · 27/04/2020 12:29

He could find the cure for cancer and people on here would still find something to criticise him for.

Yep! He could shit gold by the ton and fire lightning bolts from his arse and moaners would still be unimpressed... Grin

MarieQueenofScots · 27/04/2020 12:32

Don’t worry, the sycophants are always there to praise him for doing a job badly...

chomalungma · 27/04/2020 12:34

OTOH - he could say that it's ok to shake hands in a pandemic with an virus going around when he is in a hospital full of such patients, and then say that's ok because he washes his hands later and supporters would still come and support his statement on that. Even when he then goes and catches the disease.

Because his supporters see no fault at all in him.

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:34

One of these is the real Boris.
The other is Our Great Leader Who Is Above Criticism For Any Reason Whatsoever May We Bow Down Before His Image.... grovel grovel

Is it maybe possible to neither love or loathe him? Maybe to have a nuanced human reaction to the things he does, as and when he does them?

I don't love him as a politician, I'd never vote Conservative. But I think he's got his strengths and weaknesses, as history shows us all leaders do. Maybe not Trump.

If you paint yourself into the corner of 'Boris did it so it's ghastly by definition' then there is literally nothing he can do right other than step down from government, which raises its own horrible scenarios and would be interpreted as cowardice of the absolute worst kind.

So those who loathe him, loathe away. That's your right. But it would be great to hear more about how you think he should be fixing things going forward, and how we can all get out of the current lockdown with minimum risk to life.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 27/04/2020 12:37

I don't trust him to find the cure for a headache, even after Whitty has handed him the pack of aspirin.

chomalungma · 27/04/2020 12:37

I hope someone asks him if he regrets that comment on shaking hands.

I hope someone asks him what the scientific advice was about Cheltenham and the football matches going ahead - when it was clear that other countries were suffering, that the virus was already in the country, so what was the scientific advice about it being safe to go ahead with large events like that?

RainMustFall · 27/04/2020 12:37

Excellent returning speech, so pleased to see Boris looking a great deal better. I'm glad he's back.

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:39

You can’t make any kind of suggestion about how anyone else can do things! You must tow the party line! Total Obedience!
How dare you criticise or suggest!!
Bank in your bunker and keep quiet!!

The80sweregreat · 27/04/2020 12:39

If people are slowly lifting lockdown on their own , then you can't blame the government for not letting people know too much in advance. It would be terrible to give false hope , then discover it would be a bad idea a few days later when the numbers go up again ( for example)
.. It has to be done in stages and give businesses a chance to modify their work situations to take social distancing into account etc.
It will take a while for places to get a workable model up and running I guess : staff might have to go on a rota or something along those lines.
I'm guessing here , I've no idea, but things can't happen over night either.
I just hope people can keep up the social distancing and stick to any new measures.
Won't be easy.

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:40

Don’t shake hands with a ward full of pandemic patients and joke about it.

Get the testing right.
Get trace and test right.

Get PPE sorted

That's what the focus should be on.

It was what helped South Korea - a few months ago.

bulliedintonamechange · 27/04/2020 12:41

@mrstwiddle I agree, I think he was what the country needed to what instead of these wishy washy scientists. He wasn't supposed to give any information, as normal that will be in the press briefing, this was just a touching base to say he's back! People just love a moan, pathetic really

MarieQueenofScots · 27/04/2020 12:41

I can only assume the people saying “excellent speech” have never had to give a speech.

I’m glad the chap is better.

chomalungma · 27/04/2020 12:43

I agree, I think he was what the country needed to what instead of these wishy washy scientists

Bloody scientists with their recommendations, their tests and statistics.

I am sure Cummings will sort them out

Ulver · 27/04/2020 12:43

“I think he was what the country needed to what instead of these wishy washy scientists. “

I take it back, the U.K. is just as bad as the US when it comes to politics.

AnnofPeeves · 27/04/2020 12:43

If they came out today and said in 2 weeks' time we will allow gatherings of 10 or less, allow smaller shops to open, people to use public transport more etc the sad reality is that people would start doing it now. People are breaching the strict rules as it is and it would only get worse. Yesterday I saw a group of girls sitting by the river, a group having a picnic and the local pub car park which is near a beauty spot, was completely full. People's mentality is that if it will be ok to do X in 2 weeks, why not do it now.

Also, as we are a little behind France, Italy and Spain, I suspect we are watching what's happening there as they ease lockdown and will base our easing on lessons learnt from their experiences in the next few weeks.
