Imagine you’re at a buffet table, what do you put on your plate?

The longest buffet table imaginable: loads of options.

What do you go for?

(I’m bored, hungry and love a buffet!)

OP posts:
MoonlightMistletoe · 24/04/2020 22:38

Those prawn val eu vaunts ?
Battered prawns
Sesame toast
Satay chicken
Breadsticks and beetroot and mint dip
Salad especially with radish in it
Gherkins
Potato salad
My mouths watering now!

MoonlightMistletoe · 24/04/2020 22:39

Oh to swing down with a plastic cup full of cherryade Grin

MitziK · 24/04/2020 22:47

I endured quite a few of these. Most resembled a table of every beige available from Dulux. But a tiny number didn't (much to the disgust of the beige fans)

So

Olives
Chargrilled Artichoke in lemon and olive oil
Cherry tomatoes
Celery
Cheese. As long as it's not shitty mild Cheddar that's been left to sweat for three hours
Poppy seed crackers
Watercress
Sprigs of parsley
Strawberries
Grapes
Melon
Pineapple
Parma Ham/other charcuterie if it's not going crispy round the edges
Smoked salmon

Elderflower fizz.

CheriLittlebottom · 24/04/2020 22:49

Cherryade!! Amazing.

I love a warm buffet myself. Anything prawn or salmon based is going on the plate. Satay skewer things. Samosas. Warm bread so that I can load it up with butter that goes all melty.

And.... A baked camembert. Don't care about any kind of sharing etiquette or germ transfer, just get it in me.

Also, cheese & pineapple on a stick is bloody delicious, I made some for a party as a bit of a joke a little while ago and it was devoured in milliseconds. Why did we stop having it!?

CakeAndGin · 24/04/2020 22:49

Mini pizzas
Mini quiche
Shitty sausage rolls
Breadstick
Generic dip because someone threw away the lid with what dips they were
Maybe ready salted crisps - I hope they aren’t cheese and onion 🤢 - again someone has thrown away the packaging
Coleslaw
Chicken satay
Spring rolls
Onion bhajis
Pickled onions
Garlic bread
Chicken wings
Maybe meat in breadcrumbs - could be potato though
Ham roll
Cheese roll
Samosa

Pudding:
A piece of cake (I’m assuming I’m in some sort of function room for a ‘do’ of some variety)
A couple of the only-just-thawed mini desserts from the Iceland frozen dessert platter. I like the Black Forest and the strawberry thing with puff pastry
Mini brownie bites
Cheese and crackers

I’m trying to wolf everything down before the women who organised the party bring the black bin bag round. I wasn’t first in the line for the buffet as I got stuck in the ladies with a great-aunt who told me how fat I’d got. I also went to the bar and ordered a red wine but after drinking my first glass, decided I was safer on spirits (and I had more of a choice than just ‘red or white’). So I’m now on southern comfort and lemonade but the lemonade is flat. The function room only has the hard core gins (not the fluffy, flavoured gins I like), so I’m just sticking with the southern comfort but pulling a slight face every time I drink it.

I think I’ve been in lockdown too long - I am really getting into this night out at the local social club.

ViciousJackdaw · 24/04/2020 22:51

Seeing as though we're at the social club, are we going to have a meat raffle or a bus stop?

Frownette · 24/04/2020 22:53

I want cheese and pineapple now - I do have a tin of pineapple rings and some lovely strong cheese but no cocktail sticks.

Thwarted.

caz114 · 24/04/2020 23:00

Frownette- I've gone common - tin of pineapple and cheese eaten with my fingers- less washing up
Cocktail sticks - thats posh

Graphista · 24/04/2020 23:04

Ooh unlimited food fantasy love it!

Also veggie but generally find these days there's usually plenty on offer. The problem is greedy omnis who snaffle the veggie stuff!

Current favourites:

Walls Jackfruit mini "sausage" rolls
Quorn mini cocktail sausages and savoury egg bites
Veggie sushi items
Gyoza
Dips of all kinds except salsa (not a fan of spicy)
Fancy crisp flavours (as a kid it was ready salted, cheese n onion or salt n vinegar and that was it! Love all the flavours now!) also tortilla chips, mini poppadoms, pringles etc
Veggie pate with crackers or crusty rolls to spread it on
Mini spring rolls
Sundried tomatoes, olives and dried chickpeas to snack on

Always favourites

70's tastic "hedgehogs" - things on a stick! Mainly cheese cubes with varying accompaniments including bit not limited to pineapple cubes, silverskin onions, olives, glacé cherries, mini dill pickles...

Vol au vents filled with creamed mushrooms or a cheese and onion mix

Twiglets, cheeselets and similar

Mini tartlets, quiches & pizza

Potato salad, coleslaw, beetroot salad

Veggie pakora as long as not too spicy

Nuts of all kinds from salted peanuts to coated flavoured nuts and everything in between

No idea if there’s a name for these but we used to get hard boiled eggs, halved lengthways, the yolk scooped out and mixed with salad cream and put back in the white. They were yummy!

A huge and varied cheese board.

Sweet items

Mini cheesecake
Tray bakes especially millionaires shortbread
Scottish strawberry tarts from aulds (would pay loads for one right now)
Scottish tablet and macaroon bites
Melon slices, grapes, strawberries, pineapple on sticks to be dipped into chocolate sauce.

This thread proves we veggies love our food!

Drinks wise I’m normally a merlot or rum & Coke girl, occasionally a good chilled lager but for a buffet a good wine spritzer, archers and lemonade or best of all a big jug of mai tai - with a cocktail umbrella for my glass!

Ooooo cherryade you say? Do we think that would work with rum?

Cocktail sticks - thats posh only on mn Grin

Graphista · 24/04/2020 23:05

It's really no wonder I'm fat is it? Grin

I’m thinking of a nice hotel dinner buffet, so I want lots of different things in small amounts in a couple of servings, so a starter and then main. Consisting:
Squid
Prawns
Nice salads
Mozzarella
BBQ chicken
Paella or other rice dish
Dauphinois potato, or any potatoes but not chips
All the veg they have
Any nice looking fish
Delicious bread and some butter or olive oil for dipping

Pudding would be anything milky, creme caramel or rice pudding or something like trifle or a fruity cake.

JasonPollack · 24/04/2020 23:42

Ohhh buffet

All the soft cheese, accompanying grapes and nice crackers. Tiny pats of butter.

Also Chinese food. Crab claws. Crispy seaweed. Prawn toast.

And breakfast food! Crispy bacon. The scrambled eggs I had at a breakfast buffet in Barcelona in 2004 and have never been able to recreate.

Exceptional idea for a thread op.

Cherrysoup · 25/04/2020 00:01

There’s a World Buffet in my town. O. M. G. 1st thing you come to is prawns, then noodles, rice. Then Indian stuff, so lumps of chicken tikka. Then Italian, so pizza, spoon of pasta. Then there’s English, straight down to the cheese and biscuits, olives, gherkins, mini pickled onions. Stroll back up through the sushi, then round the American, lots of deep fried battered things.

Then meander to the desserts, literally a mouthful each, chocolate cake, cheesecakes, macaroons, ice cream, marshmallows, chocolate fountain, jelly sweets.

The waste is horrific, the greed is appalling, but just take a tiny taste of everything.

@Cherrysoup

world buffet what? Explain. And what town are you in? Shock

Cherrysoup · 25/04/2020 00:10

@thenightsky Global buffet, my bad. It’s obscene, massive, there are several round the country, I think. Mass production, bonkers.
