Imagine you’re at a buffet table, what do you put on your plate?

The longest buffet table imaginable: loads of options.

What do you go for?

(I’m bored, hungry and love a buffet!)

There is virtually nothing you could put out on a buffet table that I wouldn't eat unless it was one of those 50s US salads with lots of jello and marshmallows that I've seen pictures of.

Lots of really good sandwiches, all different fillings, cut into little triangles so I can delude myself that no matter how many I have I'm probably only eating the equivalent of one normal sandwich Grin

Pork pie - Melton Mowbray

Cheese - lots and lots of cheese. Could be on sticks with cocktail onions or pineapple cubes, or on a cheeseboard. None of your mild Cheddar muck. I want the sort of cheese that makes the inside of your mouth pucker up with its strength.

Cocktail sausages still warm from the oven and glazed with honey and mustard

Breaded prawns, still hot, with a good dipping sauce

Mountains of crisps, preferably posh ones

Cheese straws

Quiche Lorraine, preferably mini ones rather than slices, as they're easier to eat - other sorts of quiche also extremely acceptable

Fruit platter

Something sweet with about a million calories to finish off

Plenty of wine

Now ravenous. Sad

ALemonyPea · 25/04/2020 16:37

Anything deep fried
Anything covered in pastry
All the cheeses

wildthingsinthenight · 25/04/2020 16:38

Everything! And therein lies my problem..

Ninkanink · 25/04/2020 16:39

Seafood, of all varieties.

Linguine with a lemon, parsley and garlic sauce.

T-bone, marinated.

Warm potato salad with a vinaigrette dressing.

Mezze (a wide selection, thanks!).

Lamb shish.

Korean fried chicken.

Passion fruit sorbet.

Cheese plate.

Salads
Chilli
Rice or Bread

I avoid the beige, it's a bit Phoenix Nights.

Sgtmajormummy · 25/04/2020 16:59

The last UK buffet I helped on, they sent me to get two types of Sainsbury’s Mini Yum Yums. I had no idea what they were.
Whaaaaaaat? Shock
Fried sweet dough with sugar and toffee wet icing??
Very popular, though.

My choice would be the pork pie slabs with cylindrical boiled egg running through them.

ScarletAnemone · 25/04/2020 16:59

Fruit kebabs. Not hard green apples and unpeelable oranges or bunches of grapes where you can only pick off 2 or three. Proper kebab sticks, or even little cocktail sticks, with chunks of melon, pineapple, whole strawberries and grapes - lovely juicy colourful fruit that you can eat single handed with absolutely no mess.

Devlesko · 25/04/2020 17:00

vol au vents, cocktail sausages, sausage roll, pork pie, quiche, sandwiches, (various fillings), salad, chicken drumsticks, onion baji, samosa, salmon, cooked meats.

Tiramisu, trifle, black forest gateaux, fruit salad, death by chocolate, cheese and crackers, ice cream, sorbet.

Nymerialuna · 25/04/2020 17:01

BoswellsBollocks · 25/04/2020 17:59

I frickin love a buffet!

Everything from posh fancy canapés to a good old fashioned beige buffet, or British tapas as it’s known in our house.

Candyflosscookie · 25/04/2020 18:22

Yes! Love reading everyone's lists. I'll eat just about anything but I would be honing in on:

Chicken satay skewers
Sausage rolls with pickle
Dumplings/gyoza
Couscous with feta and mint
Peppers stuffed with soft cheese
Baguette (warm)
Baby beetroots
Guacamole
And 97 thousand mini cocktail sausages

Followed by proper New York style cheesecake and/or an amazing cheeseboard with lots of chilli jam.

Complexico · 26/04/2020 02:33

Oh, oh, oh, I have put on my best dress and my heels.

Caviar on blinis
Warm pitta strips with humous, taramasalata, baba ganoush and tabbouleh
Oysters
Scallops
Steamed tiger prawns with garlic aioli
Lobster
Seared tuna with seaweed
Waldorf salad
Coleslaw
Potato salad
Garden salad
Grilled vegetables
Grilled lamb chops
Grilled mixed kebabs (not donner)
Chocolate mousse
Baked Alaska
Cheese platter, celery, grapes and crackers

The problem is greedy omnis who snaffle the veggie stuff

No its not, it's caterers who don't seem to realise that omnivores might want to eat something other than processed pork, five ways and put out far too much of sausages, sausage rolls, ham sandwiches, pork pie and Scotch eggs and not enough other food like onion bhajis, cheese or egg sandwiches, hummus, potato salad, crisps, cheese and pineapple etc. You know, normal food that is attractive to everyone, not special token weirdy food for the odd vegetarians.

beebeedandelion · 26/04/2020 04:14

Nothing, or very little ! I hate the idea of a buffet
Probably a couple of grapes and a sandwich but the chances of me being there at all are slim.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/04/2020 05:19

Bang on, Barbara! Food which doesn't contain meat should be in the majority as most people will eat it.

KatherineJaneway · 26/04/2020 05:27

Quiche, coleslaw, potato salad, prawn mayo sandwiches (or most things prawn) and crisps.

LucaFritz · 26/04/2020 05:37

Nothing! If there's one thing this pandemic has taught me its to stay away from things like buffets and restaurants that don't use gloves Envy Im probably not the only one it'll have had this effect on either

Isobored · 26/04/2020 06:58

What are these jelly boats !! They sound amazing 💕

MitziK · 26/04/2020 10:14

Cut oranges in half, hollow out the insides, fill with jelly, allow to set and then carefully slice into quarters/thirds with a very sharp knife you've dipped into water so the blade doesn't stick.

If you're feeling fancy, add a cocktail stick flag. Hey presto, jelly boats.

I totally agree!

I am not veggie but that doesn’t mean I don’t love the options that happen to not contain meat.
Why should I stick to only meat options when there are other yummy options available?
To leave enough for the non meat eaters?
Nope, sorry. Not my fault if the caterers don’t cater correctly!

RedRed9 · 26/04/2020 12:31

@Isobored I remember being so in awe of them as a child!

Imagine you’re at a buffet table, what do you put on your plate?
