are you doing the round of applause for the NHS workers?

We had a note through our door about this (good way to spread germs....) asking us to join in with a hand clap for NHS workers. Apparently we are supposed to stand on our door step at a set time and do a round of applause for them. At least 4 of my close neighbours will be getting children to sleep so I won't be doing it but will you?

It was lovely 😊😊😊

Cheering, clapping, whistling here a still night could hear a lot of people, I choked up and got teary which surprised me.

Goawayquickly · 26/03/2020 20:08

I was quite surprised to hear a small ripple get louder with more and more people joining in (was getting washing in and could hear it over the back) it was quite moving and children were clapping from their bedroom windows.

Froq · 26/03/2020 20:08

@TroysMammy I think it was for the frontline NHS workers so no need to feel embarrassed.

Sux2buthen · 26/03/2020 20:08

I didn't think anyone around here would but seems everyone young and old did. It was pretty cool actually and did have a community feel for once. 👏🏻👏🏻

Raera · 26/03/2020 20:09

our whole street were out

cerealnapper · 26/03/2020 20:09

Oh, god. I didn't even realise this was a thing Until I saw this thread and heard EVERY HOUSE ON OUR ROAD clapping. Everyone is going to think I'm an asshole!

StirCrazed · 26/03/2020 20:09

Mortifyingly one of my children just took part in this. The shame.

SirChable · 26/03/2020 20:09

Quite a few here too. Lovely.

Enidcat5 · 26/03/2020 20:10

My neighbour was banging a pan!

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 20:11

In the UK, ‘virtue signalling’ I think it’s more likely for posters to post this on mn

I’m sure there were loads who did it which is nice

Good for them! Smile

flossyflorenceflounces · 26/03/2020 20:11

Our neighbours were banging pans too. Only one house wasn't out.

Together alone. It was lovely.

Gizmo79 · 26/03/2020 20:11

I have to say I changed my mind. It was really nice. I felt appreciated. I know that sounds weak and needy, but as a nurse going in each day, having the general public appreciate what we are going through meant a lot.
Thankyou to those who did, and those who didn’t- fair enough, I wasn’t going to join in either until I did!

Gizmo79 · 26/03/2020 20:12

P.S it was done at 8 pm as that is when shift changes for most areas....

Aragog · 26/03/2020 20:12

I was sceptical about it actually happening but I opened the windows at 8pm and there were so many people stood in their gardens, on doorsteps or at their window s clapping and cheering. Even some fireworks. All with social distancing but all out ready.

It was actually quite emotional to see everyone joining in with something at this time.

MIL says she phoned FIL at the time so he and the nurses could hear the clapping too. He's seriously ill in hospital with cancer and due to move to a hospice soon, but there's no visiting allowed. So lovely she could share the moment with him.

ilovecakeandwine · 26/03/2020 20:12

Yeah it's lovely that people come together at times like this 💙

YewandOak · 26/03/2020 20:13

Not a peep on my cul de sac.

Chaotica · 26/03/2020 20:13

A lot of people out around me - very loud clapping, fireworks, car horns. And not for TV either. It was a nice gesture especially given many people are stuck inside with no human contact all day.

Poshjock · 26/03/2020 20:13

Totally get the American references. YEARS ago I went to Sea World and while watching a show the announcer asked who used their Military ID to visit today and to stand up. Being completely naive to their ways, I stood. And got about about two minutes of applause and people around me patting my back and saying “thank you for service ma’am”. I was scarlet and praying for the ground to open up. I had no idea that was coming. It’s just not the British way.

Aragog · 26/03/2020 20:13

I was sceptical initially but actually I've changed my mind entirely. It was lovely. We have a lot of NHS staff living round here. And there all appeared to be on board as well as non medics.

DearTeddyRobinson · 26/03/2020 20:14

Jesus there are some right arseholes on this thread. Our entire road was out (London Zone 3), the only way we can show our appreciation for the life and death stuff these people are doing for us. My next door neighbour is frontline staff for one of the big hospitals. I'm glad she got to see how people feel.

Nearlyalmost50 · 26/03/2020 20:15

Yes we did it and it made me cry we are asking anyone to risk everything for all of us. Nothing virtue signalling about that genuine feeling and gratitude, I also sent thank you cards to those who helped my relative pass away peacefully recently, never hurts to thank people.

YgritteSnow · 26/03/2020 20:16

@Poshjock that exact same thing happened to me! I was in the army. At Seaworld in Florida. My kids made me stand up and everyone who stood up got flashed up onto huge screens round the place. I was on screen for ages and everyone was clapping and cheering me Blush. It did feel pretty good though.
