are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

We clapped in our totally not TV recorded quiet little suburban street here. It was lovely to see evertone standing in their doorways and at windows clapping. I don't think it's virtue signalling. It's just a small way to show NHS workers we think you are amazing and to say thank you for what you do.

Vebrithien · 26/03/2020 20:16

Could hear it echoing round the valley and basin of the city. So many people, stood at their windows.
I agree, it felt different to how I expected it to, a moment of community.

BarkandCheese · 26/03/2020 20:17

I think everyone was out on my street, my dog had a good bark along too.

Gizmo79 · 26/03/2020 20:17

Also, all my unit are so emotional right now, they are so happy, anxious and this made their day. Thankyou everyone.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 26/03/2020 20:18

I’m a cynical old boot but I thought it was really nice. We live on a huge street of 400+ houses and seemingly everyone was out doing it. It was lovely, made me feel much less isolated.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/03/2020 20:19

I think it's bizarre to be honest. DH is an NHS worker and thinks is totally cringeworthy. So, no we won't be participating. If people want to show support then the best way is to follow guidance, if people want to do more then I'm sure there are more practical things that can be done.

MowzersAsleep · 26/03/2020 20:19

I'm at work at my hospital tonight and hearing all the cheering and honking was actually really nice. Some staff that could went outside and joined in and we even had some police officers come to show their appreciation too.
It may be cringy but so what - for 5 minutes people came together and that's what matters.

Orerref · 26/03/2020 20:20

I think I was the only one in my block of flats, but 3 different flats opposite me were hanging out of their upstairs flat windows and clapping and 3 people coming out of the shop across the road also started clapping. I felt emotional.

Fivefourthree · 26/03/2020 20:20

I thought it was a nice bit of community spirit.

Daffodil55 · 26/03/2020 20:20

Yes I did from my window and I began to cry. I almost never cry. It just happened. Probably because on tv a few minutes earlier I saw virus patients lying on hospital corridoor floors waiting for beds.

It is getting worse each day. Yesterday I went to a supermarket and though quiet it was business as usual and could just walk in despite it being a one way system now. One door to enter and another to leave. Today I went to the same one again and security guards were on the main door letting one in as one went out and it was not because it was busy in there. A handful of customers at any one time.

Slowly but surely the restrictions are getting tougher. How long before we can not go out even for shopping or excercise?

Sorry went off subject there but learning of how many doctors have died after catching the virus from patients upset me so much today too.

shinynewapple2020 · 26/03/2020 20:23

It was lovely - all my neighbours went out to clap and also gave us chance for a catch up - from our doorsteps of course !

JustMySize · 26/03/2020 20:23

Quite a lot of houses on our street and we could hear lots of clapping, cheering and even a firework.

AnneElliott · 26/03/2020 20:25

Lots of people in our street did it - felt really nice to come together

Tigger001 · 26/03/2020 20:25

It was lovely, everyone in our close came out and it was lovely and a bit emotional hearing the clapping echo around the cul-de-sac.

A great moment.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 26/03/2020 20:26

Me and DD stood at our window and clapped. We were the only ones on our street. Main street in a small market town with lots of flats.
Normally I find this kind of thing exceptionally embarrassing to do, but these are exceptional times. We’re quite saddened.

APatchyTomCat · 26/03/2020 20:29

Me and DH have been eye rolling about it all day. Then at 19:59 he went out 'to listen'.

20:00 He's whooping and clapping like a loon.
20:30 so am I Grin

Was nice in the end.

Buscake · 26/03/2020 20:30

I am the most cynical person I know and I found it moving. Lovely to feel united.

dancerdog · 26/03/2020 20:30

I went out to have a look, thought it might sound like a single handclap...

spotted a few folk up the street, a few more, then started to hear a wave of cheering coming along from another street, and we then we were all gie'ing it laldy.

And then fireworks.

This is West of Scotland.

We are living in strange times.

Glad I did it.

gerbo · 26/03/2020 20:31

Yes, we did. Most of my street cane out and there were even a couple of fireworks. We had clapping, whistling, whooping and cheering.

I second-guessed myself earlier, having glimpsed this thread, having intended to clap.

Then I realised I bloody WAS clapping.

My brother is a nurse in a large London hospital. He currently has the virus. He's an amazing man and is counting down the days to going back to help no doubt some of you lot in A&E.

So ya boo sucks to 'so cringey'.

All the 'it's so cringey' crew can have my first ODFOD in the plural.

It lifted everyone's spirits, joined us as a cul de sac, focused attention on our amazing NHS.

Biscuitto the haters.

Lollygaggles · 26/03/2020 20:32

We did it, clapped and shouted thank you. I can't give you masks and other PPE, I can't give you pay increases, but I can give you this. My heartfelt gratitude and appreciation. Thank you.

gerbo · 26/03/2020 20:33

Well said Lollygaggles.

majesticallyawkward · 26/03/2020 20:33

20:00 He's whooping and clapping like a loon.
20:30 so am I

It went on for half an hour?!

EnidButton · 26/03/2020 20:36

Oh god we'll be down as the miserable house now. DH is an nhs 'frontline' worker and had just got in so we were busy getting dinner and disinfecting his work things.

BonnesVacances · 26/03/2020 20:36

Most people in our cul de sac came out to clap, including the two families who've been ignoring the lockdown and have been coming and going all week. Hmm
