Why is everyone suddenly attempting to be a hairdresser?

Suddenly everyone is desperate for a haircut (and people are hacking away at their own and their partners hair. What's going on? We've been in lockdown for weeks, not months. Everyone's losing the plot 😂

My step dad hacked at his with a dog grooming kit and looks like he had an arm spasm half way through and has hacked a massive uneven bit off.
My friend let her husband cut hers when they were both pissed and he's taken about 30cm off (funny at the time, but not the next morning) and I've seen various other hack jobs 🤣🤣

Me, I'm just going to wait until the professionals are available again like a sensible person 😂

Because hair dressers aren’t open.

buttcrackmcheese · 20/04/2020 10:40

I've just seen a lady across the road with a freshly shaved head 🙄

bulliedintonamechange · 20/04/2020 10:41

It's quite obvious why

I just did the famous mumsnet haircut on myself!
(Hair in a high pony tail, chop it off, let it down)
It results in some kind of mullet arrangment so cheers for that Mumsnet!
I did it out of boredom.
DH has a number 1 all over.
DS is looking a bit shaggy but has so far (sensibly) evaded the clippers

ofwarren · 20/04/2020 10:44

Because hair grows?

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 10:44

Serilously?

I have short greying hair. Uncut with the roots showing it looks bloody awful. And no, I'm not vain. It really, truly looks terrible.

Not all of us are blessed with long locks that don't need colouring and only require the odd trim

Stop being so smug Hmm

Ginfordinner · 20/04/2020 10:45

I can spell
Seriously

Sparklingbrook · 20/04/2020 10:45

Because nobody can get a professional haircut at the moment. That’s why.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 20/04/2020 10:45

My brother shaved his head, his reasoning was he had always wanted to know what it would look like and he would likely never have another change quite like this.

My dad got my mum to give him a severe and tbh dreadful haircut, but then my parents have gone fully bonkers with this whole thing, refuse to go out of their house and garden, are obsessed with food deliveries and generally take every little thing that could be an issue and damn well make it into a giant crisis, so I wasn't surprised by that at all.

I'm going to have to do my fringe because it looks shite.

Enchantmentz · 20/04/2020 10:46

suppose they want to maintain a nice hair style or be tidy, but not everyone is lucky with the end result. I am leaving mine and dc hair be. Sure it will be a mess by the time we get to a hair dresser but at least we won't be making it harder for them to fix.

Tbh I don't mind letting it grow and on bad hair days I wear a snood/scarf to cover my hair. I used to cut a male friends hair every so often and didn't do a bad job but I would no doubt make a mess of mine.

LetMeOutOfHere · 20/04/2020 10:46

🤣🤣 not a chance I will be trying to cut my hair or DH or DC, I'd rather wait

Bringringbring12 · 20/04/2020 10:46

But loads of people were presumably due a hair cut or hair colour just before lockdown and couldn’t get an appointment.

mynameiscalypso · 20/04/2020 10:51

I'm not bothering with my own - it's long, doesn't have a style that needs much maintenance and I can just tie it up if needs be. My DH's hair grows quickly and looks very messy without regular cuts every couple of weeks. He needs to look presentable on video calls.

AuntieMarys · 20/04/2020 10:51

I go every 5 weeks for colour. Last appointment was supposed to be the first day of lockdown. So I have nearly 10 weeks of grey which isn't a great look.
Be interesting when my whole fringe is grey

Abreadsandwich · 20/04/2020 10:57

Presumably because they were due a haircut during the last 4 weeks....?
DH has his haircut about once a month (its v short) I did it with clippers, I used to do it for him all the time anyway so I know what to do. I also cut DS fringe. Both look absolutely fine.

Nearlyalmost50 · 20/04/2020 11:00

I was due a haircut but didn't get there in time (decided against it). Last had one in Jan, so that's three months now. Can keep going but hair gets split ends. I cut the kids hair til they were about 8/9, so reckon I can still do it!

WhenItIsOver · 20/04/2020 11:00

I wouldn't recommend the Mumsnet haircut to anyone unless you want to look as if you were sitting by a hedge when someone used the hedge cutter.

I do cut my own hair, have done for many years because I got tired of paying for something I didn't like, or looking for a new hairdresser because they were always leaving, moving, or getting pregnant. I also do my own colour.
I know what I am doing to a previous job so fortunately I don't tend to have odd patches of baldness and unintentional weird colours.

Fleamaker123 · 20/04/2020 11:03

I suspect there will be some people who will trim/colour it themselves over lockdown, and never go back, or just now and again (me!)

crankyhousewife · 20/04/2020 11:04

There's no way I'm bleaching my roots myself (been there, done that, never again). Give me salt and pepper roots any day to a bad bleach job.

Wotrewelookinat · 20/04/2020 11:04

I have very short cropped hair and have it cut every 4-5 weeks. It starts to look horrible and messy after that. So I cut it myself. 🤷‍♀️ Why does it matter to you anyway?

ch3rrycola · 20/04/2020 11:05

Hacked at mine because I was bored

Grasspigeons · 20/04/2020 11:07

now's the optimum time - aws you wont be seen for at least another 3 weeks and its plenty of time for the hair to grow again for a professional to sort it out - but its presumably not too long since your last proper haircut so you can still follow the shape of it.

Ughmaybenot · 20/04/2020 11:07

I’ve trimmed my own hair, I cane back from travelling in February and wanted to get a haircut as a first pay check treat... but then lockdown happened 😂 so i trimmed it myself.
As for DH, you’ve clearly never met anyone who’s hair grows like his does. He needed it cutting, so I did it. He has a fantastic mullet now, I’m so proud 😂

SmileyClare · 20/04/2020 11:07

I think a lot of people are desperate for a change. Everyday's the same and they feel a bit down with how unkempt they're starting to look.

It's easy to think Well how hard can it be to trim/dye my hair.. I'm not going out anywhere anyway and it'll soon grow back.

Laughing about the Mumsnet haircut Grin

  1. Put hair up in high ponytail
  2. Cut the lengths off as straight as you can
  3. Realise your scissors are a bit blunt and your arms are aching so desperately continue hacking off the hair because you've started now
  4. Take hair down
  5. Cry.
elQuintoConyo · 20/04/2020 11:07

I cut DH's hair with clippers on number 4/5. I cut DS' with hairdressing scissors, he's 8yo.

I was due a cut on 1st April, I havent had it cut since mid-jan and it's a frizzy mess, I can't tie it up. I still have video calls every day three or four hours, so I need to look presentable. I've taken to wearing hats!
